You do know that the iPad 2S is what is being released in March sans Retina Display. And Apple will never add an SD card slot or mini hdmi ports and that sort of crap.

Apple will not release 2 iPads per year. Please review Apple's 10 year history of releasing iDevices.

The only way it'll be lighter is if they switch to plastic (back & screen), which I'm not opposed to. It would be super portable, and cheaper. The smart cover could still work with embedded magnets like the poly MacBooks.

That is not the only way they could make it lighter. There is a rumor that the iPad 3 will use an improved battery technology which is thinner and lighter than the current one while storing a similar amount of power. Also the in-cell touchscreen I mentioned in an earlier post would additionally shave off a few ounces, as it removes a layer of glass.

There is a point where it can get too thin. I'd rather have them use the newer battery tech in the same form factor for a longer charge instead of thinner case.

For me, I want:

A6 Quad-Core (Super-fast but super-efficient)
At least 1GB ram
Siri
At least 12 hour battery
WiFi+3G (4G?)
8mp camera (back)
Same form-factor
Retina Display
Better graphics (not that the iPad 2's are bad)
Included HEADPHONES

That is all :)

Let me guess, you want it cheaper than $499 too?

But they could easily add 2 more cores (ARM Cortex-A9 based) and clock the SGX543MP2 at 500 Mhz. That would easily make it twice as fast as the iPad 2 and get better battery-life on 28 nm.

For a 2048 x 1536 pixel display you probably need something like the ARM Cortex-A15 (dual-core) and ImgTeg Series 6 (Rogue) GPU. Although that combo is optimistic for a 2012 timeframe. Heck, an A6 featuring quad core ARM Cortex-A9 and the SGX543MP2 clocked at 500 Mhz, would make it match the yet unreleased Playstation Vita.

I could see the cameras getting better but the advancement will probably be going from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS (or if we are lucky, 3GS to iPhone 4).

My practical, maybe dilussional to Apple wish list

1. one 4G radio that'll work on all carriers
2. Faster processor, even if it means giving up Retina
3. upgraded cameras to same as iP4s, or at least iP4. Purely logical move...since it would save Apple some money from economies of scale.
4. upgrade to 32/64/128GB while staying at current price points

My pie in the sky, maybe smokin crack to Apple wish list
all of the above plus
1. MS office, the real deal
2. thunderbolt or at least Micro SD slot
4. retina display
5. iOS-6 where there is a central, shared file system

Rumors..

Well, according to Some rumors, there might be a 7 inch iPad, retina display in either 9 inch or 7 inch iPad. And they're testing lte on the iPad. Just search up keywords and you'll find them at either cult of Mac or any rumor website, maybe.

Some here are talking about an iPad 2S but I believe, as an iPad 1 owner, that such an iPad 2S would be a real disappointment. The iPad 2 is already an small ugrade and it could have just as well been called the iPad 1S.

This is what I expect from Apple's iPad 3:
- Retina display
- A6 dual core, but smaller and more energy efficient (perhaps even quad core, but that is a small chance)
- More graphical power
- LTE support (smaller chance, but I think it's very well possible)
- Better cameras
- At least some small changes in design, maybe even a complete redesign
- GLONASS and bluetooth 4.0

Now I'm going to explain why expect the above features.

Retina display
People have been talking about a retina display for the iPad 2 ever since the launch of the iPhone 4. Rumour is going that the retina display for iPad 2 was cancelled last-minutes due to small production and quality issues. Apple now has had the time to work on an iPad with retina display since the iPhone 4: march 2012 (expected iPad 3 launch) is almost two full years after the iPhone 4's retina display. There's a hype and people are expecting this.

A6 dual core
I think there's a very small chance it will be a quad core processor. I think it will just be smaller and thus more energy efficient. Perhaps it will be higher clocked (so instead of 1 GHz dual core, it might be 1.5 GHz dual core). I don't expect a big change in the processor.

More graphical power
A retina display means that the device needs more graphical power. It would also be a logical decision, because ever since the iPhone 3G all following iOS devices had some sort of upgrade in graphical performance.

LTE support
The iPad is of course a much bigger device than the iPhone 4S. I think Apple will use the iPad to try out the new LTE chips and if it's satisfactory it will be used in the 6th generation iPhone.

Redesign OR small changes in design
I'm not really sure on this one. They might keep the same design, but I do believe there will be at least some smaller changes (like replacing the speaker because now it's pointing backwards).

Better cameras
Last but not least, the iPad 3 will have better cameras. FaceTime HD is needed for the bigger screen, and photos will just look pixelated on a retina display if they don't add a better camera. My guess: 2 MP front camera, 5 MP back. No flash.

GLONASS support and bluetooth 4.0
It seems like Russia really wants devices to support GLONASS. Apple started supporting GLONASS with the iPhone 4S and I think they will continue this trend. Apple also uses bluetooth 4.0 in a variety of devices.

--------------------------------------------------------------
So these are my guesses. Retina display is the most important of all.

Now, what I would like to see (but from which I think is unlikely), is the following:

- Bigger storage
--> $499 -> 32 GB
--> $599 -> 64 GB
--> $699 -> 128 GB
- A 16 GB iPad 2 as low budget model -> $399.
- GPS (and GLONASS) standard in WiFi model, not only in the 3G (or perhaps 4G) model
- Much better and somewhat louder speakers
- 1 GB RAM
- Siri (seems unlikely to me, because Apple has never added Voice Control before on their tablet devices)
- Better battery (will probably just stay the same)

(...)
That package would not alienate 2011 iPad2 buyers, but bring the currently biggest iOS selling point into the economically most important quarter of the year: Siri !

