What's more important is... how much does this guy weigh?

That's my question as well. It's clear that for apple to make the technical improvements they wanted (Retina Display, bigger battery, 4G(?)) they had to take the hit somewhere, and it seems clear that thickness was it.

The question is will weight also be the same, marginally more, OR will they have managed to shave weight despite the thickness increase? I personally would be happier with lighter than thinner, and iFixit has already stated in their video assessment that the "iPad3" display weighs .6 ounces LESS than it's iPad2 counterpart. So we know at least one component has lost some bulk.

If this component has dropped even half an ounce, then we could see the overall weight drop from 1.3 pounds to maybe 1.2. And as Steve said last year, at that weight every ounce counts.

Even if everything stayed pretty much the same, I think the technical improvements more than compensate for a device of the same thickness and weight. The iPad4 is likely where we'll see another big physical change, where we could see both weight and thickness drop significantly.

Unacceptable.

Steve would have NEVER allowed this. He doesn't believe in making products thicker, only thinner.

/sarcasm. :)

Now, come on Apple, announce it next week and make it available the week of March 12-16. :p

Well Steve at least would have b*tched and complained about it. But its virtually the same size. And as far as cases? If yours doesn't less than a MM of give to it, your probably can't get it out in the first place. Weight should be interesting... But yes, announce the media event so I can take my money and give it to you the week of the 12th.

I never got an iPad 2, but I'm guessing my iPad case doesn't fit it?

I guess some looser cases might have enough wiggle room in regards to iPad 2 cases, but those that are tighter fitted probably won't work with iPad 3. iPad cases may fit the iPad 3 though with the curved back it may not. Oh well more money for third partys :)

so did you not read the article? because it links to a website that posted the photos first... and the photos weren't taken by MacRumors.

i'm just saying that it's neat to get this kind of information. i rather have this than nothing :)

I guess this is quite an embarrassment for Apple.

They are obviously trying to minimize the shock of releasing a fat iPad by leaking the parts in the run-up to the release so that the media is already tired of talking about it and rather focused on all the awesome new features.

I've seen more leaked parts for the iPad 3 than any other i-device in recent history... Apple went nuts when someone got a hold of an iPhone 4 but they seem pretty cool with letting it be known that the iPad 3 is coming and its gonna be a little chunky.

errm, unless the extra space inside was filled with air or cavorite, it would have be to heavier wouldn't it? :)

Not really. They'd have to cut weight elsewhere. Someone mentioned above that iFixIt weighed the "alleged" screen for the iPad 3 and it was half an ounce or so lighter than the iPad 2 screen. They would have to do some more component weight shedding to keep the weight down. I hope it's a little lighter than the iPad 2.

That is actually not an accurate way to use that tool -at all- It's obvious they're relying on the jaw at the throat which is actually wider than the leading 1 inch of it.

With the back shell essentially being like a saucer dish, and slight angle because the outer jaw on the caliper is essentially floating in mid-air, could account for the variance in thickness.

We'll know what it is when it ships.

At least it's not the classic sneaked photo in an elevator.

The thickness was often the reason cited the most for the crappy inbuilt camera, and not using the same one as the iPhone.

I wouldn't be so bothered about the thickness. The weight would be more of an issue IMO. It'd be interesting to see how much heavier the iPad 3 will be vs the iPad 2.

This is probably the only thing we still don't know about the iPad 3 and probably one of the most important. The iPad 2 was just about light enough, I hope Apple keep it as light as possible.

Taking a few tips from politicians and other naysayers:

Who has proof that the calipers were properly cali"p"rated before measuring?

Now, I'm pulling from memory, but wasn't there something recently about Gorilla Glass 2 being equally strong @ .8mm thinner than 'normal' Gorilla Glass? That would be a heck of a coincidence now, wouldn't it?

Same over-all thickness, with the thinner (but equal strength) glass allowing more room for the internals?
