Here's hoping Apple has secretly developed an impossible leap in technology, and the pixels on the iPad 3 are no larger than a single photon. Now that would be truly amazing.

In all seriousness, though, retina displays are really nice. I'm hoping there's something more to it than just DPI this time around. Hopefully it uses significantly less power, while being brighter, and the colors are better too.

Good to see some iPad rumors finally, instead of the endless parade of iPhone 6 stuff.

I hope to god it has a different shell than the iPad 2. I dislike not being able to discern the difference between models based on looks alone. Yeah the 3GS and 4S are alright, but those phones did not have anything revolutionary in them compared to previous versions. The high dpi display of this size certainly warrants a unique individual design that will mark this as IMO the real coming of the iPad. First Apple created the tablet market, refined it and now is truly delivering in a next gen experience.

I can't wait for the iPad 3. Bring it on! :)
What's left to perfect in the design? I doubt it can/will get much thinner or lighter than it is now. And I don't see Apple moving away from aluminum so what really would they do different with the shell?

The iPhone 4S Retina screen is sharp, but one thing I've been disappointed with is the black levels, and this includes the current iPad screens. The black level is very high (i.e. what should be "black" is actually "gray"). This reduces color saturation and contrast and is very noticeable in darkened lighting situations (for example, try reading an iBook in the dark with the "night" theme and turning the screen brightness down). Some of this is backlight leakage around the screen edges and some may just be the nature of the LED technology they're using. Would really love to see closer to true blacks on these screens.

And, it would also be great if you could somehow color calibrate these screens, they tend to ship too blue out of the factory, as most screens do. As iPads are being used for more complex applications, the need for better color criticality is increasing. iPads are increasingly being used for content creation and display. For example, showing clients your photographs or artwork. Obviously you want your work to look as good as possible, something Apple should understand. A lot of people won't need to or want to calibrate their iPad screen, but it would be great for Apple to open a way to do it you you are someone who wants or needs that functionality. Even downloading a separate color calibration app would be fine with me, and Apple doesn't even need to create it, they just need to provide the API for it and storing those settings.

A flood of iPad3 rumors on the day Microsoft announces its Feb 29 Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Coincidence?

But Windows 8 will not be available until another year. Also ARM Windows is a joke. I just hope Apple understand that moves away from it processor architecture. They did it before with Mac line.

Looks like Apple is going exactly the same way as they did with the iPhone!!
First iPad (ex. iPhone)
Second iPad new design with a couple changes (ex. iPhone 3G)
Third iPad same design but better inner components, much faster, better camera and a higher res screen. (ex. iPhone 3GS)

So if your waiting for your radical design change than your better off waiting for the iPad 4. (to tell you the truth Apple will stop putting numbers after their products so the next iPad will not be called be iPad 3 but just iPad. Same with the 6th gen iPhone....just iPhone) (ex. iPod)

So....we now have 5 options of the "iPhones" to choose with:

1. iPhone 8GB
2. iPhone 8GB
3. iPhone 16GB
4. iPhone 32GB
5. iPhone 64GB

and then we need to explain to the consumers, iPhone 16,32 and 64GB are twice as fast as the second iPhone 8GB, while the second iPhone 8GB has 4 time more pixels on the screen than the first iPhone 8GB?

What a disaster. :D

If the iPad 3 doesn't carry a 2048x1536 screen... will it receive the "huge disappointment" as with the iPhone 4S? :D:D:D:D

It better have a truly amazing screen, otherwise I (and probably many others) will see little reason to upgrade.

I'm worried about apple, if they don't design anything new and interesting soon then people will loose interest. Apple will go bust and we'll be stuck with Samsung crap for the rest of our sad lives.

The iPad 3 will be my first iPad. Looking forward to it.

Good for you, the iPad is great :D

sometimes it sucks to be a student. i wish i could say "take my money" (what money?) for once xD anyone wanna buy my half year old iPad 2? :p

gonna be jealous for sure, already love the retina displays on my iPhones

I wish I had iPhone+iPad+MacBook in the same time at once.... :D Hellooo... :) You are very lucky to have all these gadgets... in Hungary if you're a student, and you have all these things, you are called rich. :D

I'm also a student, and I've been saving my money for years to buy a MacBook Air, and I'm sure I won't be able to buy a new one in the next 3-4 years.

I have to admit that I'm starting to lose interest in Apple's incremental product updates a fair bit.

I sold my iphone 4 and bought a 4S, which underwhelmed me so much, I swopped back to a 4 again.

I can't see me wanting to sell my ipad 2 and get an ipad 3. A better screen and quicker processor isn't going to do it for me. It's not like the ipad 2 screen has poor resolution really. For those that don't already have an ipad, the ipad 3 will be worth waiting for I would imagine.

Try using an iPhone 3GS instead of a iPhone 4 and tell me before if you don't want an iPad 3
:p

So, what do you expect Apple to do with the new iPad? There is really only so much you can do with a tablet. Should the make it oval with a 3D screen or something?

It's a good point. I did that yesterday reloading both phones from scratch. iPhone 3GS was done first, so I was using it for most of the day while the 4S was loaded up with apps/music/etc. It was quite a stunning revelation staring at that iPhone 4S display last night after using the 3GS all day. :D
