-.- #%$^&%$&$& I was planning on getting one but if that's the 8gb wifi only they can keep it. Tax and all where I live it will end up being around 370$! I thought it was gonna be 250-300.. O well not really a tablet person anyway

I was hoping for $299 but 40 extra dollars isn't that big a deal. I just won't buy a lightning to 30 pin adapter with it and that will make up for most of the difference.

I've been waiting for this year to finally buy my first tablet. I'm not rich and so cost is key. I've been eyeing iPads for a long time now and really like them. However, they have always been out of my price range. Now that the Nexus 7 is out for $249 with 16GB, I'm really torn. Its not like before when Android tablets were essentially crap. The hardware has gotten better and the OS has gotten much better. Not really Apple "quality," but certainly much more competitive. Its not nearly the compromise it used to be.

If iPad sells for $299, has good build quality, a fair rear-facing camera and a good chip, I can easily justify the extra $50. For an extra $70? That's kinda pushing it. Especially for a device I will probably want to replace in about 3 years. $30 more can buy me lots of software or a nice case.

If other rumors are true that Google will increase the $199 Neuxs 7 to 16GB, then the iPad would need to be $249 with 16GB for me to consider it. I'm hoping for some good news by this holiday season.

If it starts at 329, that sound you hear is Apple shooting itself in the foot, and the stock that's been in a freefall for weeks will continue to crater.

If the sales are as strong as I expect, the stock will soar since Apple will have protected its margins. I bet this will sellout worldwide and there will be severe stock shortages through until January after the holiday shopping season.

LOL. No joke, I just read the article title, said out loud, "what are they high?," then came on here to reply to your first post.

Wow, they *are* high. Was going to get in on the mini, after having the original iPad, and finding it a bit too large for me. Wanted to get in on the mini, not now I won't.

I think, maybe it's time for Apple to lower the price of iPod Touch to $229 or $249 and start iPad Mini from $299 16GB and $399 for 32GB. The iPod Touch is little over priced IMO.

iPod Shuffle $49
iPod Nano $149
iPod Touch $229 or $249
iPad Mini $299
New iPad $499

This price range works well, if they're announcing iPad Mini.

Edit: I don't see why people are crying about $329 price because iPod Touch currently go for $299 which is pretty expensive if you compare it to $329 for a 7' tablet? If anything they need to cut the price of iPod Touch more in order to make room for iPad Mini's price to be lower..otherwise it won't make sense! but knowing Apple, that will never happen.

!

One can purchase a 16 GB iPod touch for $199 now (last gen, but still retina). Apple has nothing iOS at 8 GB except the free iPhone 4

I haven't backread the entire thread, but has anyone thought of the fact that every Apple product has a starting price of $X49 or $X99? Look at store.apple.com; a listing for iPad Air from $329 would be out of place. One of these things is not like the other. Very un-Apple.

I agree about 8GB not being enough, but I'm not understanding all the comparisons to 7" tablets, including the Nexus. If Apple's using a display that's 40% larger, I suspect the difference in UX will be pretty significant; like the difference between a blown up smartphone and a small tablet; especially when you factor in the iPad optimized apps.
I compared it to the Nexus 7 mostly because it was the first tablet that come to mind. I was looking at it in a shop recently. Also Google, like Apple, has a good website so I could quickly get the prices and specs.

I do expect the iPad mini to be more than the Nexus 7, just not much more. The iPad mini is rumoured to have a 7.85" v 7" screen. Although it seems the Nexus will have more pixels 1280x800 v 1024x768.

Because screens have two dimensions, not one:

7" at 16:9 = 6.1 x 3.43"
Area = 20.923"^2

7.8" at 4:3 = 6.23 x 4.69"
Area = 29.2187"^2

29.2187/20.923 = x/100
20.923x = 2921.87
x = 139.6487

Thus the latter has about 40% more area.
I was also about to make a post about aspect ratio and screen size, but you beat me to it. One small correct, Nexus 7 has a 1280x800 screen so a 16:10 not 16:9 screen ratio.
By my calculations
iPad mini
7.85" @ 4:3 = 29.6 sq in
Nexus 7
7" @ 16:10 = 22 sq in

29.6/22 =1.34545..

So 35% larger, but the Nexus 7 does have more pixels in both dimensions.

I think it's going to be >8GB. Just 8GB wouldn't make sense, considering the other Apple products' storage options. The iPhone 5 starts at 16GB, the iPod touch at 32GB, and the iPad at 16GB.

Has Apple ever priced hardware with a trailing $29?

I'd guess the price is $299

Mac OS X (Mountain) Lion: $29

Never have I read so much bit.ching and moaning since I've been on macrumors.
The thing about the iPad mini is that it's something YOU DON'T ACTUALLY NEED!!!!
If its too much for you then don't buy it. It's a very simple thing!!

"OMG I was gonna get 1 but now that it's 30 dollars more than I expected then I just can't get it!!

"Apple is doomed for charging 30 dollars more than what I wanted to pay"

If 30 dollars is making you rethink a purchase that you thought was gonna cost 300, then you probably shouldn't be spending 300 dollars on a gadget that you don't need BUT want!!

Anyway Apple hasn't even announced the price yet and I actually think 329 is a great starting price for a 8 inch iPad!!

it's such a bad decision if it would be true. who will buy this piece of **** for $329? apple can't compete with 7 inch tablet with this price tag. impossible. apple has lost slowly their mind. they think that they still do fine. but NO.

I'll stay with what I got...

I'd just be echoing everyone else by saying the starting price is too high, but really, anyone who's ever bought a refurb from the Apple site knows that is the way to go. When the ipad 3 came out, I went in and got a great deal on an ipad 2 with 3g. It is my first tablet and I use it constantly from netflix, youtube, browsing, paying bills, email, and on Saturdays... I watch football with watchESPN. With the ipad mini pricing at that point, people are better off getting a refurb 2 or 3 and maximizing that screen space. IMO. But... to each his own.

299 and I would've bought two; one for me, one for my parents. 329 and I'll pass. Makes no sense? I don't care.

so for an extra $30 you wouldn't buy it?!? you're an idiot

its nice seeing how everyone on this forum is a Marketing Expert. Apple sure is lucky to have so many experts to "help them" with their marketing and product launch strategies.

so expensive for a tiny tablet. i'd rather buy the new Nexus 7 32GB for $249.

Smart move.

I have had an iPad 3 for about 6 months.

I just got a NEXUS 7 an I have to say : It is WAY better ! May not be as fast, but it's fats enough. It runs smooth and I can do a bunch of stuff I could never do (And will never be able to do with iOS) with iPad .

NEXUS 7 FTW !
