Again, consumption device, nothing more

the assumption being the iPhone and iPad are the exact same devices so the iOS should be identical

that's why iPad sales plummet every year

Time to sell your iPad before the price plummets again! You can get a Pixel C or a Surface Pro / Book instead, those will definitely aren't "consumption device(s)" with "sales plummet(ing) every year"

Yeah! The iPad will remain a toy until it gets a keyboard, mouse, and runs full OSX. You know, like a MacBook.

Wake up Apple, we won't stand for these non-MacBook iPads. I swear I'll go buy an Android tablet, because it's exactly like a full desktop OS!!

Then do that. Or, better yet, get a laptop or Surface Pro. The iPad is what it is. People need to stop holding their breath waiting for it to become something different. There are plenty of other products to choose from.

*Edit to add*
I understand that the comment I quoted above was meant as sarcasm, but consider my comment a response to those who sincerely have that mentality. An iPad is not a laptop. iOS is and always will be a mobile OS, not a desktop one.

Widgets in spotlight and safari side-by-side tabs as well as a redesigned camera app are the only major changes I believe (although Swift Playground is significant for those it is applicable to).

They should have focused on it a lot more given the focus on the Pro line. I would have liked functionality such as windowed overplayed apps (picture in picture) for things like calculator, drag and drop copying, finder, and smaller notification/control centres as well as improvements to the trackpad functionality as that never works when I want to copy and paste a selection.

I guess the changes will come next year when the iPads get 3D Touch....

I think we need to have a little perspective - although rich, Apple doesn't have unlimited resources. I notice they tend to focus on specific product lines over time, shifting their focus as they go along. Even for the iPhone, they have an S series cycle that normally sees less radical changes.

Apple will take it's time to update all of it's product lines / software capabilities, but their focus cannot be on everything at once.

Frankly, as an Apple Watch user, I'm really happy with the changes they've announced - of all the product lines, watchOS needed the most love.

Except for the Siri stuff (and the Watch Stuff) the keynote was a pretty big "meh" to me. The only thing that caught my attention was the horrible visual design in Apple Music, News, and Home. I'm hoping that maybe these are only preliminary and they'll actually get the Graphic Designers to take a look at it now.

As for specifics to the iPad - Honestly, I was hoping for something to get excited about, but... (A) I don't know what and (B) I didn't really have any expectations.

I'm not going to get into the productivity thing. If the iPad and iOS isn't want you wanted, there are other options - go buy them and enjoy, or use your iPad in the mode you can think of and stop complaining that it's not running OS X.

Personally? I'm pretty jazzed about Windows holographic and Android Daydream, but I'm not going to complain that iOS doesn't have VR. If those products have what I'm looking for the next time my hardware budget comes around, I'll evaluate my wants and needs and choose the appropriate device. Pretty simple.

I'm still advocating for an iPadBook dock that is virtually a Macbook base with a detachable iPad for the screen. All the more feasible now that they added the Smart Connector.

Though I guess for something like that you could just rig something up with an app like Duet, a Mac Mini, and an iPad dock.

I don't think this was a mind-blowing update, but I don't think IOS was really underwhelming to begin with. I don't see where an external mouse or trackpad would be needed? You have the trackpad in the built in keyboard, your finger or Apple Pencil is your pointer. You can absolutely have multiple Office applications open, and what is wrong with the current icons? Not going to turn this into an Android/IOS debate, but when you have your Android tablet for 1 1/2 years and have to either wait or not get the latest OS......

You cannot have the same microsoft apps open side by side...I met duplicate apps...like a Microsoft Word next to another word document. You continue to accept apple for what they give you and they will keep giving us minor updates.

It's just becoming an embarrassment to call an iPad Pro a pro device without certain features that are necessary to be deemed a pro device (mouse/trackpad support, multiple Microsoft office apps being opened, better icons that relate more to a desktop workspace, and a true file manager). Google's chrome OS chromebooks are starting to look more enticing now especially with the introduction of android apps, all we need is Samsung or some other major company to make a luxury hybrid tablet/laptop device with chrome OS to win me over.

Plus 1,000,000

Today I was expecting Apple to unleash features like above making the iPad Pro worthy of the Pro moniker.

It's such a beautiful device and powerful but Apple are keeping it as a giant iPad. Very sad indeed. I'm losing faith in Apple more then ever after today's iOS preview.

For those use cases, there's always one of the millions of Windows touch-screen laptops that are available out there :)

Or a MacBook / Air / Pro if you so desire.

Well really vote with your wallet. If people are willing to pay for "what they give" and "minor updates" good for Apple, not so good otherwise. Remember - no one forces you to buy Apple products!

