Indeed, it is a step back. If they want to make a smaller phone, then make existing 6s with 4" screen.

You assume that all the components in a 6s would fit in a 4" device and still provide a market acceptable weight and battery life. If not, then your suggestion would be an even bigger step backwards.

As for me, if it were possible, I would like to see an even smaller iPhone 4se with a down-clocked A10 chip in it.

"Who needs a stylus? Yuck!" - Steve Jobs, 2007

“I’m not convinced people want to watch movies on a tiny little screen. To paraphrase Bill Clinton, ‘It’s the music, stupid, it’s the music!’ Music’s been around for a long time, will continue to be, it’s huge.” - Steve Jobs, 2003

And then the 5th Gen in 2005 had video.

"It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore." - Steve Jobs, 2008

And then we see iBooks in 2009.

"There are no plans to make a tablet. It turns out people want keyboards…. We look at the tablet, and we think it is going to fail." - Steve Jobs, 2003

Again, 2009 with the iPad.

"Given that all tablet users will already have a smartphone in their pockets, giving up precious display area to fit a tablet in our pockets is clearly the wrong tradeoff. The seven-inch tablets are tweeners, too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with an iPad." - Steve Jobs, 2010

And then the iPad Mini in 2012.

Never treat Jobs' words as gospel. Especially in the 2000s and later, he seemed perfectly willing to change his tune if there was a reason compelling enough to do so. Those of us clamoring for the Pencil on the Air are doing so for the precise reason that fingers suck as writing input devices. And the iPad's size makes it ideal for many for writing input, and all the existing styluses on the market for writing input are compromises at best. The demand has been there for quite a while.

I quite like the design of iOS 7 and since. I felt things were looking too garish as of iOS 6.

Yes, there are few people who liked ios 7. But may be those, who are good enogh to handle technical things. But its certainly not for non-geeky person. I see everday number of people who are having trouble find out easy operation in their iphone. For example texts in camera app are so so tiny and thin, people cant even read it properly. After clicking on flash icon, many people dont even recognize that sub menu is opened somewhere in center of screen overwriting existing texts. Buttons in control center are damm confusing to know its on off status. You manually have to tap it twice to know its current status. Well known shift key appearance. All text are so tiny thin and plain that people with glasses or mid ages are struggling a lot to read contents on screen. Phone dialer buttons, unlock screen buttons, add button, icons in settings app all these buttons area became so tiny that u have to concentrate extra to make a precise tap. My parents loved to use ipad and now they are fed up with these tiny texts and hard to operate UI. They literally stoped using ipad! And ya reminder app, recently I found a guy who didnt know till now that you can create your list in that from below screen :D

Then he has no right to keep saying "Apple will always be Steve's company" since he's essentially been taking us back to the John Sculley era and undoing everything that Jobs worked so hard to build during his tenure as CEO. Jony Ive also had Steve to tell him when his designs sucked, it doesn't seem like Cook has any interest in reigning him in once in a while to say "that's a terrible idea Jony" because Cook is too much of a softie.

Unlike Jobs, Cook most likely has no involvement with the design process whatsoever because he has no vision of his own. Cook is a generic by-the-books CEO, he's not someone who has passion or inspires others to make the best quality work imaginable. That's why Apple has been losing its edge, because they have an ordinary CEO who is turning Apple into an ordinary company...
Can't say it better myself. Thank you very much!
Look at the protruding camera on the 6 and 6s. Look at the ugly antenna bands. Look at that hideous baby bump battery case!
And who in the world really needed a thin desktop!?

Definitely wanting to update my 5S, but last year's leftovers aren't going to cut it. There had better be a 4" version of the iPhone 7 this fall, or I'm holding out for another year. Get it through your thick head Tim, there's plenty of people who want a flagship phone that isn't phablet sized.
Wake me up when those blockheads in Apple learn...

Non-precise and non-tested Magic mouse 2, macbook with one port, after number of trials, rounded edges in iphone which is not at all comfortable to grip, yuck ugly 5c cases, and so on

Some designers should begin using their own design in a blindfold...or begin understanding DFMEA.

Excited to see what changes the iPad Air 3 will bring but rumours suggest there will be no Apple Pencil support or a 4K display. Just improved performance and speakers similar to what the iPad Pro has.

I'm also the only person excited to see what new Apple Watch bands are released!!
Love my watch. Definitely interested in the bands.

- Keep continuing sale of 5S is the best budget phone right now in market and for god sake don't try to do dirty cheap tricks to make older device slower with new updates!
- Give 32GB base model in every iphone. It will automatically comes into best primary entry level phone with all feature.
- Dont make your buyers feel cheated. You can give 64GB phone with price of 32GB, then why not for 16GB buyers? why to loot $100 of 16gb buyers to keep them tempting on name of 64GB?
- They are wasting time, efforts and their image to fall into budget phone. Well they have everything what they can use their current hit products to make them in affordable budget category. Why not make current product affordable instead of doing everything to make a whole new affordable category?
Agree with all you are saying, would just add: 2GB of RAM (or more).

This obsession with the pencil is simply hilarious.
All graphic artists all of a sudden.
All "needing" a pencil, else life is not worth living.

Whatever...
Just give me a quicker CPU, GPU, 4 speakers and that's good enough for me.

Huzzah, hyperbole. More like:
- Many of us being vocal have been using styluses of various kinds from third parties for years, and not just for graphics.
- Apple releases one that does it right. We go "finally!"... until we are told we must have the Pro or can't use it.
- A spec bump over the Air 2 may not be good enough to open our wallets, but actually addressing a use case we've been trying to make work in some form or another for years just might.

If Apple does bring Pencil support to the Air, they get my money. If not, I'll just wait until they offer something that is worth upgrading to. The Air 2 is not a bad model to hold onto for a few years.

If the keyboard is so important to the Microsoft Surface experience, why not include it in the box instead of charging $100-150 for it?

This has been posted in every thread here concerning the Surface and many here blasted Microsoft for it.
