i'm pretty sure that stocks of iPad Air would be really high and iPad Mini Retina really low just to force people on spending more

Makes you wonder what they'll call the next few generations. iPad Helium.. iPad Hydrogen?

I don't think the names will change at all. new iPad mini, new iPad air.

Not any different than having iMac/Mac mini/Mac Pro or Macbook Air/Macbook Pro and updating them without changing the name every year. Though they run iOS and not OS X, I think Apple and consumers are treating iPads as personal computing devices that don't get upgraded every year or two like a smart phone. You need to make the difference in yearly models for iPhones clear because people are always upgrading to the latest and greatest when their contract expires.

I think this is a move to consolidate and standardized the lineup around the particular screen sizes. Same experience across the line up, and you pick how big a screen you want to work with and how portable you need it to be.

It's cute that apple thinks setting up in store pick up means you don't have wait in line. The only thing in store pick up does is guarantee you a product.

I for one can tell you it feels a lot better waiting in line knowing you're guaranteed one rather than waiting and not knowing.

----------

It's to plan out future iPads.

----------

Buying the air and selling it when the next gen comes out

What he said :)

----------

So if I'm planning to go around 2:30 after work, is it necessary to reserve one for personal pick up or will they have them in stock? I'm worried more about them having my model than waiting in line.

Which is the most popular iPad air model? I'm planning on getting 32GB Wifi only

Just order for in store pickup so you won't have to worry. That way you can take your time picking it up.

----------

When will the iPad Mini Retina be available?

Apple hasn't announced a release date yet. No one knows...

Yes, it is Apple's fault. Jobs once said that consumers pay Apple to make the choices for them. Apple is synonymous with quality, and that's why people buy Apple products; they don't check things like specs, or how old the machine is -- they buy it because it's Apple quality.

There's simply no excuse for pricing a tablet this age at that. Similarly, it's pathetic that they're still selling the 4S with a measly 8GB worth of storage. Same goes for the 16GB base -- it's been like that since the iPhone 4. And good on them for raising the base price of the 15" MacBook Pro, it's not like it was expensive enough. Historically, Apple products rarely go up in price from one iteration to the other; it's the complete opposite. If they couldn't afford to price the 15" Retina at the cMBP price, then they should've kept the cMBP -- except for the problem that it's upgradeable, and the 650M is more powerful than the Iris Pro. And good on them for raising the price on the iMacs as well.

Apple is shafting consumers and piggybacking on their history as a quality company. Some of Apple's recent pricing when it comes to storage or specs is simply disgraceful, with both their computer lines and their iOS devices.

You used to be able to buy the bottom line, and that was good enough, because you're paying through the nose anyway. Now when you buy the bottom line, you're near enough forced into upgrading to the next model. I'm simply amazed that everybody's so unsympathetic to this fact.

The iPad 2 is still Apple Quality. I guess it isn't up to par for YOU. Steve also sold 8 GB phones. Steve raised the price of the 15". Tim lowered the price of the rMBPs. No one is forcing you to use Apple BTW. If something isn't enough for you, you can switch or pay up. The Nissan Versa isn't powerful enough for you? Well I guess you should bitch about it more. Maybe someone at corporate will listen.

----------

There might be. I'm annoyed because this is just a marketing ploy to get people more excited about a product that hasn't evolved that much.

And dude, I'm allowed to express my opinion. For decades products have all been striving to get thinner, lighter while packed with better specs. Following that trend and throwing a new name on a product is the type of marketing ploy I expect from Samsung. Not Apple.

Apple is a marketing and hardware company. I don't know of a better company at marketing than Apple. Samsung doesn't come close to Apple's caliber.

Don't necessarily like to wake up at 3AM. I'm an East coaster

Then you must not like being guaranteed one :D

----------

If this is the case, I would potentially be able to order online at midnight PST and pick up around 6:30 PM after work, correct?

Yes

----------

It's cute that you have apparently never used personal pickup yet think you have to wait in line anyway. You don't.

Well when I did in store pick up for my 5S I got there and told them I was there for my in store pick up and they said.
"Ok sir wait right here, someone will be with you shortly.....there's a few people ahead of you" I don't know if that count to what you're exactly referring to,but that's what happened to me.

Wow, how aggressive. Nice way to get your point across, by the way. The best way to get somebody to listen to you is to jump down their throats.

I don't know how you can justify an 8GB iPhone 4S. Please, enlighten me. The iWork apps alone take 5-6 GB. The OS takes a good few GB. You've got nothing left. Yes, the 4S is a fine phone -- the 8GB storage isn't. If you really think it's acceptable for a company of Apple's caliber to still be selling 8GB phones in 2013, there's absolutely no point in continuing this argument. I envy your level of ignorance.

Guess what? People can still use Apple products but be disappointed with certain elements of the company. But I guess expressing my opinion now constitutes as 'bitching', in your eyes.

