Am i the only one who thinks the ipad looks really really UGLY?! Its that aluminum unibody look, but its got tons of little holes for the camera, speakers, etc. It looks really cut up and un-appleish. Part of it i think is because the buttons and stuff are bigger due to the curved edge, just looks gross! Just my 2 cents

Nope, you are not the only one who thinks the iPad 2 design has gone backwards in time. Yes, it is UGLY.
They should have just taken the current iPad and make it thinner with retina display plus a camera that does not look like a hole (maybe make it squarish).

You can't win them all. Though this opens up a lot of 17" notebook options for me.
There are also some very nice 16in options that will surprise you, specially on price to spec ratio and build quality. But yeah, it sad to see the MBP line stagnating a little because they are too focused on IOS devices.

Knowing that the iPad can be thicker than iPhone, and it is. I believe it can house a bigger and better camera sensor.
I considered an iPod Touch but it was too small.

I'm deciding between a Lenovo Y570 with the GT 555M when they roll out in May or some other notebook with nVidia Optimus. Mobile GPU options haven't really changed much since the HD 5000/400 introduction.

And the camera sucks for taking a pic.
The sacrifices made for the price point and margins were another turn off. I was close to buying one but Anandtech had a detailed review. It was tempting at $259 for the 32 GB model during Amazon's Christmas sale though.

I have read so many times that a back facing camera on ipad is a waste. Every time there is an ipad rumor, tons of people post that a back facing camera on ipad is stupid.

I disagree unconditionally, a back facing camera on ipad would be sooo Awesome! Yes you'll have to use two hands but, the screen on ipad would allow you film what you want much more easily. It will be

With higher-end cameras the buffer is quite fast. The buffer fills up because the camera can't dump its contents to the memory card fast enough. You can prove this to yourself easily enough if you have access to such a camera - I've played around with different memory card speeds in my D700, for example.

This is the issue at hand, is it the card being the limiting factor or is it the camera subsystem that needs to process it and move it around in the camera.

I've tried several card speeds in my Canon 5D mark II, and have yet to extend it's maximum burst of 13 shots using Raw. The makers specify a maxium burst, i dont know about nikon but Canon does. The only time I see a difference is when I use non UDMA cards.

The question is - does burst number go up as card write speed goes up. From my own testing, yes it does up to a point until the camera becomes a limiting factor.

Im also thinking a complete redesign meaning internals, leaving more room for the battery. I can't imagine why Apple will do a complete redesign of the exterior, as I think the current front/back glass with side antenna is a really nice design, something that SJ was bragging about. Unless Apple feels there is so much competition out there that 2011 is the year they're gonna try to bury the competition, for both the iPhone and iPad. In this case, it will be full of win for us. So far the only sure thing that I can think of for the iPhone 5 is NFC. A dual core processor would be nice, but I'm having no problems whatsoever with speed on the 4. Better graphics processor would also be nice as it will up the gaming experience to another level.

Another possibility is that the totally redesigned "iPhone 5" is not for 2011. This year's model could just be a minor revision (ie. 4.x).

There's plenty of precedent of Apple releasing minor upgrades rather than the overhauls that fanboys/trolls claim they "have" to release, or are a "forced" to by competition. I'm especially thinking about the Macs here. But similar claims were made with earlier iPods.

I agree, that mockup looks horrid. iPad1 design ***** all over that iPad2 mockup. I am sure iPad2 official won't look anything like this mediocre mockup

Sure, it looks like someone just ripped the screen off my 3 year old MacBook Pro and called it an iPad. But maybe we should give credit to Apple for going with function over aesthetics here — starting with a flat back so it's stable when used on a flat surface. Apple are often accused of doing the opposite, like those sharp edges on unibody MacBook Pros, or the glass back on the iPhone 4. Which would you prefer? Cutting edge (sometimes literally) aesthetics, or practical and usable?

As another member mentioned, they stated that they had spent over a year redesigning for the transition to the iPhone 4. If that exterior design lasted only one generation, I'd be extremely surprised.

Who cares how long it took them? IMO the iPhone 4 hardware will go down in history as one of Apple's mistakes. Sure, it's selling by the millions, but could sales have been even better had the design been superior? (I'm referring mainly to the fragile glass back and antenna issue.)

Steve brags about all of the designs... If it was made of poop, he would be bragging about how it is safe and environmentally friendly it is, or something like that.

