It must be a QC issue. I can not replicate—landscape, portrait, light and dark modes, and there is no jittering or jelly effect. The scrolling is actually smoother on the 6 than it was on the 5 and especially noticeable in the kindle app. I’ve tested on websites, the kindle app, and other apps… nothing.
Any chance you could post a video? - I've never seen a 6 without this effect. Would be nice to see that it varies. :)

How in the world is this possible? I thought they had the same screen. Yikes. Maybe I should just replace the battery on my mini and call it good for a few years then.
Go check them out yourself first before making a decision. I think the new screen looks at least as good as the 5's screen, if not better - the colors, in particular, are more vibrant and brighter than before. Literally the only thing that I'd say is worse is the jelly scrolling.

On the demo I played with for a while, I thought this too….then I remembered to dial down the brightness. Just like the TV’s, the brightness is always on maximum at Best Buy

I honestly found the quality identical to the Mini 5 (I brought mine with me)

Ok, hopefully I’ve captured these videos accurately. I still can’t see any jittering or jelly effects—let me know if you see otherwise.

Best Buy exchanged mine 3 times. The last two were opened and tested while I was in the store. They all had it. I decided to get a refund instead. I figured that they all came from the same batch, so if one had the problem, all would have it.

Strangely, the display Mini 6 at Best Buy did NOT have this problem when scrolling through text. :(

@beach bum

First and second videos.
Can’t miss it (well…I can’t miss it)

Honestly I’d just be happy you cant see it!
The first and second videos I could only watch for a second while I was recording… SMH, I got a severe case of motion sickness. I still feel off even minutes later. If you say that you can see the jelly effect, I am VERY happy that I can’t.

And not one “YouTube Reviewer/Influencer” said anything about it. So either they got PERFECT units that were designed differently, or more likely, spent more time on their video production than actually testing the darn things. I hope people now see most of them for what they really are.

I honestly miss the days before “influencer” was a thing. We got actual, honest reviews from people who actually cared about good tech.

Or, its really just not a big thing. I laugh at all the videos here trying to show its an issue by rapidly rolling the screen up and down.. a) I just dont see it, but b) eh even if so.. I tend to read a LOT slower than that. really just not an issue at all. but yep, I did check my own iPad 6 and frantically scrolled up and down. all I saw was a lot of scrolling I couldn't read. shrugs.

This is a fundamental characteristic of LCD displays (OLED has it too). It exists on all of them whether you notice it or not. It’s noticeable here simply because the display refreshes vertically instead of horizontally in portrait mode. Why they changed the display orientation is beyond me. It’s harder to tell on high refresh rate displays but again, it’s still there. Apple will not issue a fix as it would be extremely difficult to fix through software. If you can’t tolerate it return the device, as it’s not going away.
Pay attention to what this poster says: these are the facts of the situation.

It is not software, it is not because Tim Cook is sad, it is not a "bad batch."

honestly even the ‘top of the food chain influencers’ are beholden to "access" and thus always biased; it’s especially true with MKBHD!

maybe I'm just too old to be "influenced" by those people? I but whatever phone I want... test them out myself... if I like them, I keep them... if not, I return them and move on. I am no fanboy to nobody. I have Android phones and iPhones, as well as Samsung Galaxy S7+ tablet and iPads. I don't believe in staying with one eco-system. I buy whatever works and fits my needs at that particular time.

unless "influencers" like iJunstine or other hot female ones start giving out free lap dances, I am unlikely to be "influenced"....

This article is a good example of how poor the comments have become on the MacRumors forums.

For comparison, have a look at the comments on the Ars Technica article on this same subject.

The contrast between the reactionary hot takes here and the informed analysis at Ars Technica is like night and day.

I’m not sure what you’re getting at.
We have come to the same conclusion here.

This has always been a thing to varying degrees, but it is now much more pronounced due to the panel orientation change

Looking at my iPad mini 5 and it does the same thing but in landscape mode. A previous commenter is right. It is just the nature of the displays. What causes it to happen in the different orientations depends on what Is the physical top and bottom of the display. Honestly this is a natural behavior of LCD displays. I even see it on my 2018 iPad Pro with 120hz refresh rate in portrait orientation. So this is much to do about nothing, almost all lcd displays do this.

I played with the display purple Mini 6 in Best Buy today and saw this effect easily. I thought the unit was defective because of too much handling as a display model. I’ve been traveling since Friday so wasn’t aware of this jelly effect issue. Now I‘m seeing that this is more than just a defective store demo device.

I was already starting to reflect on whether or not I really needed the new Mini based on what I have currently with the iPP 11” and now the 13 Pro Max. Looks like I’ll be in “wait and see” mode.

Yeah, in the first two vids, the jelly effect is very obvious, unfortunately :( :(
If i read on my device, my eyes just going to be tired really fast and everything is tilted.

Anyone remember when Steve was in charge and you genuinely thought he wanted the best experience for users, instead of penny-pinching Timothy....
Except … every iPad under Steve Jobs had exactly this. ;)

I've noticed jelly scrolling on every single iPad I've owned (until ProMotion). I always wondered why nobody else was bothered by it. I guess there just needs to be enough hype for people to complain. ;)

Anyway, it's mostly fine. While I've always checked every new iPad for this effect, I usually forgot about it after a week. After that I've only ever noticed it negatively when scrolling fast through tabular pages.

(But if I remember correctly, previous iPads had the effect in landscape not portrait.)

Since some have mentioned similar behavior on previous iPad models, I checked mine and even did the slo-mo test in both screen orientations - nothing. The only thing that can be seen is the 60 hz-typical jumps, but equally and simultaneously across the screens.
I strongly suspect this being related to Apple trying to bring BOE on board and now it feels like they have managed it, as the panels clearly do not offer the same quality. I have compared my previous-gen mini with the new one and the new one's colors are so washed out with the jelly issue being unnecessarily being added on top it is ridiculous.

Have an iPad Pro for comparison I noticed it right away. When I show others they see it too. I can look past it and when needed see it. It’s most easily seen with black text on a white background. I’m keeping the iPad mini and thought it was simply the difference in 60 vs 120Hz but if there is a fix for the effect I’m happy to apply that.

Interesting its a portrait mode issue. I never thought to try landscape for comparison My pro basically lives in landscape but my mini is mostly held portrait.

Has nothing to do with 60hz and 120hz. Previous iPad displays are 60hz and never had this problem. In fact, no Apple device has ever had this problem.
