I think one of the things that people who are asking for more storage space need to ask of themselves is - do you really need to carry every photo, song, video, app, that you've collected?

I was guilty of this, thinking I needed the 16gb of work and home photos I had - going back to 2007. When I went back to look at what exactly I had kept, 80% of the shots I hadn't looked at in years. I fretted over dumping old work photos, because of the off-chance I would need them for some presentation, but I haven't looked back since then.

I've already gotten good at dumping apps I'm not using, because there just isn't a reason to keep them. It's not like the old days when you load a program onto your computer. You can and should be dumping apps, photos, songs, videos, books, etc, if you're not using them. You're not going to lose them, like the old days. That's part of what iCloud is supposed to be doing for us - keeping track of what we've purchased, shot, etc. No sense having it reside on the phone or tablet, if you're not actively using it.

I think the real issue is that people are lazy. I've looked at my stepson's Touch and even though he has 32gb of space (so space isn't an issue), he's got games and apps on it that he hasn't and won't look at ever again. When I ask him why he's not dumping old crap, he says "I don't care if they're on there". Go back and look at all the apps you've bought. Chances are pretty good that you'll question why you're keeping some. And same goes for music, videos, books, etc. Do you really need to keep a book or comic stored on the iPad or iPhone after you've read it once, twice, three times? For god's sake, dump it once you're done with it.

I'm sure there are people who could fill 16gb or more on a daily basis, like photographers, but even then, they should be archiving what they shoot and not expecting a portable tablet to be their sole storage solution.

Scenario: go to visit the in-laws, they don't have wifi, bring the ipad to provide entertainment on the 8 hr flight there and back, plus in the evenings. Load one session of cartoons for the 6yo, and one season of star wars for the 10yo. Bam out of space.

Icloud? No good without wifi?

If there is no larger memory ipads, then I am going to have to break down and buy somethng like the satellite go flex, or some other portable wfi storage device. 32gb definitely doesn't cut it?

I agree with jmgregory1's post above. Sometimes, I see how my friends fill up their storage devices and wonder just what they are storing inside. I have used up barely 2gb of space in my 32gb iphone.

Alternative - introduce your kids to a book. They shouldn't be spending the entire 8-hour flight watching shows anyways. ;)

I wonder how they concluded that on the discovered logic board, there is 16 Gb of flash memory.

https://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/19/photo-of-ipad-3-logic-board-with-a5x-system-on-a-chip/

If you google the manufacturer (Hynix) and serial no (h2dtdg8ud1myr), you will find this PDF: http://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j...sg=AFQjCNEaYBt8HSmsdQVdowlFuubtw8XYCw&cad=rja

Find the serial no, and you will see that the chip actually has 128Gb. The only thing that's not clear to me, is whether that means this logic board has 2x128=256Gb, or that both chips together have 128Gb.

Good news for people hoping for more than 64Gb I would say...

That datasheet lists storage capacities in bits. 128 Gb = 16 GB.

Wow, that's a nice find, if that's the case then that's some serious iPad. :)

But, I guess that would mean that iPad would most definitely be more than 1000 U$.
I would rather buy a Macbook Air for that amount of money.

Must be a prototype board, and if that's true then that A5X could be wrong as well.

Edit : As jaytv111 said, its in bits, not bytes.
And in the same PDF there is 512 Gb, should ring a bell, they don't exist do they(512GB)

So, with 100 songs (ish), no movies and only the apps I will use when away you are saying I am being profligate? I shoot RAW and AVCHD and JPEG (maybe 300 photographs a day and and 120 minutes of video a day) using a Nikon D200 and a Panasonic GH-1. Remember, that this is a one time location visit so I shall be auto bracketing photos as well - just in case.

I have a terrabyte of photographs and similar in video back at home. I really do not see me having every photo, video, piece of music etc on an iPad.

I can only carry 8kg in weight for everything (including clothes, boots, solar charger etc). There will be no wifi, 3g or any other device to transfer data to. I will be in the field for two weeks. You tell me what I should pack then that meets my requirements.

Remember it is also necessary to be able to view photographs to be able to see whether they are acceptable.

How on earth am I supposed to back up data? I know plenty of people who are in a similar situation to me. Even people who go on holidays where they are away from 3G signals or wifi will have problems. Saying "use multiple memory cards" is fine, but even then I need some way to have multiple copies of photos and to be able to view them.

Always amazing to me the type of judgement total strangers are willing to toss around. I bought the ipad originally solely as an ebook reader, and have hundreds of books stored in it, many of them kids books. Trust me, that area is well covered. Usually only spend an hour watching a movie. I appreciate your concern. Not.

Nice throw down, though. Smiley doesn't cover it.

My needs are not your needs, and I feel I need more storage space. Just because you don't doesn't mean that those who do are doing somethng wrOng.

