Now, I'm pulling from memory, but wasn't there something recently about Gorilla Glass 2 being equally strong @ .8mm thinner than 'normal' Gorilla Glass? That would be a heck of a coincidence now, wouldn't it?

Same over-all thickness, with the thinner (but equal strength) glass allowing more room for the internals?

I was thinking this but doesnt the face and glass rest inside the thicker shell? The glass will be a factor. I can see this getting to within 0.5mm of the iPad 2 though

Not sure. The only one I've had an opportunity to play with was an iPad 1, so I'm not sure about how the iPad 2 is put together. It just seems like a pretty big coincidence if the thickness differences I'm remembering are right. (I haven't been able to find the reference I'm remembering though, so I might just be getting two other bits of info mixed together incorrectly.)

I don't even recall a laptop that was 10cm thin. But hey, maybe I'm just showing my age with that...

This is going to come down to weight/heft which is one of the key things I hate about my iPad 1. The ipad 2 is still too heavy (IMHO) and it looks like the 3 is heavier.

If I can fit my iPad 3 in my iPad 2 case I'll be very happy. I hate flushing $ down the toilet on accessories and also ilke my iPad 2 case.

Steve would have never let this happen

Well Steve at least would have b*tched and complained about it. But its virtually the same size. And as far as cases? If yours doesn't less than a MM of give to it, your probably can't get it out in the first place. Weight should be interesting... But yes, announce the media event so I can take my money and give it to you the week of the 12th.
yes, because they just designed the iPad 3 last week. Steve had no idea what they were planning on doing with it, and he had no say in the device's development...

Seriously people.... stop saying steve would not have allowed the iPhone 4S, he wouldn't have let the iPad get thicker, etc. You live under a rock if you think steve was not involved with the development of Apple products and services for the foreseeable future.

I don't think that it will be any thicker. You are all forgetting that you are only measuring the back shell! With the iPad 2 the screen sits slightly raised from the back shell. What if the new screen is thinner, using different glass? maybe resulting in iPad 3 being the same thickness as the iPad 2

Fabric has extra wiggle room. Also, I don't have my cases any more.
so i'm still curious.... if it was a question that can be answered with common sense and no need for an iPad 3, why are you asking us? Do you not have enough common sense to answer it yourself?

you mean other than a smart douche?

Steve was a complex man yet a funny one :)

Outrageous!

Big, fat, piece of crap.

Imagine trying to sell us a chubby tablet.

Raise a cry to the heavens...this shall not be!!!

The nerve...

  :D

Lol i see tablets that are from 10mm to 13mm. My dad has the Asus transformer and its pretty close to 13mm so... 9.5mm is pretty nice for me :D

main thing is weight, i hope iPad 3 has lost 100 grams. :D

iPad 2 Lost around 91 grams... so don't expect nothing more than 50 grams :D although i wish it could happen ;)

"This POS will never sell! I am never going to buy one." Hmmmm, I remember all the postings for the iPad1. So remind me how many of these unsellable iPads have been sold? lol

iPad name changed to iBrick

The photo's show the iPad 3 to be 95mm thick, that's about 3.75 inches. I think we may not be able house our old iPad 2 cases :D

yes.... I am still on my rev 1 iPad, and I was thinking about upgrading to iPad 3 but I don't think I'll be interested now. I wonder how much of it is battery... maybe with it being almost 4 inches thick it will have a battery life of weeks instead of hours.
