I did the same just bought a ipad mini for the wait...

I'm seriously thinking about buying an iPad 4, keeping it for a few weeks, and returning it. I probably won't though. I have a little hope that there will be iPad 5 news on September 10th. Although it's highly unlikely. I hope the worst case scenario is a mid October release.

I really hope 32GB's is the entry model.

first ipad (4 or wait for 5)

have been wanting an iPad since it came out but price an issue. although love new tech and work in IT not with MAC OS so having an iPad not a necessity and justifying the money has been hard. (recession hit hard - another long story)

anyway, had a great laptop that had an untimely death a few months ago and have an older laptop that i have been using until i make up my mind whether to replace laptop or get ipad but its days are numbered.

do have a Nexus 7 (the original) which was a gift from my employer (last July) and love it

after much reflection - realize that i really use my Nexus MUCH more than the laptop - for surfing, reading, listening, etc and that instead of replacing the laptop (i have three desktops so the laptop is only for portability as in on the sofa and outside ) i should just go with an iPad

did research of using an iPad for laptop replacement and found several real life examples that were very encouraging (i dont need heavy document or spreadsheet production) have been saving money for two years for either new laptop or iPad.

so last night went to the apple store and bought the iPad 4 64gb (no cellular as i plan to use my iphone for hotspot if i need it)

as of right now have not opened the box.

the clerk said that i have 14 days to return no questions asked. but sept 10 is further than 14 days. and if the rumors are true that new iPad may not be until October... that wont help me.

i tried (HA) to get the clerk to acknowledge whether it would be sept or oct and of course he said he didnt know. apparently they find out one hour before its announced to the world.

so i am sitting here still in a quandry - i probably will open it anyway since i do have the 14 day return window....

i am not worried about loving it - its just about the usual geek thing - i would love to have the latest and the best - and whether i should just wait... but what is the realistic time to get ones hands on the new iPad 5?

some of you are saying it would be several months before the 5 would really be available - i work and would not be able to take off to stand in line and if the reality is that it would be a month or two or three wait for actual delivery...

and then of course there is my usual caveat about trying new products - dont buy the first release of anything if you can help it. let others work out the bugs.

a few here have brought up the issues that must have been in place with the iPad 3 that forced Apple to bring out iPad 4 so quickly after... and the fact that you cant even buy the 3 at the store is interesting.

so what if that happens with the 5?

oi

ETA - money IS an issue and so that makes this kind of purchase a major investment. the option of selling the 4 and buying the 5 down the road may be something to consider - however, the drop in the price point for the resell would probably offset this - unless the 4 could be sold for 75-80% of current price this would not be an option.

what is the usual drop in price for the last year model?

I had a hard time without it, it was a PITA so now I feel good think I can sell it for maybe 250.00 I did get the 50.00 app card so I will be happy.

Not bad. That's near breaking even. I mainly use the iPad for gaming, so I have been gathering a collection of games over the past few months that are just waiting to be played on the big screen. I'm also going to start getting/making wallpapers for it that will look good for iOS 7. This will save some time.

I seriously can't wait for it. I need an upgrade from iPad 2 but not willing to buy now considering we're so close to the next announcement and release. I also want the next generation Apple TV :D

sounds like you CAN wait for it...

I'm waiting for the iPad Mini Retina...I was about to buy one in March, but decided to wait until now :(, its been painful guys.

I use it for everything, I bought and returned my new MBA due to missing my iPad mini, I was able to put away 600.00 for the next big thing. Lol

agreed... i also need and upgrade, badly, but i've also rejected the new nexus 7 and the note 8 because i know ipad 5 will be better than anything else out there. really excited for it.:D

I was THIS close to getting an iPad 3 (yes, three!!!) and a mini. 2 separate incidences. I'm sure it will be worth the wait

Yeah, iPad 3 is great value for money right now.... iPad Mini is just too affordable and easy to buy. Resisting it is difficult...

I'm guessing iPhone 5S and 5C in September.
I'm thinking iPad and iPad mini in October, together with new Mac Desktops launch

I hope there's more in September. A 128GB iPod touch would be great :p

My local Wal-Mart has pulled all of the iPads and iPods from their display cases. I believe they are making room for the new ones that might just be announced on the 10th alongside the new iPhones. I know it's a long shot, but why else would there be absolutely zero device's for sale. If someone has a logical answer, other than what I suggested, please share.

Looking forward to the iPad 5 as well. Love my Mini for travel but it will be nice to have a full size iPad for use on the couch. My eyesight is not getting any better. :p

Apple Inc. and its Asian suppliers are testing larger screens for iPhones and tablets, people at the company’s suppliers said.

Apple in recent months has asked for prototype smartphone screens larger than 4 inches and has asked for screen designs for a new tablet measuring slightly less than 13 inches diagonally, they said. The current iPhone 5 has a 4-inch screen, while the iPad has a 9.7-inch screen. The iPad Mini, a smaller version of the iPad tablet, has a 7.9-inch screen.

Apple is looking to test a smartphone screen that measures more than four inches and a tablet screen slightly less than 13 inches.

I think he's right. Probably gotta do with theft. Got me happy for a moment that we might get new iPods :(

I actually came on this forum to ask if i should just buy the ipad 4 retina? The reason being is because wal-mart is having a $50 off sale on the ipad 4 16gb wifi and some other deals with ipads as well. So the ipad 4r 16gb wifi is going for $449, i was wondering if i should just buy this model or wait for the ipad 5? Also, what is the usual price for the base model wifi iPads when they are first released? Im sure that the new ipads are going to have different dimensions and a new a7x chip, i would wait and buy the ipad 5 but only if its not more than $499.

Am I the only one thats not interested in the upcoming upgrade? Lol my iPad 3 is rocking perfectly right not with me.. I am waiting for iPad 6 or 7 I guess.. :apple:
