I've been thinking about the online delay situation, versus loads in the store and given the limited stock if I was apple I'd have done exactly the same. Here's why:
- Say your Apple and you have 400,000 ipads to sell in the UK, you know there's going to be high demand and you want to maximise your sales so you can say "Look how many we sold on opening weekend!!". You could:
A) Sell 200,000 online and 200,000 in the shops; selling all your 400,000 on the opening weekend. OR
B) Sell all 400,000 in the shops and ANOTHER 300-400,000 online because of high demand which you then fill the orders directly from your chinese factory as quick as they can be made (i.e. 2-3 weeks).
So you either sell 400,000 and annoy the very visible hoards of queuers being interviewed by the media due to the short suppy OR
Sell 700-800,000 (on paper anyway) and annoy the online orderers sat at home and complaining on a few online forums.
I know which option I would take....
I did in the end manage to get myself an iPad 2! So I thought I'd share my story below too 🙂
I started trying to order online at 12:30am on Friday morning only to be caught up in the whole 'oops there's a problem' debacle. Finally managed to get my order in for a 64gb 3G with navy leather smart cover and HD cable at about 1:50am. I am fairly annoyed with the 2-3week wait, so I thought I'd see what else I could do. I work in central London so I headed down to the Regent St store on Friday at 5:30pm and there was literally over 1000 people there, and although it looked like they had enough stock for everyone, I had plans and couldn't queue for the next 4 hours to get one.
I read on this thread that when the store finally closed on Friday they still had 'plenty' in stock, so I decided I'd go on Saturday and see if they had anyone. I got there at 08:30am for a 09:00am open thinking not many would have thought to come again on Saturday, WRONG 🙂 There were already 150-200 people there and so I joined the back of the queue, another 100-150 joined behind me in the next 30mins. When I got to within metres of the front door, a couple of apple store guys started walking down the line saying "No more 3G, WiFI only". I half though about leaving as I'd wanted the 3G, but the more I thought about it, I've only really used the 3G a few limited times and mainly use wifi, so in the end decided I'd save myself £15 a month (vodafone) and get the wifi version. I got 64Gb wifi blue navy smart cover, took around 1 hour in all. Still huge queues when I left about 10:15am and the supply looked liked it was reducing quickly. Think they then ran out mid afternoon. My online order is now going to my brother.
Hope everyone gets lucky and gets one soon. I really like it so far!!
Richard.
