....well, only a fool would expect and ask for a touch-based display to operate like a notebook and support pointer-based hardware such as pen-tablets. the ipad is a touch-based OS and device, and is not designed to mirror functionality found in other OS & device models.

I'm sorry, but a drawing app on the iPad is what a lot of folks have been asking for. And not something to finger paint with. If you don't see the potential, that's your prerogative. The iPad will remain a sort of toy/media consumption device until it gains extensibility that lets it stand on its own a bit. Right now, it's stuck in 2nd place to a desktop/laptop and at least for me, it's not even worth its cost. My MBA does everything and is just as portable.

Well if you wanna get technical, Apple doesn't make the iPhone. Foxconn does.

foxconn is a contract manufacturer, hired by apple. thus its still "apple".. as far as im aware, the Nexus phone models are owned by their manufacturers and simply sold w/ the basic android OS. (may be wrong tho)

As more evidence of the supposed next gen iPad surfaces, my opinion that it looks as if Apple went nuts on beating it with the ugly stick grows.

Ah, I hate the feel of the iPod Touch 4. The form factor makes button use a little difficult compared to previous models. I hope the new iPad is not going this route.

incorrect. many artists have disproven your misconception about media consumption vs production:

....artists seem to be able to produce just fine. as do countless writers.

what proof do you offer to the contrary? be specific.

as for pen-based drawing tablets -- again, youre asking for pointer-based equipment on a touch-based platform. its like asking for a soup sandwich. or VR on a calculator. does not compute....different HUI models.

And even IF that doesn't happen, my SLR and my Point-and-Shoot use different cards (not to mention my iPhone, which as someone else said, can't hook up to an iPad yet). So even with the BEST CASE, a built-in slot only serves 1/3 of my cameras.

So, in short, built-in card readers are only barely useful to begin with and it's likely they'll go obsolete years before the rest of the computer does.
Ummm... I have no problem connecting my iPhone to my iPad using the camera kit. Sure it'll only download photos.

You know... does it really matter?

Soon, Balmer will be bouncing around the stage with the Windows 7 iPad Killer at CES and the game is over. :D

Why do people keep insisting that the iPad needs a rear facing camera. Front facing I can get on board with for Facetime and video calls, but a rear facing camera is stupid. I have a Galaxy Tab and that is awkward enough with only a 7" screen.

Give me some more RAM and a higher res screen and I will be more than satisfied. Maybe a dock similar to the one made by JBL for the Dell Inspiron Duo and it is practically a desktop replacement.

I don't think there is too many people insisting on the back facing camera. Right now it's all speculation and if the cases are correct, there seems to be a hole for one. I think if Apple adds it, they'll do it mostly just to keep up with the other tablets and the feature list. But, a back facing camera might have some nice applications in business too. So that might be the angle?

I would love to see a resolution bump, as I use the iPad mainly for digesting our heavy company PDF manuals. 180 dpi at least on a 9.7" screen without too much strain on the batteries should be doable, I guess. Go :apple:

Wow, this is just funny. Tablet input devices were designed to emulate the action of actually drawing on a piece of paper. Now, with the touch screen interface, it's one step closer and you want to go backwards. Shouting about "finger painting" won't change the fact that drawing directly on the screen (i.e. canvas) is far more intuitive that using something like a Wacom tablet. Now, if you were seriously wanting to see improvements from an artistic creation standpoint, you'd be asking Apple to open up their guidelines for touch detection. There have been several alternate touch detection methods developed that run on the iPad that accurately detect and ignore hand touches and can detect a fine point stylus. Now that's what the iPad needs to become a more effective creation tool. And that's what we should be asking Apple to allow.

Incidentally, I noticed that you completely ignored my comment informing you that the iPad does support USB keyboards through the camera connector kit. It seems to me that you are here simply looking for anyway to argue for the lack of value in something that you don't want, not to discuss and learn whether or not this is something that has value or what that value is. It seems an odd way to waste time....

All these leaks are probably careful mis-direction by Apple, after the iPhone 4 leaks. For a product that is likely not out until spring, I doubt they would be giving case manufacturers this much of a lead. Too much opportunity for leaks. But it is fun to watch everyone get spun up.

Yes, I would expect a micro-USB slot for the universal chargers at least and maybe some limited USB functionality as well - cameras, keyboards, POS gear, etc., but not hard drives, printers, scanners.

Got to keep your promises to Euro standards bodies.

Dock connector to microUSB cable in addition to the dock connector to USB cable. done.

Batteries are expensive. If the Dock connector is just a USB port, then why wouldn't I be able to just use a wired one ? How about a tablet for drawing ? Other peripherals ?

Let's face it, the iPad is not getting a USB port because Apple doesn't want the iPad to be a general purpose system like a Mac is. If you want to make a peripheral, you need to use the Dock connector and be part of the MFI program.

Yes, it costs 35$, it's the Camera kit. It has both a Dock connector adapter for USB and for SD Cards. Of course, the USB port is not much use outside of cameras.

Not true, whatsoever. I have actually attached a USB keyboard (Dell) to an iPad using the camera kit. It worked.

Well this fool prefers wired peripherals when working at a fixed desk and this fool carries around a laptop with an integrated keyboard rather than dragging around an iPad, a dock and a keyboard with an extra set of batteries..

Huh? You are saying that you have the perfect solution already (a laptop) and then gripe that the iPad isn't as good? Did you know the iPad also doesn't make toast? Apple don't want the iPad to to do everything that a laptop can because then no-one will buy their relatively expensive laptops.

Wireless keyboards last forever. Sorry but that's the dumbest argument in favour of a physical USB port on an iPad I've heard. There are only two main reasons why most people who have an iPad would like a USB port:
a) storage (somehow, not sure how this would work)
b) camera (which they can already do albeit with a clumsy and expensive add on)

The iPad is not a general storage device. You are never going to get access to the file system in the Apple iOS ecosystem. Forget it. So a) is out anyway. That leaves b), and I'm sure one day, if not in the iPad 2, you will get an SD slot.
