Both of my local Apple stores are in large shopping centres, so getting there very early wont really be an option. I guess there'll be a bit of a rush to the store when they open the centre doors.

Has anyone made plans what he is going to do on friday to pass time while waiting for TNT or UPS?

I didn't watch last wednesdays and yesterdays episode of lost so I have 3 hours of lost which I am really looking forward to topped by my iPad beeing brought to my doorstep.

Nerdiest day ever. Hard to believe I have friends...

Sounds like a nice day really! I have Friday off... not sure what I'll do. I think I'll need to peel myself off the internet and Twitter and chill out in front of the TV too. I have a backlog of TV to watch. Might be a good day for it!

Out of interest, what's the latest time that TNT deliver? I have to go out in the evening, dammit!

Ring them and ask them when they are opening and when the centre opens. AS I have said many times in here. The Trafford Centre opened before 7AM and the Apple store opened 8AM for the 3GS launch last year. No one else in the centre. No rush and no panic.

Yeah, i asked on Friday, still no news. I'll ask in the Arndale one today at lunchtime, then if they have their plans set in stone i'll ring the Trafford Centre one.

Just been into the Manchester Arndale store and asked again about opening times on Friday. I spoke to the same guy as last time and he said they didnt expect to know for sure until Thursday and to ask again then.

Sounds a bit last minute to me.

My pet hate is when they come up to you in one of these fast food establishments and ask "is everything ok" without the least bit of interest. On one occasion I said no, the food was cold. It went straight over her head as she obviously was on autopilot. And off she went.

It's almost as bad as when your served some food and they come out with that horrible phrase.."Enjoy". Make me cringe.

I know the feeling! I was in Pizza Express yesterday with my family and the waiter came over to our table and asked, "Is everything ok with your" and by the time he said, "meal" he was already walking away!

Having said that, I find American customer service to be a definite can do culture compared to the "computer says no" of UK customer service on the whole. My most recent personal experience example of this was when I bought this iPad - I called a Best Buy store (I'm in the UK with a friend in the US who did the shopping :p) and asked if they had any iPads in stock. The lady said the computer was showing no stock but she went and searched anyway. She found one, I reserved it and later that afternoon it was bought :p By contrast I quite fancy taking a trip to the UK's new Best Buy store and seeing how the service compares. Presumably it'll boil down to the same one-liners plus pushy insurance upsells (maybe I'm just being prejudiced, but I don't think I am!).

Just got off the phone to an Apple rep at Regent St and he said that there are people actually queueing NOW (yes with 4 days to go!) so anyone who is planning to get from Regent St is going to be faced with thousands staying out all night so get there early

Decided to go with a PowerBook instead of an iPad. For English essays, I don't think the iPad will be efficient enough. :(

Powerbook, wow thats old. I have a 12" powerbook around somewhere. They are Macbook Pros nowadays.

Yup. I would love a MacBook Pro, but that's quite a big investment. I couldn't really find a recent Apple notebook for under £800 unfortunately. I already have a late 2007 iMac, so I wasn't really looking for something to replace it.

I thought the iPad would be perfect, but worries about stock shortages and the work ergonomics of the device sorta turned me off. Anyway, the specs aren't that bad for a PowerBook. 1.67GHz processor, 512 ram (going to get an upgrade for that), 15" widescreen.

I seem to remember you will be stuck at Leopard as you cannot use Snow Leopard on a Powerbook. They are very nice build quality though.

I'm going to be sitting at work and hoping my colleagues haven't played their normal tricks and hidden any large, "fun" looking, parcels. Last time I had a delivery, I eventually found it in the printer.

Yes, well I will probably keep it at Tiger because apparently Leopard doesn't run as well on PowerBooks as well as Tiger does.

Do you think a machine like a PowerBook will be efficient enough at word processing and other tasks (e.g. surfing the web, e-mail)? Obviously I am quite weary to buy this because of it's old age, so I'm just looking for some RECENT user feedback.

Also, do you remember the screen brightness?

Thanks,

Justin

I don't have a PowerBook but I do have an eMac and an iBook G4. The iBook's screen is fine indoors but it doesn't take much natural light for the screen to get hard to see. It runs Tiger and is pretty slow, I use the eMac whenever I can as it runs Leopard and has a significantly higher spec.

I would say a PowerBook will do word processing and web browsing fine so long as you have spec of at least 1GHz G4 processor and 512 MB RAM. You might also want to take battery life into consideration as well though.

I had a PowerBook G4 15" 1.5Ghz running Leopard (I owned it since new). Leopard ran fine with the RAM maxed out (2GB), and as long as you weren't asking too much of the system. It'll word process fine, and will handle email with aplomb. The only issue with web browsing is Flash, which can be a hog on the system resources - it still runs though, but don't expect to be able to multitask.

Screen brightness? Definitely dimmer than a new machine, simply due to the backlights fading over time. Certainly usable though.

I've just logged in to my order status screen on the Apple store and it has changed and the estimated delivery is now blank, has anyone else had this?
