The design is frozen looong before CES.

Don't be too sure about that, remember how the third generation iPod Touch was supposed to have a camera but it seemed to be removed from the final product right before it was released? There was even a spot for it in the design. I think Apple is much more flexible.

As for iPad 3? Its the new Verizon iPhone. I'll believe it when it see it. :p

20 bucks says the iPad 6 will be out before iPhone 8, but shortly after the PowerBook G5.

I feel like that's about the same substance as this rumor. And yes, I did manage to make a PBG5 joke out of it.

Lmao yes, PowerBook G5 ftw!

This seems extremely unlikely, especially when Apple is known to not jump into hardware advancements or release updates just to beat the competition. The only logic I can see behind this is (someone said this already) if they developed a retina display and wanted to update the iPad 2 immediately to get that in there. Still, I can't see them calling it iPad 3. MacBook lines get display and processor advancements all the time. If they did change the name it would probably be iPad 2HD or R or something like that. But of course, this is all opinionated speculation.

ahh this is good new if its true, although seems unlikely :D I bought my 32gig wifi iPad a month before xmas, I knew it would be out of date soon, but that doesn't bother me but if the third comes out later this year I'll sell it and get that :D

Apple wont release V3, 3-4 month after V2 and fool all customers bought V2.
Marketing wise that makes no sense to me.

I find the timing of this rumour to be suspicious. It undermines the excitement for the new iPad just before the rumoured launch and this could result in people holding back from buying it until the next next version is out, by which time, they could be won over by HP's or any other brand's competing product. If Apple means to release iPad 3 anytime this year, they would not be rumoured to have made version two thinner, lighter and with more features; simple memory and SSD upgrades would have sufficed. Why put all that effort into redesigning the thing if it's not going to be around more than a few months?

I'm going to guess we won't see iPad 2 till September then, together with the new iPods. That is the sweetest time spot to ship new products, just before the holiday shopping spree. Besides, the iPad 1 is still selling like hotcakes, and the competitors are still struggling to ship theirs, let alone match the $499 price point. Even the best contender, HP TouchPad, won't ship till summer. Apple could simply wait till all the competitors start to ship theirs, and then bam, iPad 2, and people will forget about the competitors and focus on the iPad 2 for the holidays.

Seriously doubt the iPad 3 will come out in the fall. Most likely software only. Apple doesn't need to increase its release cycle. Not to mention its holiday quarters continuously break records as is. It doesn't need a new iPad. I call ********. iPad 3 in April 2012.

Why are so many people saying this is unlikely? It makes perfect sense - a better release schedule is before christmas. And with a retina display at apple's price point it will give the ipad 3 a solid leg up for a full year. brilliant if you ask me.

Besides macbooks, etc are generally updated in less than a year's time.

One of the great strengths of the Android Model is availability more up-to-date hardware, so this may be the only way Apple can respond to the impending slaughter.

Don't know if it will work though.
The strength of the Android platform are suckers who believe they need to have the latest and greatest. As for your pretentious slaughter comment being as dumb a thing I've read all day Apple will retain healthy profit margins while the onslaught should be directed towards those Android tablets.

I have high expectation for the iPad 2. If it only add a camera with faster processing power, then no thanks.

Well Apple might release an iPad2 soon which is slimmer and faster, and then move to a higher res. screen by autumn. But they need to ramp the production much faster than with the iPad1, which was released here in Denmark in late November! And even later in other places.
Otherwise the iPad3 would be announced before the iPad2 was even available in a number of countries - who wants to buy old tech?!

It makes sense since this is the year when the competition will heat up. It'd be nice for Apple to not only push ahead this spring with the iPad 2, but also have an even further response to the HP TouchPad in this summer.

I'm not sure why this story received so many negative ratings? Because it's bad with technology improvements? It's not that much of a difference than if it would follow a normal release schedule, with the iPad 3 in spring 2012. A 6 month difference shouldn't cause that much angst in potential iPad 2 buyers.

As usual with tech, it's a waiting game if you want the best - resulting in no purchases at all. But if you actually want to use a device, you also actually need to purchase it. If you're planning on waiting for a launch like this in this fall, keep in mind that there'll likely be another revision in spring 2012. :p

Personally, I think Apple will pull a "3GS" on this one. John Gruber had an interersting idea with an "iPad 2 HD" in the fall, with Retina display but not much else. Perhaps that could be this "iPad 3"? It'd at least make sense of the 2x sized icons discovered for the iPad, and the conflicting rumors leading up to the release of the iPad 2.

Well, exactly. Many people won't be buying these according to a 2-year plan, so no reason why it can't have more frequent updates, when the technology becomes available/affordable. I was one of the ones expecting one to be released late last year.

If this ends up being true it'll really piss iPad 2 owners - which is completely acceptable as a 6 month cycle would be idiotic. There would be little time for them to fix any potential hardware faults, and if one did arise then all efforts would be concentrated on getting them sorted, instead of adding features...6 months is not long in terms of development. They would get 3 months tops, resulting in a potentially crap product with poor QA.

I'm calling fake on this one.

No Retina display = NO BUY.

Why, what is wrong with the current, stunning, display?

Do you understand how much processing power would be required to put twice as many pixels as a 27" iMac into a 10" screen. It's a silly request, and if you think it's necessary then maybe the iPad isn't for you anyway.

Agreed, what company in the world has a product cycle of less than twelve months. It hurts sales. This rumor is a crock. It doesn't fit apples patterns and makes no commercial or marketing sense.

7 inch iPod touch... that will help make all of the Android tablets look like "big ipods" while the iPad is a "real tablet"

For me, that's the best analysis on this thread so far and set me thinking a little

I don't care if Apple or whoever releases new models of anything every 6 months, I bought when I was ready and I'll re-buy when I'm ready and I don't really suffer from the drive to "upgrade" every time there's a new release of a consumer electronics product, as long as the one I have still does what I bought it for reliably then that's fine by me, for example the TV in my living room is 4 years old and my car is a 2007 model.

But your post prompted thought:- Steve said 'no 7" iPad' not 'no 7" iPod Touch' and a 7" iPod Touch could be very, very iPad-like and still described by Apple as an iPod on which you can play great games - it could/would directly challenge the PSP and Nintendo DS portable gaming devices as well as taking on all the various Android devices. You could even stick a phone in it at a push.

A 7" device could challenge many competitor products and still not (quite) be an iPad. It could be a very clever marketing move indeed.

Not sure why everyone is so hung up on the annual refresh schedule. Why can't the September release be an 2.5 release instead of a full 3.0 release? In another words, their Spring release will be a major refresh (new form factor, better screen, front-facing camera) with the Fall release being a specs boost (faster CPU, more storage).

The iPad is eventually going to be Apple's biggest product; they can afford to update it more than once a year.

Well, it will have that and at least double the RAM. Expect better graphics as well, though that may be integrated in the processor.

It will also be smaller and lighter.

Of course, if you're looking for Retina display, you're probably out of luck.

That's my projection anyway. But just faster processor and camera? No way, the iPad 2 update will be pretty solid, save for higher resolution.

Because of financial stability. An annual upgrade cycle attracts bigger press and more people will upgrade. A bi-annual upgrade becomes a "so what?" event, and not Apple's style at all. New features and technologies take longer than six months to develop and test properly.

Why does it need double the ram? What's wrong with current performance..? Sure, more could be better, but further optimisation to iOS is more important than playing a numbers game. I would like to see a 128GB hard drive though. And for people wanting more features before they buy - what features do you want exactly. iPad does everything it was advertised as doing, and more, and new functionality is constantly being introduced.
