Have the original iPad

Been waiting for years for a worthy upgrade, but I'm learning to be patient with Apple. After the new iPhone announcement yesterday, decided to keep my 4s for one more year.

The iPad 5 is the one I've been waiting for. I think we all know what to expect from it.

I understand people upgrade every year. I would prefer my upgrades to be substantial. I think I'd have buyers remorse if I paid big money for incremental improvements annually.

For two weeks I am deciding whether to buy ipad 4 or wait for the ipad 5.
When do you think that will ipad 5 in sales?
I need to buy a tablet in mid-October at the latest.
Help me with me a decision!

ETA - money IS an issue and so that makes this kind of purchase a major investment. the option of selling the 4 and buying the 5 down the road may be something to consider - however, the drop in the price point for the resell would probably offset this - unless the 4 could be sold for 75-80% of current price this would not be an option.

what is the usual drop in price for the last year model?

Find a nice used iPad 4 and use it until the iPad 5 refurbs become available. Then sell the 4 and buy the refurb. If you find a great deal on the 4 you may not see any loss. I did that for the 2 to 3 transition and actually netted $10 on the sale of the 2. You just have to be patient finding the right used iPad 4 at the right price.

Cheers,

The iPad/Mac event is expected for the end of October, so my guess is the 22nd. Most of the time you can buy the iPad almost directly after announcement.

I have an iPad 3 which is still awesome and fits my needs, but im holding out for the iPad 5 which i believe will be an incredible machine.

Hopefully by then, the dev team will have released an untethered jailbreak for ios 7. Theres some tweaks and jb apps i want to bring over with me.

I must be on the same upgrade schedule as you...
I've had a wish-list for what it would take for me to upgrade from my original iPad. The only thing left on it is "substantially thinner and lighter" and it seems like the 5th generation will do it. (I'd like touch ID, too, but lack of that won't hold me back.)

So, I'm probably going to forgo upgrading my iPhone 4s and get an iPad instead. I only hope it's $599 (not $699) for the 64GB -- the iPhone pricing was not encouraging.

I'll be upgrading from a 3. It's served me well, only very recently have I felt performance on it has been going downhill, and ios7 feels at the limit of it's abilities tbh. It's acceptable, but it doesn't have that zip that I'm used too these days.

I agree. I currently have an iPad 3 that I received on launch day. So far, it has met my needs quite well and it's battery life still seems great. While I would like to have the latest greatest version of any of my Apple products, the iPad 5 would have to be a tremendous leap in improvement over my "old" trusty iPad 3 for me to take the plunge.

OMG with the Samsung S4 swype feature you could have updated the keynote while getting your teeth cleaned. Who said it's just a gimmick?!

This. I was really hoping for more storage at the current price. Now that the iPhone hasn't changed, I doubt we will see it on the iPad line. Bummer. I don't need a lot of storage, but 16GB is just not enough.

Unfortunately Apple knows this. Thier most popular model is the cheapest. Bumping up to 32GB would make me happy, but probably shrink their margins

This is one of the biggest complains I have about apple in general. They release too many hardware products too fast instead of supporting older hardware.

I bought ipad 4 a few weeks ago, 2012 rls date. And now they are gonna release ipad 5, wtf?

Let me guess ipad 6 2014 january?

I completely agree with you. Neverind these apple fanboys. My friend just bought a iPad 4 and I told her that the new ones are coming out (just found out) and now shes kind of p*****. I also bought an iPhone 5 about 2 months ago and really should have waited. Technology is progressing too fast, thats why they have to keep up. Its a little silly because who is going to buy a product every single year!

Apple has released a new iphone every year and the ipad 4 was released almost a year ago. If you buy a product near the end of its cycle, it's quickly going to be replaced by a newer model. It's just a fact and not an Apple issue. Actually, I find (it's mostly) easier with Apple to time purchases to get the most bang for your buck and top dollar for re-sales.

You also might be surprised how many people buy and update their gear yearly, I'm among them ;) that's why I'm here in this forum ..waiting with others to buy an ipad 5, trying to pass the time that seems to be taking longer than most of us thought it would be this time.

True but not everyone can afford to buy a new device every year.

Same here. I sold my iPad 4 and bought a mini to hold me over, but I miss the screen real estate. Walmart has them for $50 off and a $50 iTunes card. Must...resist..,

Totally get that. Just maybe try to time anything you buy Apple-wise to get more bang for your buck and let your friends know to help them as well.
These forums and the buyers guide can help you along nicely.
.

I feel bad that I didn't know about the iPad 5 :( unfortunately I'm not an iPad fan. I would have told her but what can you do.

Really hoping at least one of these things happen...

1) iPad Mini gets a Retina Display, 1GB RAM, A6 or better chip

2) Apple to make the iPad 5 start at 32GB for $499

I have the original iPad. Still works but I'm starting to see more and more apps requiring iOS 6. My other gripe with it is that it tends to crash in safari due to the lack of ram. If I do get a new one this year I'm still not sure whether to get the Mini or the 9.7" iPad.

I've got the original iPad as well and have the same grips. With Safari (or any Web browser) it seems anything with embedded video is crashing.

Another reason for I have for upgrading to the new iPad is to be using the same OS across my mobile devices.

With the newer narrower case for the iPad it will be interesting to see it in person against the the new mini as they look to be pretty darn close is size to each other in the photos I've seen.

I wonder if they are going to make any announcements soon. I hope so. I'm seeing a Galaxy Note 10.1 @ Walmart for $299 that looks very attractive. Please. Please! I need some info asap!

I don't see how Apple can do all the following in one go:
1) Give the mini a retina display.
2) Maintain the price of the mini at $329
3) Offer the iPad 32GB for $499

That would mean the 32GB iPad mini retina would be $429. I know there are a few people who will buy the mini at any price due to the size, but $70 is not enough price differentiation in my mind. And frankly I don't think Apple can maintain their margins on a 32GB iPad for $499.

Dont take offence, but even if you're not an iPad fan I cant understand how you can visit MacRumors and not know there was an iPad 5 rumored to be released. There's been constant news, mockups and leaked parts of it plastered all over macrumors front page for months.