Only lots of people telling what they get and can't really explain why.
They are not different enough. Even the price difference isn't a deciding factor anymore.
Yep. I think the best thing is decide how you plan to use it most, then narrow it down from there. Some like the smaller mini for portability, others, prefer more screen real estate yet lighter weight so go with the Air. ;)

A) I generally do not care what others think. B) I like the feature on my 5S. C) I do not need an iPad so I do not mind waiting. D) Whom said that I was crestfallen?

There are a vocal number of individuals that seem to think that Apple has given us a lump of coal for Christmas, instead of carefully calibrating what they think is a viable product in today's marketplace.

The name implies an impending iPad Pro product which will exist alongside the iPad Air product line.

I'm curious what will make this iPad Pro a pro model. Short of making it a iOS/OSX hybrid device or adding a USB port/file system, I can't think of anything that could make it pro. Giving it a larger screen doesn't make it pro in my eyes.

I will not be getting one. I won't be waiting for the next model either.

Now, don't get me wrong...

I LOVE the new iPad Air. Better specs, smaller size, standard great :apple: product release. Name change does make room for a iPad Pro... with a 4K screen... please, Apple? :) I would have loved to see a 32GB base model, but with so much stuff moving to the cloud or remote access over cellular nowadays, most can still live with 16GB.

-HOWEVER-

One thing I really don't get is people complaining about the new iPad Mini's price. IT IS NOW THE EXACT SAME AS THE IPAD AIR, ONLY SMALLER. I remember a time when people paid a hefty premium to get top-notch professional-grade performance in a smaller package. Now, you can get a more portable device with the same capability for $100 less. The A5 and non-retina screen really hampered the original Mini. Now, I have absolutely no reason not to get a Mini instead of the Air.

You're awesome, but sorry, Air :(

(And yes, it is truly annoying to have to wade through general rehash about Apple's greediness, iPad vs. Whatever, et al., just to get the this forum's titled content. Please take it to the many other threads on your topic. Thanks. )

Does selecting Personal Pick-up GUARANTEE that that iPad model will be at that Apple store that same day for pick-up?

I'm skipping model this and waiting for the iPad with TouchID. Anyone else on the same boat?

I'll skip both. I still don't see the purpose of a tablet when I can get an ultrabook for the same money - and that ultrabook actually has - GASP! - a keyboard! And is even more comfortable to use in bed. On a couch. Or basically anywhere. I can understand the concept of phablets - those are truly mobile and can serve as both a phone and something like an iPad Mini or Nexus 7. It doesn't make any sense to carry around two devices when one can do the job alone.

TouchID... Fingerprint sensors are a very bad idea on any device. I have one on my work notebook and NEVER used it in five years. And NEVER will. Fingerprints are usernames, not passwords. We leave our fingerprints everywhere. They should never be used to authenticate a user, only to identify him. No biometric information should ever be used for authentication, for that matter. Many security specialists have been saying this for years, and with a little thinking it is easy to see that they are absolutely right about it.

I would presume that the 4S with 8GB storage is only intended for people who really just want to use their iPhone as a phone and maybe an internet communicator. It's for the people who will never have the desire to download any apps. Those people do still exist, and I know quite a few of them in fact. It's also a nice, free (subsidized), "gateway smartphone" for people who haven't yet become accustomed to touchscreen smartphones.

Apple is in the business of making great products to make great profits. The truth is, people will continue to buy the iPhone 4S, whether we like it or not.

I like the iOS/OSX hybrid idea! It would be like Windows 8, only good.

My wishlist:

4K screen
USB
Lightning connector (storage or video out)
Memory card slot
Some kind of ridiculous processor (A8X?)
iOS versions of Pro apps (final cut, aperture, etc.)
Satellite internet and a built-in DSLR camera? ha.

I'm wondering now if the 4s will outlive the 5s, based on the longevity of the iPad 2 and manufacturing issues with the 5/5s. I love my 4s, but I'm ready to upgrade to the 5s, maybe to the iPhone 6 next year with T-Mobile's Jump.

iPad Air or iPad mini

I can't decide. Which one do you prefer and why?

Loved the mini when it came out and the new one with Retina and an upgraded processor makes even more sense.

But: with a bigger iPhone coming out next year I don't want two small portable devices and may now go back to a full size ipad which together with the bigger iPhone will be a perfect combination.

Though with enough overtime both pads would be sweet, or would that be greedy?

I have been doubting they will sell an "iPad Pro"...with a 12" screen or whatever. But, it is starting to make sense. I won't be surprised if they do.

Why does anyone think that anyone here knows

a) How many people will show up at each store
b) How many ipads will be at each store
c) How many of each type of Ipad will be at each store.

Since nobody can answer and of those, they surely can not tell you if they will have a few, many or none at 2:30.

I'm sorry if this was answered already, does anybody know if you pay first via online or inside the store?

You do what you want to do with your money...the beauty of free market. :) Although I can say, I would not personally get both. Would not need both.

You pay online first. Although, they MAY have an option to pay at store, probably not.

I wanted a Mini but depending on cost (under contract) and supply I might be better off with the bigger one, especially since it's much lighter that the old ones.