I absolutely LOVED the PowerBook Duo! I loved the concept of simply sliding your portable computer into a dock that would make it a desktop.

I think the concept would be neat, but I'm afraid it would solve any of the issues people have with iOS not being "pro" enough.

With each passing year the concept becomes less and less relevant, though, with the increased focus on Cloud.

Expecting or hoping?
I get "hoping" (however unlikely) but what reason would you have to "expect" these things?

Sounds to me like your faith is based on your own assumptions.

Bit of both to be honest.

Apple should drop the Pro from the iPad as its not living up to its description. Supersize iPad is more worthy

Nope.
I challenge you to find for me anywhere that Apple has stated that a "Pro" means having a mouse and a file system.

Sure, you have your own definition of what Pro means, but Apple only has to live up to what they have said about the device and your definition of Pro doesn't have to match Apple's.

The whole consternation over the word "Pro" is stupid. It's a product name, not a promise. If Apple claimed in their introduction that the iPad Pro would eventually be able to run OS X and that's why it's called Pro, or it's called Pro because iOS 10 would add OS X features like a file system and a mouse - and THEN they didn't do it? Sure - that's a reason to get upset over crushed expectations and question your faith in the company. Apple made no such promises.

Wow your a bit of a fanboy ain't ya.

Did I mention a mouse? Did I mention a full OS?

It's a superb device that could be worthy of its pro title. Apple need to get off their lazy backsides and innovate and develop for it, it's gorgeous but so underused its criminal

Call me names if it makes you feel better, but I'm trying to point out that basing unpromised expectations on a product name may not be the smartest move when making a purchase decision.

For every thread regarding the iPad Pro not being a "pro" device:

I have not once stated Apple have promised me anything?

Simply with such a gorgeous and powerful iPad labelled as "Pro" I was hoping / expecting Apple to actually develop their new flagship iPad line. So yes I am losing faith in Apple, they are clearly developing too many products and there standards are dropping in my PERSONAL opinion.

It's sad more then anything in my opinion and I can see why iPad sales are dropping, it's not just market saturation. I think it's maybe time to checkout the opposition but I love Apple hardware and feel sad it comes to this. You kind of feel it will slowly become what the user wants but takes years and years (as demonstrated by iOS10 finally allowing to hide stock apps)

PS - I bought the iPad Pro used for a great price as a trial to see if I could do my work on the road, instead of my 12" MacBook. My qualms about the device are not about money, I'm simply frustrated because the potential in the 12" iPad is huge, the hardware is beautiful, screen is amazing. It's just annoying... and yes I should have known better that Apple would do sod all with it.

What specifically are you not able to do on a current iPad?

Well I use MS Office a lot and it's stunning to use on the iPad 12 inch. However not being able to have two windows open of the same app is crazy with the huge screen and is a huge part of my workflow.

2 word documents for example.

As I mentioned above. I have MacBooks so I'm ok and not the end of the world.

I believe today's they allowed Safari ONLY to do this - why not all apps?

I just find the hardware gorgeous but stupidly restricted in the typical Modern Apple way. It's just a bit sad more then anything about what this device could be

I really expected more than a single item from someone calling the iPad "sad" and "stupidly restricted". So why all the hate?

Err that's one example mate.

When I say sad, don't interpret that as in a sarcastic hate kind of sad. I mean I feel it's sad in terms of it being a kick arse device that is well and truly screaming and capable to be used for Professional work but held back by its OS.

As I said I grabbed this for a trial, I love so much of it but.... well can't believe they are not pushing it more.

Maybe I am jumping the gun and the betas for the Pro line will have many of these features in ios10.

PS do you own one?

The name "Pro" has never meant anything. There's no description to live up to. There's no governing body of electronics that says that a "Pro" device must have these features, and these capabilities. It's just a marketing term. Someone in Apple's marketing department realized that they could make an iPad sound like a more impressive device by adding those three letters, and it worked because evidently people bought it expecting a fundamentally different iPad.

I was expecting multiple accounts, maybe a kid mode, or a guest mode. Those are features with the other tablets. I thought Apple could copy those features this year instead of waiting.

Of course you cannot define Pro. And yeah they give the usual marketing fluff (see below) which is not realistic but could be.

The 64-bit A9X chip gives iPad Pro the power to easily take on tasks once reserved for workstations and PCs. Not to mention tasks you’d never consider doing on a PC.

iPad Pro is more capable, versatile, and portable than anything that’s come before. In a word, super.

With just a touch, swipe, or jot, you can write, email, surf, scan, render, design, redesign, and do pretty much anything you need to.
