I know what you mean about the crashes, but your post is the first I've heard about battery issues with the 1. What's happening?

At this point, the eatliest 1s are more than 3 1/2 years old, so I wouldn't be surprised if some units have batteries that are no longer holding their charges.

Pretty much what Night Spring said... it's just not holding a charge like it use to. Only started really noticing it the last few weeks. Nothing crazy and not nearly as bad as the stock apps crashing All.The.Time. But I can use Pages with no issues, so until that starts crashing, I'll wait as long as I can to upgrade.

I hear that. This is the main reason why I'm planning to get a new tablet. I wish I'd never upgraded to 5.x. The additional features aren't worth the performance hit. Even a hard reset hasn't helped.

This is what I have learned also. I will never upgrade again because of the performance issues.

It will be my 1st iPad and I'm pretty excited about it. I originally wanted a new MacBook Pro or Air, but I really don't have a need for a computer. I now sync all my iStuff to my Mac Mini that also serves as a media/iTunes server so I can sync my iPad to that and all I really do now now my MacBook is surf the web since I moved all my stuff the the Mac Mini.

I want an iPad now, but I can wait since the new ones are right around the comer.

This is my story.....

I have had an iPad since the day they were first released. My first iPad was a 32gb WiFi model When the iPad 2 was released I bypassed it figuring I would do like I did with the iPhone and upgrade after 2 or maybe 3 years. When the iPad 3 came out I was lucky enough to win one from my employer, that one was a 16gb WiFi model. I loved it, but quickly realized that 16gb was not enough. But with a free iPad I made it work the best I could and when the iPad mini was released I bought a 64gb version. I really do like the iPad mini and it's smaller size is great for portability, but for certain things I love the larger size better. In addition, although the iPad's non-retina display is very good, after awhile I did start noticing the difference between it's screen and that of the retina iPad3.

I decided that I would wait for the iPad 5. So far though the only thing I have heard about it was the thinner and more iPad mini like look and feel. All that is fine and dandy, but what about performance wise. I also made the decision that the next iPad would be Wifi + cellular because I have been noticing that since a lot more people are using tablets and what not and although more places are offering free WiFi it is sometimes hard to get a decent connection. Even the place I work at it is getting tougher to connect during the busy tourist seasons. I also recently went on vacation and trying to connect at the resort I stayed at was next to impossible on some days.

When I got home I thought about it and decided to go ahead and get the iPad 4, with WiFi + Cellular and 64GB of memory. I got it through the AT&T Next program and I couldn't be happier. I may or may not feel that good when the iPad 5 is finally announced, but at the same time I now have an iPad that I can use virtually everywhere and it has enough memory to handle anything I need. When I won the iPad 3 I gave my iPad 1 to my partner and he is still using it to this day without any problem, other than being able to sometimes connect to WiFi outside of home. I am confident that the iPad 4 I just got will last a few years and under this AT&T plan after making 12 monthly payments on it, I can trade it in and get the newest iPad at that time. In addition, I can still use the nice iPad cases I had for my iPad 3 on the iPad 4. (I have the red Smart case from Apple and a nice leather case from Coach)

As for my iPad mini, I still love it and it will still get used. I may not use it as much for some business things as I was and may concentrate on using it more for Netflix or movies. Maybe I will pass it on in the future or sell it. Right now, still to early to tell.

Sorry for the long rant, but that is my story and I am sticking to it.

Fair enough if the iPad 5 is lighter and just a bigger mini, but if they use the same flimsy glass to do it like the mini i wouldn't be keen.

I totally don't follow your logic here. Of course the iPad 5 will have performance improvements over the 4. We don't know by how much, but we can be sure that there will be *some* improvement. And other small hardware improvements, such as the faster wifi to work with the new AirPort Express, probably a better camera, likely a stereo speaker like in the mini. Sure, we haven't heard any detailed remors yet, but common sense tells us there will be improvements. At the least, I would wait to hear the announcement of the next iPad, and if the new hardware features don't impress me, I will then but the iPad 4 at a lower price.

I suppose everyone's different, but I know I'd regret it if I didn't wait the two or three months and the new iPad had some feature I want.

