An SD card is not the universal memory card format for digital cameras, certainly not my Nikon D700, just for little point and shoots... so why incorporate a SD card slot?

I would rather it had a USB port, the way that I download photos from my camera, I never take in and take out my memory card... why the hell do that when all you have to do is simply plug in the USB?! I guess so people don't have to carry around the USB cord, and all one would have to do is unload and insert the camera's SD card... but then goes back, to not all cameras use SD cards.

My new 13" MacBook Air has the SD card slot, an absolute waste of space that could have been better used for something else, or nothing at all in it's place.

I would love for the new iPad to have a USB slot, mostly so I could insert my USB modem when WiFi isn't available :)

Same boat - Canon 5D mark II.

SD is a consumer formart, the iPad is a consumer device.

With that said, SD is just not for point and shoots. The Nikon D300s, Nikon D7000, and Canon 1D mk IV all use the format.

The two downsides to the USB port method is camera power and camera availability. You are eating camera power by having it connected to the iPad, meaning less pictures. Also, by connecting the camera, you are taking its use away. If you have multiple cards, its pretty easy to have one in the iPad doing a transfer while the other is in the camera taking pictures.

because the people on ATT KNOW they are getting a refresh come June like they do every year, Verizon customers do not know if the June refresh will reflect Verizon customers or not

Still don't see how this means they are being "dicked" over. Products have cycles and sometimes that means we buy a product at the end of it's cycle. It's life.

SD cards are still useless for professional or enthusiast photographers most dslr's use CF cards for a good reason sd just isn't fast enough yet. My camera fills the buffer after three seconds of continuous burst because a 90MB/s UDMA CF card can't keep up.

i don't think the ipad is targeting professional photographers, thats what the MAC is for

I believe that looks like a USB port on the dock for iPad 2.
Does this picture mean that you'll be able to hook up USB device to the dock and utilize it with iPad 2?

That maybe so, but pro cameras like the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, Leica S2, and other give you the option of CF and SD, because they know that where the market is most likely heading.

No, it stops after three seconds because the internal buffer in the camera fills up. This has very little to do with the card write speed.

Glad that Steve held his ground on the antenna issues. About the only thing he didn't do was name a few bloggers and say "**** you!" Interesting how the bitching stopped around the press conference.
Most people know the futility of dealing with a Dictator.

I would welcome a redesign. They HAVE to fix the antennae issue. It's been the biggest negative of the 4, by far.

That's actually been a non-issue for me... What has EASILY been the biggest issue of the 4 for me is that darn proximity sensor.. I'm STILL having troubles with that after 3 phones and every software update issued.. I gave up and just accepted it after the last one I got showed some improvement...It's not perfect, but I don't have time to keep exchanging these things hoping to find one that works perfectly- it's much easier FOR ME (key phrase- no need to lecture me about accepting less than perfection, etc etc) to just make this one work...

Although the whole attenaegate issue has been relatively sorted - I think the minute it got blown out of proportion Jobs would have ordered a redesign to some extent - its just not good PR when they focus on the design aspect of it for it to be exactly the same when they've had an opportunity to get rid of it once and for all.

So why with slower cards is it down to 1 second???
please bear in mind I take pictures for a living.

Well, it's really a little of both.

Your camera's internal buffer is filling up quickly, which means it's having to offload to the card sooner. That said, the newest SD cards are plenty fast enough for most use. My DSLR can shoot 23/24 frames of continuous burst before it has to stop and wait for the SD card to catch up.

To what antenna issue are you referring to? the iphone 4 drops less calls than all other iphones, and probably other smart phones too idk.

I never said SD was as fast, its not. However, the reason you are ending after 3 seconds using a 90 MB/s card is likely because the CAMERA cannot keep up pushing data to the card, not the other way around. If that is you card speed, the CAMERA and its buffer is the weakest link.

This is why manufacturers advertise a maximum burst number, because the data path between the camera internal buffer to the card is the limiting factor. The burst number is not something that scales up indefinitely with card speed. Sure, it will increase when moving from a non-UDMA card to one with 90 MB/Sec, but once you are in the rarified area of a 90 MB/s card, the CAMERA getting the data from from the buffer is the issue.

