Those prices are wack-ass.

People aren't going to pay pro-rated prices for higher resolution on the ipad.

Greedy devs will find that out in a big hurry. It's a $.99 world now.

nuh-uh. $.99 world ended in December 2009. It's now a $2.99 world and rightfully so. Devs have learned that they can't always race to the bottom.

I would just like some credit for being a previous customer. Especially when the new game is mostly an "up-rez" of the iPhone version, if I could get a discount that would be awesome. Even if it is just a percent of the purchase price of the original, say $1 off Enigmo Deluxe for Enigmo 2 iPhone purchasers, that would go a long way. BUT, it seems Apple did not implement any such system.

The Instapaper people were talking about Universal apps though. Has anyone really described how those will work?

I would hope that devs include the iphone version with the ipad version.

eg buy flight control iphone for 99c
buy flight control for ipad 4.99 but its universal so you can play it on your iphone too.

I agree, am I going to have to re-purchase the exact same apps I already own for my iPod touch?

There better be upgrade pricing if one already has purchased the app for iPhone / iPod Touch.

(big guys cashing out on their stock has me a bit concerned)

edit: OK, upgrade pricing and universal apps sound good.

No upgrade pricing. It's (as of now) either going to be a free update via a universal app or a full price second application.

What a bunch of cheap...

So, you buy a (at least) $499 machine and can't pony up $5 for an app you'd enjoy?

I'm assuming this same logic would apply to the case/cover/bag you bought for your iPhone/iPod too.

Gimme, gimme, gimme...the entitled generation.

Yeah, because when you buy a Playstation 3 they take back your Playstation 2 games and give you new ones for free!

Or not...

Believe it or not, but there are companies that do let you buy a game and enable you to play it on other platforms.

Valve, Telltale Games (Monkey Island, Sam & Max), Amanita (Machinarium)...

Maybe I was the only one who thought this but I thought you would automatically get a free upgrade if you've already purchased a game for the iPhone or iPod Touch.

I officially do not want an iPad after finding out you have to re-buy a game just to get a higher quality version. NOT COOL!

How do you know the developers haven't added new content?

I don't know many people who would rather pay 5 than 1 Dollar for something.

Well, except some people in the Mac community apparently.

And yes, a developer should get a decent compensation. Lower prices mean higher volumes sold, so in the end everybody wins.

... If you're buying an iPad so you can play Flight Control, you've got way too much money and your priorities are about as out of whack as they can be. Good Lord.

Well, I'm not buying it to play Flight Control. I'm buying it to play giant DoodleJump (any news on that?). My priorities are rock solid.

Well, duh, the more expensive something is, the better. Hasn't Steve Jobs taught you anything? And you should always know: bigger automatically means more expensive. Sort of like XL sized shirts are more expensive than the M sized shirt.

There are also iPhone/iPad developers providing free universal updates ;)

$.99 might work in the US App Store - if you climb to the top charts.
I will gladly pay for great apps made by great developers.

Disclaimer: developer here.

It's very interesting to read through this thread, especially after having read the corresponding dev thread(s) on Apple's devforums (which for obvious reasons I won't talk about). Shows a difference in priorities, if ya ask me. Demand vs. supply, sustainability vs. familiarity of prices, like weighs on a scale. </poetic>

Please note that most apps have to be basically redone from scratch, UI-wise, on the iPad. Devs have the opportunity to add stuff that couldn't be done on the iPhone, even if just for the smaller screen. Games get redone with higher-res textures that look great on the increased surface. (Note that one of the big worries I saw was staying under the 20 MB 3G limit, which depending on the game can hard to do if you package both sets of textures in a single Universal app.)

Whether this warrants a higher price, well, the market has to decide. I think it might. ∞

you get free upgrades of the iphone/touch version.

what remains to be seen is if there will be a lower cost for previous buyers upgrade like they did when the whole music store went DRM free and you could upgrade your music for only the price difference. And we probably won't know anything about that until launch day or maybe the day before

$5.00 too expensive? Cheapskates. Software development isn't cheap.

If your building iPhone software as a company / to make a living , rather than in your own freetime / hobby, then you've got to sell an awful lot of copies at $.99 / $1.99 to break even. On the whole, it quite difficult to get your application noticed on the AppStore without spending $$ on advertising, which means more $$$.

Developers / QA like to be paid a decent wage.

Hmmm...

I sure hope doubling the screen size does not mean quadrupling the price of an App that was originally $1.99.

Sheesh

The prices are outrageous. For what would the ppl pay here? For the very same ports to a bigger screen or what!? the .99c model is perfect and now they’re ruining it with apps that cost 5 times as much. Disappointing.

Dude, some of us have bought literally hundreds of Apps. It ads up. Plus, that one of the primary selling points of the device. It's a platform designed to consume tons of easy access, cheap apps. If all the Apps suddenly, cost 5-10 bucks then many people would perhaps say no thanks to the investment.

You're right. It's way too low. Games for Nintendo or Sony portable consoles are priced much higher.

No way would you spend weeks slaving away to develop a game like that for only 70% of $5.

If it sold 100,000 copies at $1, I would. I'm sure developers are discovering where the "sweet spot" lies in app development. There is an optimal selling point where you will get the most money depending on how enticed customers are to buy it.

I think this thread goes to show the $5 for Flight Control isn't a good price point because hardly anyone will buy it. I wouldn't be surprised to see the price fall to $2 or $3 so that the developer can make money.

P-Worm

Unreal

"Greedy devs will find that out in a big hurry. It's a $.99 world now.?"

You truly are delusional. A dev that creates an app that he has worked on is greedy if he asks for more than a DOLLAR!!!!!

You are out of your mind by making that statement. I agree its a $.99 world out there which is sad for developers b/c they work there ass off for little reward unless there near the top for downloads but for you to say there greedy b/c they want to get paid more for an app is just ridiculous.

A game like pocket god, that is continuously updated and has a dedicated team working on it is only worth a dollar?????? thats sad for them. Yes they are making a ton of money b/c its in the top 50 but just b/c they have a huge volume doesnt make it ok to sell cheaper.

What shocks me also is how cheap iPod Touch and iPhone users are. You own the most expensive iPod with a touch and the most expensive phone/service plan with an iPhone and yet you guys cry about how much an app costs?

I am so excited to see Flight Control. It will be an immediate purchase. Well worth $5. I've been trying to find a half-decent similar game and none of them compare.

I'm glad to see higher prices. I think we'll see higher quality, more complex apps than the 99 cent model is giving. Higher prices makes demos even more important though.