I totally get the idea of waiting until an announcement from Apple. That still could be 2 months down the line if you go by the current rumors. That's just the announcement the actual product may not be out until a few weeks or a month later. Then there is the supply issue. On the current timetable the fanboys will all be there on release date, then with the holiday season everyone will be wanting to get one for Christmas, and there is all the people that waited just for the iPad5. Unless I am lucky, it could take another 2-3 months before anyone has any in stock. I felt I needed to upgrade to a better iPad in the here and now. An iPad 4 will not become unusable the day the iPad 5 is released even though the fanboys and magazine reviewers will make it sound that way. I know that Apple will boost the performance, it's given, but will it be just a bump or will it be a major overhaul. I think the biggest thing right now will be the casing. As for the camera, I don't use a the camera on the iPad, so the camera that is on it is perfectly fine with me as it is. Since owning the iPad 3, - which I got right after release - I can count on one hand how many photos I have taken with the iPad. For photos I mainly use my iPhone 5 or a Nikon DSLR.

I'm not saying I won't have any regrets when the facts of the iPad 5 are announced by Apple. I wanted an iPad where I can get the job done when I needed it done and the iPad 4 with 64GB, WiFi + Cellular was that beast and it is a good upgrade to the iPad 3 that I was using with just 16GB and WiFi.

I rely on my iPad a lot and I wanted to get something that I could use TODAY, not 2-5 months down the line. Under the AT&T Next program that I got this under, after 12 months of payments I can trade in and upgrade to the iPad 5 or by that time even the iPad 6 if I so desire. I am pretty certain that the iPad 4 I just got will last at least the next 12 months.

Ah. That's the difference. My work schedule is flexible enough that I can take a day off to stay up late / wake up early to place an online order the first minute they go up, or stand in line on release day. Using one or other of these methods, I've always been able to get an iPad on release day, so I've never worried about having to wait for stock to settle. But if you can't grab one on release date, you are right that the wait could be 2-3 months, so I see how it makes sense for you to get the iPad 4 now.

Thanks for the explanation, and enjoy your iPad!

Dont forget problems it may have. Better to wait a month after release anyway. I am getting a iPad 4 16gb wifi 4g today. Sick of the the small screen and no retina on my mini. If the iPad 5 excites me will sell it on eBay and get it around January when all the hype settles down.

My poor mother's 1st Gen iPad is nothing but trouble now (crashes all the time, very slow with certain applications, some apps won't work since she can't upgrade to iOS6, etc. etc.)... She can't wait to get the iPad 5...! :apple:

Anyone else peeved at the fact that the fourth gen iPad was released just months after the 3rd gen? The iPad 3 was my first iPad and I got it on launch day and I still use it daily, but just knowing that I could have waited just a few months where I didn't NEED the iPad to get twice the performance would have been nice.

But hey, that's technology. iPad 3 still runs perfectly. Won't be getting this generation iPad, or probably even the one after that, but we'll have to see.

I love the full size though I wouldn't ever go for a mini.

Is there a date or time period for the rumored announcement? I know iPhone announcement is early in September.

Speculation is October launch, but that's really just all it is. Apple is showing somewhat of a willingness to break their own "rules", so anything is possible, I suppose.

I tried twice with a larger iPad and the portability of the Mini won out regardless of its resolution. Of course price was a big factor as well so no go for whatever the iPad 5 brings to the table because while it may be lighter, it ain't going to be as portable.

Im at my Ipad 2 and this month is the last month the warrenty will cover. Im weighthing the decison of whether to sell for ipad 5 and buy extended apple warrenty. Afterall, i still work great and im too lazy to have all info backed up and transfer to new one.

IMO extended warrantees and Apple Care are a waste of money with iPad and iPhones. You don't need it.

First Generation

I'm typing this on an iPad I, which I purchased when it was first released. It has served me well and continues to hold a charge for many hours. It does crash occasionally, but that's to be expected wien an older system meets newer applications. I will get the iPad 5 when it is released. Having the latest and greatest isn't important to me.

Problem in Australia with buying iPads and iPhones on release (if they are different size) is the quality case makers can take a few months to get them to us. And you have to go naked or buy cheap crap to tie you over.
Better to wait a month or two let all the hype die off.

I agree to some extent, although if you're keeping the phone for a couple of years it's worth it imo. I went through 3 iPhone 4's, all replaced under warranty, due to dodgy home button. My 5's button is still perfect, although I don't know if that's down to better build quality or that I've been jailbroken since Feb - Zephyr means I rarely double press for the app switcher, so it's had little wear and tear.

Awaiting the ipad 5 very impatienctly.

I really want a 128gb one, but no way will I fork over 800+tax, plus accessories for one. (Comes out to 900-950)

Now if they can amek it 700+tax, then very possibly, but Im sticking with 16.

This way if they also come out with a retina Mini, I can buy both for only 30dollars more?

I will be getting the 128 GB or if there is a 256GB one with LTE. I can't wait.