I think everyone needs to stop deluding themselves into hoping for a 128GB iPad 3. I wish there was one, but its not going to happen. Not this year.

My own guess:

Slightly thicker: definite
Retina display: definite
Better camera(s): definite
16/32/64: most probably
Pricing the same: most probably
Quad core: probably
LTE: possibly

Beg to differ. There wasn't an actual "need" for these devices until Apple provided them. The same things were already being accomplished - just in other (albeit clumsy) ways. That is the beauty and innovation which is Apple. But even Henry Ford eventually had to offer a "red" car. :)

For "our" sake, I welcome the day when somebody else eventually succeeds.

I just find it comical that the Apple cheerleaders continue to devote undying love for the largest company on the planet and blindly hope for it to get even more powerful and dictatorial. :D

Nice spin. Quite hi-larry-us to paint me as an Apple cheerleader when you surely are an Fandroid, or maybe just a plain 'ol h8tr.

Go on believing there was no actual need for the iPod, iPad, iPhone, or MB Air. Sales and copycat products would contradict that fact. Truth is MP3s were niche devices before the iPad, and Palm and BBs marketshare evaporated very quickly after the iPhone matured. Now Apple has ushered in the era of tablet computing -- even Microsoft understands this as they release Windows 8. Some other company could have done this, but none did... save for a feature here or there, they all follow Apple's lead.

You seem to have a knack at missing other people's points and replying to straw men.

No, I think you don't really understand your own arguments and have a tin ear when it comes to listening to others.

A windows netbook with a 320 GB or 500 GB hard-drive and 8-9 hours battery life. There are plenty of those, most of them cheaper than the iPad. The 1 kg difference should be more than worth the added benefits if you are a pro photographer.

You really don't have a clue do you. I'm tired of arguing with people like you who simply don't get it. I want what I want and I don't have to justify it to you or anyone else. I want a 128GB version. I suspect a lot of other people also want a 128GB version. Apple should respect the genuine requirements of their customers and release a 128GB version. There is absolutely no reason I can see why Apple can't release a 128GB version. The cost of the flash memory has finally started to fall over the past few years. The more Apple tries to play this cat and mouse game where they upgrade each model at little bit every year in order to encourage users to upgrade every year the more they will start to alienate customers who are starting to feel a little bit cheesed off.

It may be true that "a lot of other people" want 128GB. And they certainly have every right to "want" that (or anything else, really).

I suspect it's also true that, regardless of what people say they want, Apple knows 99.9% of iPads aren't getting filled up and there is no compelling business reason to offer bigger ones. Unless they know otherwise, in which case we'll get bigger iPads.

Very true. competition is getting closer. If they dont make this a big update, the competition will already have something on par within 3 months. Apple wont be able to fight that.

Although its still a long way to go before iOS, the software side of apple, gets beaten. lots of games, apps, and stress free.

Thumbs up if it annoys you when people insist on installing their entire music collection on every device they have, only to listen to the same two or three playlists all the time!

I do it. Then again the four playlists that I listen to are 90% of my collection.

----------

so now you would carry two devices to make up for carrying one?

And that is how we want it. No one is telling you to give up your laptop and o things the way we say to do it, so extend the courtesy back and stop being a jerk

I don't see the point of carrying around 1080p video on a 9.7 inch screen. And your kids could care less if sponge bob square pants is slightly less crisp.

I solely watch video on my iPad and most of the time I don't notice that I'm not watching HD. If it comes down to storing 3 SD movies or 1 HD I'd rather just carry around the SD and be happy I can carry more.

This is probably nothing:

But today at the local mall, two FedEx trucks delivered several large pallets wrapped in black opaque plastic to the local Apple Store here in northern Los Angeles.

All shipments come like that

----------

Mr. X says no 128gb. Its confirmed already. Mr. X from 9to5mac never has been wrong ive heard :(

There is a first time for everything

Until Apple says it, it's still just a rumor

----------

Because the folks at Apple don't understand the competition and are mindlessly going for short-term profits?

I would say it is the competition not Apple with such issues

Ooops you again seem to have missed about 10 paragraphs of arguments...

No that's not the case, they know they have to bait you with something to upgrade next year, and the compelling business reason is to give you something (retina) while they take something else away(adequate space) so there's enough incentive to upgrade next year too. This is a business tactic, which, like every other business tactic can backfire on them since they are very evidently effing about with their customers not offering them devices with a usability horizon of a few years but devices that will soon be obsolete.

i am with you on that one; only buy SD versions. Wish itunes gave you the option of increased compression to reduce storage size; itunes movies take alot more space then stuff I ripped myself.

Yeah, I know I could go back and reprocess it,bu I don't really have the time.
