Because the iPad 2 is a dog compared to any of the other models. Apple is a quality brand; the mentality used to be that it didn't matter what Apple product you bought, as it would always be something that would last and was always fairly updated compared to last year's model.

This is nothing short of exploiting consumers who are paying far too much for a product that should arguably already be obsolete. I genuinely can't see how they can justify this pricing for an iPad 2. Apple claim to only sell products they'd use themselves. Say what you want, but Ive/Cook would be tearing their hair out if they were stuck with an iPad 2 as their only tablet.

It has more to do with existing approvals and standing orders. iPad2 is approved w/ the FAA, and popular with educators. Those buying in bulk will surely get a severe discount when doing so, and Apple is able to give it to them with the iPad2.

It's not really geared at consumers, and continues to stick around for the bulk-buying customers primarily.

What makes you think it won't be available in the UK? Did I miss something
in the article?

I don't think personal pickup is available in the UK - so we have to queue :)

The iPad Air itself is obviously available!

( Edit - personal pickup is ordering online for inshore pickup. )

So if I'm planning to go around 2:30 after work, is it necessary to reserve one for personal pick up or will they have them in stock? I'm worried more about them having my model than waiting in line.

Which is the most popular iPad air model? I'm planning on getting 32GB Wifi only

What? I have and love my iPad 2. I prefer it over my Nexus 7 2013. And the bigger screen still trumps any other features my 5C might otherwise be superior at (when I need a bigger screen).

I am planning on getting the iPad 5, but it was not an easy decision. The iPad 2 still does everything I got it for just as well as it always did. In fact, the connector mismatch I now have between the iPad 2 and the iPhone 5C (I was on 4S) is a major factor that compelled me into upgrading.

The bottom line is that the iPad 2 is a great tablet. Even today. All its price does is make the iPad 5 feel like a steal to prospective buyers.

Absolutely agree 100%. I will get the Air but my 2 has been a brilliant tablet
since the day it was released. That's why Apple is still selling it!

I need 250 iPads for field reps.
They only run SalesForce and SingNow.

Why would I buy an iPad Air when I can buy an iPad 2 $100 less, get the same productivity, and save $25,000?????

iPad air will last longer in terms of iOS releases.

I'm still using my iPad 2. I'm ready to upgrade to the iPad Air.
Now, I just need to find a use or a buyer for this iPad 2.

Let's see, To bed at 8:00, up at 11:45, Space Gray 64GB on order, back to bed at 12:15.
Maybe my boss won't even notice.
Unless things get bogged down and I'm up till 7:00 trying to place the order.
Then it might be a tough day

There are probably some apple employees that would use it. Do they? Probably not because they know more about technology. Are you saying the 2 isn't a good tablet? Seems to work for people and they don't return it after 14 days. No one is being exploited? They choose to buy that tablet. They justify the price by one thing only, that people keep buying it. Is it Apple's fault?

Yes, it is Apple's fault. Jobs once said that consumers pay Apple to make the choices for them. Apple is synonymous with quality, and that's why people buy Apple products; they don't check things like specs, or how old the machine is -- they buy it because it's Apple quality.

There's simply no excuse for pricing a tablet this age at that. Similarly, it's pathetic that they're still selling the 4S with a measly 8GB worth of storage. Same goes for the 16GB base -- it's been like that since the iPhone 4. And good on them for raising the base price of the 15" MacBook Pro, it's not like it was expensive enough. Historically, Apple products rarely go up in price from one iteration to the other; it's the complete opposite. If they couldn't afford to price the 15" Retina at the cMBP price, then they should've kept the cMBP -- except for the problem that it's upgradeable, and the 650M is more powerful than the Iris Pro. And good on them for raising the price on the iMacs as well.

Apple is shafting consumers and piggybacking on their history as a quality company. Some of Apple's recent pricing when it comes to storage or specs is simply disgraceful, with both their computer lines and their iOS devices.

You used to be able to buy the bottom line, and that was good enough, because you're paying through the nose anyway. Now when you buy the bottom line, you're near enough forced into upgrading to the next model. I'm simply amazed that everybody's so unsympathetic to this fact.

I hope supplies are plentiful.
I could do without the PITA supply shortage BS that Apple always pulls.

I agree 100% with you but I would be rather pissed if they released a TouchID version 9 months from now lol.

Apple might. I won't be pissed. I choose the time to upgrade, and now is the time.

I currently have an iPad 1. The iPad 2,3 and 4 weren't enough for me to upgrade. The devices were all about the same size, this new one is substantially lighter.

I probably won't upgrade until an iPad 8 or 9. I know this going in, and take that into account when to jump for the next upgrade.

Why would iOS releases matter, or be a factor?

The Poster clearly stated the iPads will only run "SalesForce and SingNow".

I still have the original iPad running iOS 5, no issues with that and it is now mainly used as an AV / home automation remote control.

The point he is making is clear and so is the savings on bulk orders.

If you're worried then why not just reserve one?

Education customers.

Education still buys the iPad 2. Do you know why? Because some school districts require a minimum screen size of 9.5 inches to administer tests, or so I've heard. This gives them a more affordable option when their only choice is a full-size iPad.

Besides, I've been using an iPad Mini as my daily device for the past year, which uses the exact same internals. I wouldn't exactly call it a "dog." Would it have been great if Apple made the iPad 4 $399 instead? Sure. But to act like its completely worthless from only your own point of view is incredibly narrow minded.

I think Apple should retire the iPad 2 honestly and move on so developers can focus on the latest... I think the reason Apple keeps the iPad 2 around is because the iPad mini shares the same screen as the iPad 2.

I think they keep it around because the iPad 2 is what you see in kiosks, restaurants, etc. I don't think "normal" consumers buy them, but corporations and schools buy tons of them and they have already invested in the 30-pin infrastructure.

I bet the iPad2 sticks around even on the next revision-- though maybe only available by special order.

It's the iPad version of the eMac. Maybe it'll be called the ePad?