I would bet money the iPad will not have an SD card slot. I am 50/50 on the higher resolution screen. I just have a problem seeing them not make the resolution double what it is... (not saying I don't want it to happen)

The iPad will have two cameras.... Anyone who says otherwise is crazy... It's not like it cost Apple all that much to add in a back facing camera (and if they sell even 2% more iPads because of the camera, it will easily pay for the addition)... and I have not heard anyone say this yet, but I think a 9.7" view-finder for a camera would be epic!!! (a little weird looking though...)

Really? It's perfect! What's ironic is the antenna gate thing is nothing. Yes the signal dips a little but in the uk it doesn't cause problems on Vodafone for me as my phone hands over to 2g mid call. If the "signal problem" isn't around on your verizon phone it will be because it's been "redesigned" it's bollocks.

You got that right. If here was a technical reason that caused the 256MB machine to happen they should have corrected it at the six month interval. When iPad 2 does come there will be a rapid migration of software so that it only works on the new machines with their extra RAM. People will wonder what happened and why their machine became obsolete so fast.

I hope not. But your comment got me thinking… There's an awful lot of first gen iPads out there now, and if developers are smart they'll want to keep supporting them for the foreseeable future. That can't be a bad thing, encouraging apps with low-RAM requirements. So there's your blessing in disguise for Apple's choice to go with only 256MB. It keeps the app landscape lean and mean! I mean, my Commodore 64 still rocks, and it has 64K or RAM!!

The antenna issue is NOT nothing. AnandTech and others have done thorough tests which show that the signal suffers beyond normal attenuation experienced by other phones, due to conductivity between the external antennas. Yes, the phone is still pretty capable — nonetheless it has design flaws. The glass back is another. It's a phone for goodness sakes, something that inevitably takes a bit of a knock from time to time when you're carrying it around with you all day. The choice to double the amount of glass had everything to do with the 'cool' factor, and nothing to do with the practicalities of real-world use.

The iPhone 4 is still a great computer. I'm just hoping the iPhone 5 will be a great 'phone' too.

Iphone 5

I'm excited to be buying the Verizon iphone in Feb. Been waiting a long time. I'm pretty disspointed that the phone wont be dual CDMA / LTE so that we could take advantage of 4g wherever its rolled out, but those are the breaks.
I'm bumming tho, that so far it doesnt look like white will be available.

I also think there is No way, No how that the iphone5 in June will be a Verizon capable phone. They cant...its only 4+ months after the initial release. People would be furious if they sign a 2 year deal with Verizon in Feb, and have to shell out 600$ in June for a new iphone. That scenario I really do not see. What makes alot more sense is a new, redesigned LTE/CDMA dual core Verizon phone in Feb 2012. And available in White. That, people will be ok with since after a year, you're eligble for the upgrade price. At least thats my take on it.

Still, with all this, I'm THRILLED to be getting the Verizon iphone in Feb.

You use an iPad differently than I do...

I was disappointed with the low resolution of my current iPad when I took delivery. It's great for apps, games and movies - but for document viewing, the resolution is just too low to support full page A4/legal scans. Doubling the resolution would make a whole load of difference here - and really enhance the platform for document reading.

I think the retina display will appear across Apple's portable lineup this year (MacBook Pros included).

Well they have already started doing this by offering higher resolution options, and the new airs both have high res displays. To see something of retina resolution seems unlikely (and unnecessary) though.

Apple has to get its act together with resolution independence if Mac displays get any higher in resolution. UI elements can't keep getting smaller indefinitely!

They started talking-up resolution independence a loooong time ago. I wonder what happened to all of that.

iPad for sure needs a resolution update! I had one for 2 weeks and took it back because the pixels were too big. I knew that resolution wouldn't last more than 1 generation.
Completely agree. It's like looking at a first-generation NES video game. lol

The bit in bold is pretty interesting...

Sounds like the next iPhone will actually be a a significant upgrade rather than a 3gs type upgrade.

Thoughts?

im tired of iphones being so damn small so i plan to hold on to my iphone 4 (got it 2 weeks ago) for a very long time until they made some radial changes specifically a larger screen (at least 4 inches) and stereo sound output ..

adding more Mhzs and more ram and storage is not good enough for me.. BIGGER SCREEN OR BUST

no

i dont think new iphone is going to be redizined i think the iphone thats gonna come out in summer is going to be the same iphone 4 but with white too

I have a new i7 17" MBP with a high-res screen. I, for one, would welcome an even higher resolution screen. It's still nowhere close to continuous tone and you can see the subpixel text rendering. No reason for that these days. It's 2011. ;)
