I hate to be that guy, but someone needs to say it:

Some of these prices are kind of outrageous. ESPN scorecenter is free on the iPhone, their website is free, but they are charging $4.99 for the iPad. The same goes for netnewswire. MLB at Bat is amazing, but should I really have to buy it twice (iPad and iPhone) on top of the year subscription that I already paid ($120) for mlb.tv? I love plants vs. zombies, but I already bought it 3 times (steam, mac, and iPhone).

I'm just saying...

competition will take care of that, just like iPhone apps.

Why is it when people want to install computer software on more than on computer without all the licenses, people get all righteous about piracy.

But with $1 and $5 apps people think they should get unlimited installs?

I said it in another thread and I'll say it here, I won't be rebuying any apps that are released as separate "HD" or "iPad" versions.

Theres absolutely no reason a universal app can't be done and released. Look at Pandora and IM+ (paid). IM+ is a free upgrade for current customers.

But the games are just ridiculous. Need for Speed Shift for $14.99? It doesn't offer anything other than a native higher resolution. Same game assets (textures, cars, etc) just all rendered natively at a higher resolution. Real Racing HD has a skinning feature, but its the same game, same assets, same everything for double the price. Same for a lot of other games like Let's Golf, Pac-Man, Plants vs. Zombies.

No reason these developers have to shaft their customers by doing this. I hope it turns a lot of people off and shows these greedy companies that they can't get away with that sort of thing.

Looks like we're still going to have the same quality control issues as the iPhone. xD

Why do you hate vegetables?

Why would they put Cardreader in the business apps for the iPad when
the iPad doesn’t have a camera?

Wait a sec- They also have SnapTell – “Snap a picture of any book, DVD,
or video game and within seconds get a rating, description and links to
Google”?

Is this some kind of April fool’s joke?

I agree and disagree. I agree that apps that are barely updated and require next to zero effort (case in point, the IM+ app - just look at the screenshots. They nearly just put two panels next to each other and call it a day.) THAT deserves to be an universal app.

On the other hand, AIM for the iPhone and AIM for the iPad are very different apps, and is actually designed to suit the respective platforms (well? I never said it was designed well, this is AOL after all, I am merely saying they actually put in the work to differentiate the iPad version and make it suited for the platform). THIS kind of differentiated app SHOULD be charged separately.

That's my two cents.

AND G700-1st Soft Camera that gives digital camera features to your
CAMERA.
WTF?

I'm just happy they are letting me buy some of these things early and get them on my computer so when iTunes crashes on Saturday, and it will crash, I will have a nice amount of Apps aready for me to keep me busy for a few days. I have also been loading my own EPUB books.

pagansoul, where did you find those books? I tried Project Gutenberg, but the ePub books came with no covers, and they said it's an experimental feature.

Do you have a source for high quality ePubs with covers and all that?

Tip/hint

Here is a tip/hint that some might have already done but I thought I would share.

In your library, under "Apps" add the "Kind" column and then sort by it. It will group all your iPad-only apps, iPhone/iTouch apps, and Universal Apps in the way it sorts them.

Also run "look for updates".

Then select a universal app and hit the little arrow that takes you to the app in the itunes store. then from there you can easily see how cool some of the universal apps will look once you run it on you ipad :)

I just did this with a few like Pandora, the Junecloud package tracker, and it was really cool seeing the iPad screen shots.

Wow

I have downloaded 11 free apps and plan on at least 4 paid apps and I do not even have the iPad yet.

It is on the plane from Hong Kong:D

Wow, I have to say I'm proud of you guys/gals. I agree that the prices seem high in some cases, and most probably will come down. However, I think this is actually the first thread that has not turned into an iPad/iTunes bashing thread:D, at least not yet. Now I can't wait to get mine although I'll most likely wait before I purchase very many apps. First up will be Pages, maybe.

Just wait - the trolls will get here soon enough

Pages is my first paid app!:)

I know, it seems crazy! I've done the same thing. 3 purchased (iWork) and 9 free iPad only apps. If I count the universal apps I just updated, I'll have 24 iPad native apps to play with come Sat. :)

You can get Batman books (EPUB) non-picture version on Feedbooks.com. They give you the covers but you have to load them yourself into iTunes (like when you don't get album art work from the database). Sometimes I Google other book art that I like better. The classics get a lot of printings and a lot of covers.

Just got the update notifications for a ton of Apps that now are universal. Sent thank you notes to all of the devs.

iTap RDC, Isotope, Implosion, Crosswords, and Instapaper all on the list.

good call. I'm now sending some thank you emails as well.

Here is something very strange: the BBC has an iPad app. What is strange about that is that the BBC Trust recently announced that they were delaying releasing their mobile apps.

I wonder if they submitted the app prior to the decision to delay and Apple went ahead and approved the app. In any case, I have screenshots and links to pages on my site, plus you can follow that link above to go to the iTunes page.

I wonder if the app will still be on iTunes on Saturday?

Universal App size

FYI:
This might be an extreme example, I just noticed that the "Solitaire City™ Lite" iPhone game went from being 4.7MB to 14.2MB for the universal app.

I totally agree..nnw is particularly ridiculous. I mean at that point why not use google reader in safari - they have yet to fix the bugs in their iphone version and have been VERY slow to roll updates. I see these prices dropping fast fast fast.. this is a greed gold rush. A reskinning using the same underlying programming or higher res textures does not warrant a double purchase, let alone a double purchase at 2-3x the price.I believe devs should get paid.. absolutely - but how can a lot of these prices be justified. I guess if I'm right the market will sort itself out -otoh I see a lot of enthusiasm leading to a big first week or even month with sales massively sliding thereafter.

And the important extension of this point, if they don't make money, they will go back to their day jobs and stop making apps!

Most probably have day jobs.. the average iPhone / Touch developer probably codes in their spare time.

If the average Joe can't make any money from AppStore then there won't be as many applications being produced, and prices start correcting themselves to a realistic amount...

The "Gold Rush" ended a long time ago.

That was my concern, about app size. I don't want to download these things to my IPHONE and have them be 3x the size, when I only wan them on my ipad. But, I have found today, there about 12 of my apps which are now showing on my iphone as UPDATES, but say UNIVERSAL, and I am sure they are going to be large files. Don't really want to just kill space on the iphone for no reason
