I made up a list of things that I want to use the device for:

work needs

WORD PROCESSING!
Some keynote presentations
Music creation

couch browsing
Facebook
Forum browsing
IM (instant messaging)
Maybe some flash games (or iPad apps)
E-Mail

So, iPad or PowerBook?

POWERBOOK - the fact you keep asking the question over and over makes me suspect you really want an ipad as most people are telling you to get the powerbook. Seriously at the end of the day the decision is yours, most of the responses I've seen on here people are telling you to go for the powerbook so if it's our advice you want then powerbook it is..go buy one and be happy :p. If it's a new shiny gadget you want that you can kinda do wordprocessing on but will have issues with format and printing then the iPad is for you.

Just to add a thanks in this thread.... Just been and bought a mifi from 3 thanks to reommendations from boblister!

All excited now and just need the darn ipad!!!!!

Your welcome. They are doing the best data deals at th moment by all accounts.

Another heads up for all the TNT UK folk waiting for tracking. It's now giving sensible information. Goodbye to our Greek friend.

hmmm I've only ordered accessories, and it seems that they have shipped those by royal mail, so I've no way to track and no idea if/when they'll arrive. :(

If you have a Mac already, get an iPad and really look after it.

 that's what you get from making fun of the Dutch.

Ups tracking's working now. My poor iPad is stuck in Prague (sent via ups Netherlands???) status is "exception", due to ups internal affairs ...
Ha, internal affairs... Bet these ... are playing around with it!

If you need to do real work, then buy a powerbook? a macbook or macbook pro :)

iPad is more of consumption device, which you can also do a little creating/editing on.

I got a MiFi too, I just sent it to a company called ISZOM (they have a website & eBay store) and they have a postal unlocking & firmware access service. Once unlocked, you can use the Mi-Fi with any sim card AND change the settings manually for any carrier in the world! I posted my MiFi off to them and they track it from start to finish -I've always been wary of such services but this has been really impressive. Just thought i'd give you a heads up if you are interested ;)
Apologies, I just realised that this sounded like a spam advert, but it isn't.

Decided to go with a PowerBook instead of an iPad. For English essays, I don't think the iPad will be efficient enough. :(

I thought the iPad would be perfect, but worries about stock shortages and the work ergonomics of the device sorta turned me off. Anyway, the specs aren't that bad for a PowerBook. 1.67GHz processor, 512 ram (going to get an upgrade for that), 15" widescreen.

I thought had already decided on the Powerbook.

I'm so happy this thread is up and running again.

iWork was released today in the UK, so I bought Pages, Keynote and Numbers. £18, ouch!

Still - the quality of these applications is superb. You could easily write an essay using Pages, especially with an external bluetooth keyboard or the keyboard dock from Apple. It's an amazing experience - no sarcasm intended.

I wouldn't call it "light" content creation either. You can do some serious work using the iPad's "iWork" suite (although you'll need an external keyboard to get the most out of it).

I've been reading such negative reviews of all three applications though (Pages, Numbers and Keynote). I'm assuming you're happy with them all then Mike?

I....can't....wait....much....longer........

This is killing me. I JUST WANT MY IPAD NOW :apple:

That's fine by me! I thought they might be £30 for all 3.

Hey guys, just wondering...I received one of the vodafone payg data sim cards today from eBay, but didn't know how you top it up! Is it possible or do you have to just keep buying more of them??? Thanks a lot.

You can buy a Voda topup or register it as long as you know the number.
If you dont know that then stick the sim into an unlocked or a vodafone handset and enter *#100# and it will tell you the number.

Hi, thanks for that, but I can't get the number because I believe the sims from eBay are data only cards which can't do calls and stuff. Does anyone know wether can top this type up??? Thanks

If you do as I suggested . Put it in a phone and enter *#100# then you will find it will give you the number even though it is a data sim. I have two of them.

I've been watching macrumors for a couple of years before I joined, but now I ve got to get out ( due to personal reasons)

Especially this thread with it's lack of trolling and the perfect attitude towards humor was a real joy for me.

I hope everybody in here gets his iPad tomorrow and will enjoy it, as I have mine..

Bye