(...)
An iPad 2S would not be enough. The iPad 2 already was a very small upgrade from the iPad 1 and an iPad 2S would not persuade me, as an iPad 1 owner, to upgrade (unless it's got a retina display, but than it wouldn't be a S upgrade).

Siri is not a good selling point either. Siri is only available in very few languages and thus has no functionallity in 80% of all the countries where the iPad will be sold. Apple needs to come with something other than Siri. Siri is a gimmick, that's all.

Besides that, Apple has never supported Voice Control before (which has been available since the iPhone 3GS).

1. I expect some form of retina display. Not as good as iPhone though
2. A6
3. EDIT: 768gb ram
4. Same design
5. Siri
6. HD front cam
7. 3mp rear cam
8. Even better graphics(this will be every year)
9. Bluetooth 4.0
10. 1080p recording

Do you reckon apple will keep to their february/march announcement release cycle?

Would seem things are pointing towards that. Just because the rumor mill has kicked up today does not mean we will be seeing it in the immediate future. My moneynis on a march release.
Which is bad for me because I will be getting the ps vita the month before, and the new iMac whenever that comes out. Gonna be poor.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

My wishlist:

Retina Display - Self-explanatory really, it would be incredible.

Improved camera optics - Seems like natural progression.

A6 Processor - Quad-core would be nice, but seems a bit difficult, maybe just efficiency & clock speed improvements for the A5.

Improved graphics - Again, natural progression.

Lighter - If possible, thinner seems unlikely, slightly thicker is probably necessary to accommodate the new LCD.

Stronger glass - Just for safety.

Improved battery - If possible, current battery life is great though.

Updated iOS - With some new features

32GB SDD as standard - Probably won't happen, would be nice though.

Maybe a surprise or two - NFC, LTE for example

The big question for me is, will iPad 3 see Siri?
Apple's statement Re: Siri on iPhone 4 said "We won't bring Siri to old devices" leaves the door open for Siri on iPad 3

Going a different direction completely

I like some of the wishlists here. I personally would like a retina LED display as that would make lining up shots on Virtual Pool HD much easier (no vested interests; just by far the best pool game on iPad) which is the only game I play and for many hours every week now for over a year (it's that good).

But here is what I wish Apple would really do:

Continue the progress for us graced with the cash to buy a new iPad, but simultaneously go in the exact opposite direction and create an iPad without any gee-whiz features, in fact, dumb down the iPad 1 design even removing features if need be to get the cost down to the $199 range. Offer that iPad to schools and to students K-12. Make a deal with all of the major text book manufacturers similar to the one they made with the big 5 music companies to use iPad as a platform for delivery. Subsidize all or part of the cost for students who can not afford $199 for an iPad. Lock it down with passwords so that stealing them would be meaningless. Also lock it down by putting all of the students' iPads under one account for the school district so that all iPads would have the same basic app structure, but allow individuals to add certain educational apps a la carte on request.

This would accomplish a number of things, including Steve Jobs' desire to become a force for revolutionizing the US educational system. It would create a cottage industry for educational apps and new ways to produce learning media that were advanced beyond the printed page.

It could be done even at a monetary loss for Apple (but likely would not need to be) and still create huge cachet for the Apple brand even beyond the huge cachet it already has, which would be an indirect secondary profit center and power center for Apple. And its the right thing to do.

I'd say a solid YES to everything on your list except the 8MP camera.

Just a quick reality check on your "logic." Apple will sell upwards of 40 million iPads and 75 million iPhones in the coming year. Do you think they're really going to get any further volume discount on any components above and beyond where they are now by consolidating any one component?

How about matte black aluminum for the back?

Also, white backs for its respective color as well … though it will probably be better in gloss white to keep it clean.

I think we'll see colored metal Apple products when they start using the Liquidmetal material they've licensed. Apparently you can color the Liquidmetal all the way through, so scratches won't show so much.

iPad 3 = Siri, updated camera and useless retina display

Hard to improve upon iPad 2.
Lots of talk about higher res displays (i.e. retina display for iPad).
I am not sure how useful this really is. The display is fantastic already. Will we really notice an even higher res display in day-to-day use?

It seems that they HAVE to update something, but there is not much that they can update.

So I suspect they will use Siri as the main reason to get iPad 3, just as with iPhone 4S. Siri CAN run easily on earlier generation devices, but Apple is using it as the chief reason to upgrade.

Oh yeah, and an improved camera.

Camera, Display and Siri- the only updates to iPad 3.

(Personally, I'd get a refurb'd iPad 2 as soon as 3 is released).

I agree on the camera. They def should be uograded to at least the spec of the iphone. I use the external cam a lot.

Gotta agree with both Piggle and VPrime.
However, one thing I would like to see improved on iPad 3 is: 3/5MP Camera (the one that's being used on iPhone, perhaps?)
Although people wouldn't use camera that much on the iPad, it would be a nice upgrade since it has the same camera as iPod Touch 4 does, and I would hate to upgrade to iPad 3 without any improvement on the camera.

The iPad 3 won't be that amazing if all it gets is what we've expected...

Faster processor? How much is that gonna help at this point? I know you could say this for anything, but with iOS apps, I think you hit a point where the factors behind loading times are beyond our control. (e.g. Animations, data speed, ect.)
1GB RAM? For what? We don't have true multitasking.
Retina display? That'll definitely be slightly more appealing, but on a screen so big, it's not very important. The 3GS to iP4 was big because on such a small display, the blurryness was really noticeable. But with the iPad, we're looking at something 4x+ as big. It won't have the same effect.

We're gonna need some serious business goin' down for the iPad 3 to be worth it. I'm thinking an iOS update, or some unique hardware feature like the Smart Cover was.
