I did in fact open mine to see if it really did vibrate that badly. It does.

Case helps very little.

It's being returned tomorrow. Maybe if Apple gets enough returns they'll fix it.

I returned mine tonight. There's an Apple store about 2 miles from my house, so I took it in. Apple sure does make it easy.

I was sad to return the Air 2! But, I haven't used it since last Friday when I switched back to my big heavy 3.

I was actually a little depressed leaving my Air 2 behind. I hope Apple fixes the issue. But, even if they do, how do I know? It's not like they'd announce it because to do so would require admitting there's a problem.

Returned mine because of vibration

It was a sad night to depart with my iPad Air 2. The vibration was not acceptable to me. I compared it to the iPad Air, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPad Mini 2. None of which were even a quarter close to the vibration. I watch TV at night on mine while holding it and listen to music while surfing the web a lot. Everything else was rocking. The extra RAM and fast 8X processor were awesome. Hoping they fix it soon as I would repurchase in a heartbeat. I figure enough returns and they will get the picture.

I watched a video where someone compared the sound quality between the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 2 and there was a noticeable drop in quality on the Air 2. The person who posted the video called it "muffled".

I wonder if that and the vibrations are related. If the case is vibrating that badly, it has to be partially dampening the speakers, which would explain the muffled sound.

Either there's a variation in how much the iPad Air 2 can vibrate or else this is way over blown. Get over it!

I'd only be upset if some didn't at all. What a tiny thing to get so worked up over.

Maybe it's a tiny thing to YOU but for those that use the built in speaker may find this very annoying. Just saying. This heroin like addiction to thinness comes at a cost and we are seeing that manifest itself in different ways. Those are facts.

I do use the built-in speaker - I used it to watch an episode of the Trailer Park Boys the other night.
You're right, some people might find it annoying but people are making it out to be much worse than it actually is.

I'm on the fence here. I have an ipad3 and a rMini. I really want to upgrade my 3, though it still works great on iOS 7.1. I went to the Applestore in The Hague and gave it a try. The vibration really put me off. Also noticed the screen distortion issue; it varied on different Air2's but they all did it. One was particularly bad and showed the rimpling-effect by just picking it up. Little worried also with the reported yellowing on some ipad's. I had it on my rMini and it took a lot of hassle to get fixed (3 was perfect the first time and still is). I really don't want to go there again. I sure hope they switch to amoled on the Air3. I have the funds ready but i'm going to wait a little longer and see if Apple fixes these issues. If not i'm going to wait for the Air3 and hope for the best. How thing's are now I'm just not willing to spend 600 euro's.

It's not "making it out to be...". It's how it IS. Whether it's a problem is up to each individual. If you're ok with it, then that's your choice. Is it accurate to say that you're making it out to be a lot less than it really is?

My entire desk surface will vibrate if I lay the iPad down on it at medium volume. Playing clash of clans on the iPad with only one tick for volume, I can feel the vibration when pressing on the screen alone, and the entire time the background music is playing.

This isn't acceptable to me. I'll hold onto it for the next week, and if there isn't a software fix for the bass levels by the time the 13th day rolls around (that I've had it), it will be returned.

Wow glad that I've always used my headphones when using the iPad from the first generation. I'm no audiophile but listening to music I love on those terrible speakers never hit the spot for me.

For those returning have you thought of investing in some Bluetooth speakers like the jambox or is that too much of a hassle? Just curious.

I love the louder , better quality sound and don't care AT ALL about vibrations (it adds to the experience). I'll be upset IF Apple lower the bass in an update!

The only thing I can think of regarding external speakers is that I shouldn't have to buy accessories to enjoy the product.

I use AppleTV to stream internetradio, spotify, movies etc. to my stereoset. But I still use the speakers on the device a lot. Lying in bed watching tv on it, listning to radio when I'm ironing upstairs:p

I like it

I think the speaker on the new iPad air 2 is amazing. The sound is never been louder and I don't mind the additional bass.

I just don't get all the backlash? I can understand being surprised because no other iPad has experience the vibrations like the new one, the first time I felt it and heard I was surprised.

I mean anyone has a right to return for any reason. I completely respect that decision. But, for me, I certainly do not agree.

People that don't mind might start to one and if it turns out to be a build quality issue and we get iPad air 2.1

Glad I returned mine.i

Totally Agree...Yes I notice the vibration but it's no big deal. The improved sound is worth it.

That could happen tomorrow and I still wouldn't bother replacing. At this point it's debatable as to whether it's a legitimate defect that needs fixing. All that can really be said is that it behaves differently from previous ipads. For all we know it's the new norm and buyers can either adapt or move on to something else. Either way I'm not holding my breath for a "fix" that likely won't happen any time soon, if ever.

Settings, Music, EQ

Thanks for posting this. I love bass, but the distortion I was hearing at a couple of Apple stores surprised me. I will have to test this setting the next time I am at an Apple store, if this is all that takes it reduce the distortion with dialog/music that is great.

One of the reasons it's so loud is BECAUSE it vibrates.

How exactly do people imagine this "sound" thing works?
Brainwaves?

Coming from an iPad 2 and an iPad 4, I'm very impressed with the speaker and the utilization of the case as resonating sound board on the new Air 2.

I mentioned the vibration to the Apple guy when I swapped my wifi 16gb for the 64gb cellular version. He didn't appear at all surprised and just remarked that 'they all do that' referring to the demo units which I believe are all wifi only versions.
The new iPad has less vibration compared to my earlier one. I would say it feels about 50% less and although is still far more that my Air it is acceptable.
Whether I just had a particularly bad first iPad or the cellular option makes a difference I don't know.
Did a few sound comparisons between the Air and the Air 2 and I struggled to tell the difference. To my old ears they both sounded much the same and not bad for a tablet.
The down side of the swap is that the screen does not seem as vibrant as the 16gb one. Very suble but noticeable. Ah well, can't win them all!

I took a tube of silicone sealant and filled the bottom of my iPad two through those vent looking things. It is SOOO much quieter now and no vibration at all!.

I'm guessing there are more people returning for the vibration than buying for the improved sound.

I would think you could design in both if done properly. Better sound that comes through the speaker ports rather than through the entire device. I can't think of a single handheld device designed to delivery vibration other than a video game controller. The ifixit teardowns show almost no damping on the speaker modules.

I guess it's more about the total package for me. The vibration is so minor to me considering all the other improvements, which are huge if you ask me. The Air 2 smokes the mini retina I had. There is no way I would return the Air 2 because of the vibration.