This is why manufactures (e.g Nikon) will add extra buffer memory for an extra charge (a massive charge actually).

Look it up in your manual. What camera do you have? I'll do it for you if you like.

Well said. That is the main tenet of Apple's strength in their product designs.

I think the iPhone4 is a good balance between performance and style but as you said, the screen could be a little bigger. I've been tempted to upgrade many a times but it looks like the next one will be it.

If Gizmodo were to report this rumor, I'd believe it 100%.

I don't doubt Apple has something new up it's sleeve since there are increasing competition from android and w7p. Dual core or not, who gives a crap when none of the software uses it. What a waste if it's in there just for being dual core.

I've learned from my PC days to chill off on specs. What's more important to me these days are devices that let me do what I want and quickly without much effort. I don't want to tinker with battery, tinker with video quality, etc. Just give me what I need it'll be great.

You can tweak every bit of performance from your smart phone but if that makes you happy then great - for me I don't have time to waste on nonsense. that's why Apple iPhone 4 is the winner.

All I want in the next generation phone is for a bit larger screen - it would be sweet even for a 3.7" because it makes a subtle difference. Even 4.0" would be sweet. Anything bigger is too big.

Keep the home screen the same layout is perfectly fine actually. It works fab and no need for those changes. Do change the stupid notification system - the pop up dialog boxes are really not intuitive for messaging. That area really does need to be improved. (bitesms can help but that's JB). And for the lock screen, complete info (such as personalized weather, news clips, calendar, etc) - because it's a waste of space for just a slide to unlock feature and the clock is there to waste space.

I could care less for dual core - as long as it's just as smooth as the iPhone 4, I have no complaints. Oh, last but not least the major thing I wish for the iPhone 5 to do is render web pages as fast as my desktop. The performance even on the iPad 1 isn't as fast as I'd like - if they can make the browser load and render web pages like my desktop, that will be the cream :p

As was pointed out by a couple previous responders, it makes sense for a consumer device to go with an SD card slot. Not so much for a so-called "Pro" laptop... but I digress.

I don't think Apple will put any sort of memory slot in the next iPad. It just doesn't seem to fit with their design aesthetic; plus it's another potential point of failure - an SD card sticking out can get whacked or caught on something. I'm not saying I think this way; just that I'll be surprised if Apple does it. They're surprisingly fussy about certain things, even when there is an obvious segment of the market that wants a feature (such as a smaller tablet).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Well in those cases your going to need to find the cable anyway. So having a dongle that connects USB to the dock and generally only supports pictbridge USB isn't such a drama. Plus pictbridge cover almost every other situation. Put a normal USB port and it would be expected to work with every USB device including the vacuum cleaner.
Sd card on the other hand is a pretty easy target for full support.

Ugly

Am i the only one who thinks the ipad looks really really UGLY?! Its that aluminum unibody look, but its got tons of little holes for the camera, speakers, etc. It looks really cut up and un-appleish. Part of it i think is because the buttons and stuff are bigger due to the curved edge, just looks gross! Just my 2 cents

Really, it's only a minority of nerd porn addicted fellows who think like that. I had my SE phone for like 3 years before getting my 3GS. Consumerism pushes us to buy new stuff, not actual need. These people should feel like morons for buying into the hype and "next best thing" propaganda instead of feeling like morons for buying something earlier than the new release cycle.

But there's no reasoning with the tech spec crowd, their stuff obviously shuts down and stops working the minute a new gadget hits the market.

This. Is very true. I'm sure everyone who posts to this forum can actually use their iPhone for at least 3 years before upgrading, given that no accidents like dropping it happened.

If you think about it, it's a very high-tech nifty device, it blows 90% of other mobile phones in the market, even after 3 years. (Some nokia & blackberry phones are still inferior to the original iPhone, think about it. iPhones are a very high end phone.)

No, it stops after three seconds because the internal buffer in the camera fills up. This has very little to do with the card write speed.

With higher-end cameras the buffer is quite fast. The buffer fills up because the camera can't dump its contents to the memory card fast enough. You can prove this to yourself easily enough if you have access to such a camera - I've played around with different memory card speeds in my D700, for example.

I'm pretty stoked about the iPhone 5. Not sure if there will be a total redesign but I'll take whatever comes out.
