So $329 is the going price for Unicorns these days, eh? I'll still pick up 3 of them for Xmas gifts if these imaginary beasts are indeed unveiled on Tuesday.

Still all speculation. Waaay to many hardened decisions made by people here off of unofficially announced price points.

....anyway , my fictionally ideal mini iPad would:
1. Be just large enough to squeezes into my pocket. No more than 6" wide x 8" tall.
2. Wifi + Cell would mean phone plan, not just data.

If it does those 2 things, price becomes irrelevant. Simply because a product is available that essentially eliminated the need for me to have an iPhone + an iPad .

  • Apple expects to sell 10 million (based on the rumored inventory orders)
  • The starting price will be $329.

Pick one.

Well after scrolling through 500+ posts to this thread, I decided to RTFA. The key bits of information you need to see this massive pile of BS for what it is, is:

It is possible that this base price for the smaller iPad could be higher, but our best guess is $329.......

When placed in Apple’s current pricing matrix of its iOS devices, a starting price of $329 makes sense. The new iPod touch will continue to be cheaper than Apple’s new tablet, while the smaller iPad’s pricing will also be nicely spaced under and between the new full-sized iPads.........

We created the likely pricing matrix for the smaller iPad shown above.

In other words, these numbers are nothing more than BGR's speculation.

Was checking out a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 yesterday. Was going to buy it and said to myself, wait the ipad mini is coming out next week. I know they'll price it right, maybe i'll hold off.

Guess I'm going back to best buy today to pick up the tab.

Sometimes Apple just sucks.

I guess it means 399 EUR (519 USD) for the entry model in Europe, no thanks.

So wait...

Why is it that $30 is making or breaking people's buying decision already, according to these posts? We don't know what the resolution, the storage, the RAM or the processor will be in this thing, for starters, or if it'll have a special feature devoted to it (a la the iPod Nano's differences from the iPod Classic when iPods were all the rage).

I'm personally considering one because I'm finding that I mostly use my iPad 2 for reading, watching some videos and playing games (none of which requires a full-sized keyboard on the screen), and having a lighter, smaller product with a Retina Display (fingers crossed) would be perfect. That doesn't mean I'm making my decision before it's even announced!

Oh tell me oh wise poster complaining about the 8gb, where in the post does it mention such a thing. Bunch of whiners is all this site is getting these days. "If it was 299 I'd get it no issue, but 329? No way!" Really? $30? It must be so hard for you where a $300 warrants no second guessing but 329 automatically is way too much.

So glad to here people make definitive purchasing decisions based off of rumors when the event is only 3 days away. Pathetic.

It is a bit disappointing if these prices are true. I'm another person who'd consider an iPad mini if the price was right for me. I still love my iPad 1, but I'm less keen on spending on a full iPad again until I see how long they support the iPad 2 and '3rd generation' iPads, because the lack of continued support for the original iPad already is inexcusable. I'm not paying full iPad money again for less than 2 years of at least basic maintenance support/updates. It's not as if my iPad is going to stop working in many ways, but if basic web browsing isn't as secure as the more recent models after only 2 years, that's a bit shambolic.

I actually deposited a load of loose change I'd built up over a couple of years or so this week and it looked like a very iPad mini-esque amount to me! I'm so sure now. Might get a Paperwhite instead, iBooks is a bit of a sad joke as it stands today, and is in desperate need of a re-vamp (and an official desktop reader at the very minimum) if Apple doesn't want it to be completely killed by Amazon.

I'm hoping this pricelist is a controlled leak to manage expectations. If everyone in this thread who has said they'd buy it if it were $30 cheaper actually did so, Apple will have a huge hit on their hands, again.

Other than that there is of course one (abbreviated) word that everyone could consider: REFURBS!

Apple are not gonna put out a zero margin product. Especially not one that will so obviously steal a ton lot of sales from their lucrative 9.7" iPad line.

True. But if they can't put out one single 7" model that has a teaser/competitive price point, why get in the game at all? Apple could easily continue to push the 10" screen is a superior experience line, and no one does that better than iOS.

The iPad 2 is $399. It just doesn't seem to make much sense that a 7" would only get a $70 price chop in a world where consumers ARE comparing it to the Nexus 7 and where Android tablet is coming to par with iOS. $329 doesn't seem like a price that is going to move all the rumored 10m made for the holiday season. It will sell, but it's not going to leave mouths gaping at that price. It's not 2009.

And as for product cannibalization, there are plenty of bumping prices in Apple's lines. You can get a 13" Air or MBP for $1199. You can get an iPod touch or an iPad 2 for $399.

Why would you rush back to BB when nothing official comes for two days? I don't like the $329 price either, but this is Mac Rumors, not Mac Facts.

Why would anyone want a tablet with only 8GB of storage?

I don't know where this rumor comes from. I don't see any reason why Apple would offer the iPad "mini" with less storage than the regular iPad. Smaller form factor doesn't mean people need less storage space.... it runs the same apps.

The only reason for them to have an 8GB model is to keep the cost down. I really think the $300+ price point is too much, but of course people will still buy it. It might just be too "premium" especially in this low cost tablet market. Apple usually doesn't compete in the "cheaper" markets, but it seems like this time they will.

I really don't believe this. Apple's way is going higher on price to make a relevant distinction but not too high to be able to sell. $299 is a good price. $100 more than the regular tablets of 7 inches out there. $100 Apple tx is good for the brand. $329 plus taxes it will be more or less $400 and you can get an iPad 2 with that price. Even if they discontinued the iPad 2 just to push you the mini you will find ipad 2 on ebay cheaper than that.

Oh Steve ... "it is inevitable" as Mr. Smith said to Neo inside the Matrix.

the end is near.

Zero margin and apple lol!!! If only you knew how faaaaaaaaaar apple device prices were from zero margin. Cheers for the morning giggle :)

8GB->16GB costs about $6 more in parts. Why would Apple draw negative attention to the product by making it under performing and over priced?

I forgot. Apple hates its customers.

A larger screen with a lower resolution than the competition. I can see individual pixels AND more space! Go :apple:

Resolution is only one aspect of screen quality. We can't possibly be sure how good the screen will be without seeing it but we can see it will be far larger than those on competing tablets.

The iPad mini may use in cell touch tech which would greatly improve colour saturation and reduce reflectivity for one thing.

The Nexus 7 has been criticised for having a fairly poor display. On paper it looks good but if you read the write up from Displaymate the true story is very different with poor factory calibration being the most likely cause.

As for being able to see individual pixels - none of the seven inch tablets have retina resolution screens so you can apply that criticism to all of them.

I think it's very possible, even likely, that the iPad mini's display will be superior to that of competing, smaller tablet displays. Larger, better calibrated and with better calibration.

We also understand the iPad mini will carry a back facing camera, something missing from both the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire.

As I said, add the likely better and certainly larger display to the vastly superior ecosystem and this premium is entirely reasonable. That doesn't even count any other aspects of the specification that we don't yet know about.

you do realize the galaxy tab 2 is an over-priced and poorly rated device?

I guess you dont..since you really think samsung makes useable tablets at all.

Wow that's a bummer, I'm trying to decide whether to spend 119 for a kindle paperwhite or 329 for an iPad mini :(

The iPad mini is more versatile but the kindle is much cheaper and the primary usage will be reading.
