priced way too high. there is no reason for such a price hike on apps such as flight path :p. the market will sort the prices out real quick.

I'm sure that some developers will figure out a way to detect whether you've purchased the $2.99 iPhone version and then only make you pay $5 extra for the $7.99 iPad version. And, some will know that you own the other version and not care! :)

are these apps really "HD"? like 720p or 1080p, or is it just a tag? isn't it kind of misleading ?

omg, im gonna be buying so many more apps than my iphone...i dont buy to many as it is since i dont like playing on a small screen so much, but flight control on the ipad??? Sign me up!!! Can not wait!!! hmmm the 32 GB is sounding better and better

I won't judge the prices until I see what sort of things they have added to make their apps "iPad" apps. If like someone mentioned and Flight control simply adds a few more airports or has more stuff on the screen, I'll pass at 5 bucks. If they add additional gameplay elements or challenges then maybe.

Not really worried about price thought, they will all drop rather fast if people don't buy them at $9.99. The app store prices move very fast to keep themselves in the "Top 25" or whatever they are trying to achieve, just as Cromag Rally hit the iPhone at $9.99, it was $4.99 within a few weeks if I recall.

Remember, developers will be only too aware that there will be a limited number of 'designed for iPad' apps available on launch day - and the tens (or hundreds) of thousands of people buying an iPad on launch day are going to want to install at least one iPad specific app to test the full experience.

Therefore, developers will obviously want to cash in on that opportunity. As others have said though, prices will drop in the following weeks and months.

Not expecting a free iPad app, BUT....

I really hope to see an upgrade price, if you own the iPhone version.

I would easily buy many of the iPad specific versions of apps that i bought for my iPhone. However, if i have to pay full price for basically (i know some have more functionality, not just higher resolution) the same app, i will be much less likely to dish out my hard-earned pennies.

Having said that, however, I do not think that $10-15 is too much to ask for an iPad app. I only hope that they take previous purchases into consideration.

That is all. Have a nice day.

Maybe I was the only one who thought this but I thought you would automatically get a free upgrade if you've already purchased a game for the iPhone or iPod Touch.

You mean how all of us Xbox users got free copies of Halo 3 for the 360 because we bought Halo for the original Xbox? Or how Apple hands out free updates of Mac OS for life once you've bought your first copy? This sense of entitlement never ceases to astonish me.

I officially do not want an iPad after finding out you have to re-buy a game just to get a higher quality version. NOT COOL!

iPhone apps will work on the iPad. If a developer wants to make a universal app specifically that works on both iPhone and iPad, they can and many will. But many apps will come in iPhone versions and iPad versions separately. Its completely up to the developer what they want to do.

For the most part games will be segregated as most game publishers do sell separately for each device type.

But the other side of the story here is that developers cannot submit universal apps until AFTER the iPad ships. That's the rule Apple has. Once the iPad ships then you'll see universal apps (i.e. apps that run on both iPhone and iPad).

For example, Pocket Informant (our app) is an iPhone app. We will be making our app iPad compatible. (we are already). We can't submit an iPad-launch release until after the iPad ships. Once the iPad ships, then we can submit a new binary that works in full screen on both iPad and iPhone. Anyone who bought our iPhone version and has an iPad will get the iPad optimized version for free at that time.

But its all up to the developer. And do expect iPad app prices to be more than the iPhone. There is a lot more to work with, the apps are going to be more full featured, and its not just a scaled up iPod Touch.

That is completely up to the developer.

Example: Instapaper Pro will be a free upgrade.

I agree, am I going to have to re-purchase the exact same apps I already own for my iPod touch?

There better be upgrade pricing if one already has purchased the app for iPhone / iPod Touch.

(big guys cashing out on their stock has me a bit concerned)

edit: OK, upgrade pricing and universal apps sound good.

what is up with the prices? the extra screen space requires 5x the price on basically the same app? rip off.

Yup. If it was as simple as simply making the screen bigger, then no. But in games now you have to redo most of the art work - which costs a lot of money. You have to put a lot more work into the iPad UI than you do on an iPhone sometimes.

Believe it or not, we don't develop for free. We have mouths to feed, artists to pay, developers to pay. If you prefer not to pay the iPad prices, get the iPhone version and scale up.

What are app developers going to do when an actual "HD" definition device comes out from Apple? Labyrinth 4 Real-HD?

nice to see that the prices are higher than on the iphone. [/sarcasm]

Its about time - the iPhone pricing structure is not sustainable. I don't know how anyone things that most apps pay a decent living wage for 99 cents a pop. Sure there are those that do because of volume, but most don't. Some of the high profile successes at 99 cents a pop barely pay the salaries of the people who make them.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that?

iPad apps are almost desktop-class apps and require as much time to develop. You must understand that iPad apps aren't just "bigger" iPhone apps. I for one am glad the apps are priced properly. It will ensure higher quality titles and devs can actually invest time in an iPad app.

I know I already posted about this - but please explain how you could hire and/or write this game yourself for that amount of money?

No, you can use the exact same apps on your ipad that you already bought for your iPod touch.... You just don't get any extra ipad features.... Which is fair since it actually costs devs money to upgrade apps.

A question for the developers...

Does it take any more effort to code an app for the ipad than it does for the iphone?

AGREED. If an app i simply upsized for the iPad, there is no reason to hike the prices. The only reason an app should be more on the iPad is if it offers more. For example if on the iPad you get more levels, more interactivity, and a lot more whatever, then it should be more.

But if its just the same app that sizes to the new screen real-estate - it should be universal instead.

Does that matter? Do you pay more for food based on how long it takes to prepare?

Regardless I think the answer is yes.
