I would have bought OmniGraffle, but I think they are going to quickly realize their pricing strategy might need some work. Come on, AutoDesk's app is <$10. I LOVE OmniGraffle, but will have to wait.

If it's nearly as full featured as the Mac app, the price may be worth it. It would be nice to give a discount to owners of the Mac app.

I didn't think I wanted an iPad until I saw this app and another web page wireframing app - I absolutely hate doing Visio-type work with a mouse and keyboard, no matter how good the underlying software is. The idea of going directly from my brain to my fingertips really intrigues me.

Welp this sucks. Just went over all the apps I bought for my iPod touch ($80 worth) and not one is universal.

On a side note I can't stand Steve Sprang and his Brushes app. What a greedy son of a bee!!!!

For one thing the iPad version costs $9.99 vs $4.99 on iPhone. Yet he didn't add anything except make the canvas bigger (which is no more than going to the code and adding a new resolution to a white piece of paper).

So already he added $5 for no work at all.

Not only that, SketchBook Pro which has a crapload more brushes than Brushes and a much better program, costs $7.99

Please do NOT buy Brushes!

What I got So Far

Bump. It will only take one of you guys a couple of minutes to check:

Can anyone in the US confirm these apps for me? They showed up on AppAdvice:

- abc Player

- iWork apps (Pages, Numbers etc)

- Command & Conquer (iPad version, not iPhone)

These aren't in the UK App Store yet. All the others seem to be there, pages and pages of apps. But those seem to be missing. Any confirmations?

Maybe he needs to eat.

There's still a value decision to be made by a consumer. If the app is good, $5 more may very well be worth it for a bigger canvas, even if it required the dev to do little more than change some parameters and recompile.

All those apps show on the US store. I have a US store account set up as well as my UK one.

All of them with the exception of ABC player (you can't watch videos on the ABC site in the UK so they won't be releasing the app here) will likely come to the UK when the iPad is released over here. I have just bought some US iTunes store gift card to be able to download the iWork apps before then.

Glad to see Pandora built an iPad app rather than just depending on the iPhone one.

Edit: and Arment it! Glad to see he got his Instapaper app done and approved on time.

I'm happy, bring on my iPad.

Well, with all the higher prices for apps and media we'll be shackled into coughing up to try and get some use out of our big crippled Iphones maybe we should all start calling it the Ipaid!

Dave

Yes, I was being funny.

So READ: the average iPhone developer is going to make little or no money if they sell their app for 99c.

And the important extension of this point, if they don't make money, they will go back to their day jobs and stop making apps!

Agreed. It's pretty silly that all applications appearing on both platforms now read, "Such-and-such for the iPad". They should have made two stores.

Yep, I agree with you and the one you were responding to, it's a mess. Add to that the kind of de facto standard, but not official or universal, of now having "HD" in the title of the app, which is what a lot of people search for.

A separate iPad store would have been much better, and the universal app binaries don't make a whole lot of sense (for developers or users).

I must say, these apps are absolutely gorgeous. I'm still gonna wait until the next version of the iPad is released to think about getting one (the next iPhone is a bigger need/want of mine right now), but I can't wait to try one of these out in the stores.

I'm not sure if I'll be getting an iPad (probably will), but I'm glad that many software I've purchased on my iPhone previously released updates today that make them iPad compatible in full resolution. :)

I don't understand universal apps. Does it mean that the app on the iPad will only like like a blown up "2x" version of the iPhone app?

No, it means a single app will run natively on both the iPhone and the iPad. Most iPhone apps will run pixel-doubled on the iPad without modification already. How much work the developer put in to making an app iPad-specific will vary, some will have more advanced features, but text at least should be sharper than running a pixel-doubled non-universal version. Most will have more detailed graphics for the larger screen resolution.

I know most of you have probably realised this, but I didn't at first so I thought I'd share for those who are as dumb as me. ;)

I was annoyed that the Universal apps showed the iPhone/iPod Touch screenshots even when you choose the app under the iPad category. But the screenshots are there. If you check a Universal app, there is a button just above the screenshots that lets you see the iPad versions too.

I haven't bought any apps yet, as it appears that more and more are still being added. There are a few that I have found that look very promising, but this one especially intrigues me:

Effectively, you can wirelessly turn your iPad into an extended monitor for your Mac / MacBook Pro. If I read it right, it looks like you do this over your wifi network provided you download the mac based application. The question remains tho, if you are using an external monitor already, will this provide you yet another display???

Currently, I use my MBP screen as my main Mac desktop , and my Dell 20" Widescreen monitor connected for VMWare Fusion for work. If this works as an additional screen, I could use the iPad for iChat or Yahoo Messenger.

Super simple explanation:

iPhone apps - run on iPhone (and iPod Touch obviously) and most will also work on the iPad either in a little box or scaled up

Universal apps - a single app (one download) that is the iPhone/Touch app AND a specialised iPad app in one little package. So if you run this app on the iPhone, it runs like an iPhone app. If you run this on an iPad, it isn't just the same thing scaled up, but a redesigned app specifically for the iPad. The app knows what device is running it. So this is better than just the usual apps scaled up. This kind of app does both perfectly.

iPad apps - These are the ones that are iPad only. So, company X may choose to make their fancy iPhone app into a universal app that is redesigned to run on iPad as a full resolution app (universal app), but company Y might decide to make a whole new separate app which is JUST an iPad app, and simply does not run on anything else. That's what these are.

So:

Normal apps - can run on iPad, but it's just the iPhone app big.

Universal - one download contains an iPad-specific and iPhone-specific app

iPad apps - iPad-specific app that just runs on iPad

Universal apps for the win! I think the super expensive £17.99 I paid for LogMeIn Ignition just became one of my best purchases. :D

Christ, i'll be glad when this iPad launch is over with. Then maybe we'll hear about other things again.

Does Apple even make computers any more?

394 days since the Mac Pro was last updated. No updates on the horizon. Give me a freakin break.
