To each their own

I see a lot of people taking photos with their iPads. Mostly middle-age and older people who are probably not terribly technically savvy. It is not something I would do myself, but I am not mystified by why they do it. They obviously find it easier to compose pictures and work the camera controls with a bigger screen. I find it somewhat amusing sometimes but I don't ridicule the people who do it anymore than I would ridicule someone for using a "Jitterbug" phone. It works for them and there is a market for it.

I once saw this toolbag at Fenway Park taking pictures of his family with not one, but two iPads. Of course, he was a Yankee's fan.

EDIT: Pic removed. Went over dropbox's limit. Oops.

To be honest ive made ONE Facetime call the day the iPhone 4 came out, since they've ive owned 7 Facetime capable mobile devices, so I guess thats not really a feature for me! I barely want to hear people most of the time let alone see them haha.

Don't underestimate the benefit of FaceTime when you're talking little kids and grandparents. And since I travel quite a bit, my kids love to FaceTime me while on the road.

Seriously what is up with these "cumbersome" and "not practical" for photos

posts, are you just all writing what you think is expected from others?

Be real...

I'm glad to see that at least one person still likes to Think Different. Kudos.

I bought my GF a mini as a gift and she takes pictures with it all the time. I do see people at graduations pulling out the full sized iPad and I think that's obnoxious. I'm guessing some think my GF using her mini is too. Lol. I guess to each their own. I use the rear facing camera all the time during FaceTime calls on my iPad 4. My sister gives me cooking lessons and I use it to show her how I've completely butchered the dish I was cooking.
Now just because you don't use it doesn't mean they shouldn't have it. That's my point.
Something that's value able to one person may not be for the next.

Since my wife has become pregnant we end up FTing our parents a lot more—especially my wife's mother who is deaf. Our family lives a couple hours away. I know several people at work with kids who often FT their families who live far away. With the recent ramp up I'm sure there will be multiple FT calls happening per week once the baby is here. I remember once trying to Skype my grandparents when I was away at college and it was horrible trying to get them to set it up and I don't think they ever got everything hooked up right. Now that they have an iPad they just click a button and I show up on their screen. They're really getting into it. Haha they even did some video and photo blogging on their last road trip out west. It was pretty wild because they've never been the type to do something like that. The iPad enables them to branch out.

TL;DR FaceTime is mostly for babies and grandparents you don't often see.

Oh and I've been using FaceTime Audio lately and the quality is really good. I prefer it now when calling others, especially if I'm already on WIFI.

Everytime I read about Apple upgrading the iPad back camera I remember this tumblr

http://peopletakingpictureswithipads.tumblr.com/

I really don't understand why people continue to take pictures with their iPads.

Although I think this tumblr is very funny, let's be honest: If I am somewhere with my iPad and discover a great snapshot scene or similar by accident... Why not? (that's still hypothetical for me though as I have never taken a picture with it myself.) On the other hand, I would never actively intend to to use the iPad as a camera, especially not for more than one or two shots. And no mercy with people holding their huge iPads in the air on concerts, blocking the view!!

Doen't matter. My Facetime sessions look NOTHING like they do in the advertisements. Clear false advertising.

Ming-Chi Kuo section

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo should have his own section here on macrumors. If any news comes from this analyst it must always be true.

Why does he have to me a tool bag? The best camera is the one you have on you.

I didn't realize this was even an option. Thanks for commenting on it. Looking forward to trying it out!

I've used my iPad camera a couple times...in my own home...where no other human will ever witness me using it...shameful... :(

Ive had 4 iPads with cameras now and still never taken a single picture with one. The most pointless part of the iPad, I wrote an article before the iPad 2 on why I couldn't understand why anyone wanted a camera on the rear of the iPad and I maintain the same stance two years on!

I never take pics with mine either but pics and video do benefit greatly from the larger screen. It is the only argument that I cannot refute in the smartphone screen size wars.

i am only 20 and would only use iPad for any photos period

just because you mentioned it. my dad would not, he is into real camera's and his iPhone. I for one, and most of my school mates would only use iPhone.

you must be way older to not want to use iPad only.
peace

A better camera might not be the top of my wish list, but I have seen people taking pictures of pubs/clubs etc for websites on their tablets. The results are often an insult to the look of the venue, so I think an improved camera would be a good selling point for some professions.

Flagged for posting spam from the biggest photography douchebag.

Pretty much everything on that article was correct thought. More megapixels just make a bigger photo, but it doesn't make the image look any better. 8 megapixels is more than enough for the average consumer, and if you want to take 20 mp photos or whatever, buy a DSLR camera.
