It's loads of fun watching people lose their minds over what some guy "thinks" the price of the iPad mini will be.:)

He he, yes, amazing what a rumor can do.

What I do not understand is that the iPad2 is responsable for over 40% of all iPad sales atm, for many (me included) it is the better iPad, longer battery, lighter, thinner, cooler and a lot cheaper.

It retails for 399.

Now the rumor proposes the identical iPad but smaller. Even with the same specs, same performance, same apps ect it would be a bargain at 329. Where is the Problem? The screen would be sharper, better DPI, it would be lighter AND cheaper.

What else do they want?

It's 30 bucks. Quit crying about it. If you can afford 300 you can afford 330.

It has very little to do with affordability. Most consumers have normal human irrationalities, and a huge percentage will stop buying just above certain magical numbers. This is a well known effect in retail marketing.

Like Steve said "dead on arrival" ... for $329 starting price that is... there will be no stupid people enough to buy this and keep their profit margins ...

There are plenty of stupid people left to pay whatever price Apple or any other company sets on a product despite its worth vs. value. Take Mercedes for example. ^^

Flipside is that most Americans are image conscious hence why Acura Infiniti Lexus were created.

Companies make poor business decision ALL THE TIME. Look what Apple was doing before Steve Jobs took over. Sometimes people really do know more than the all mighty corporations.

Steve Jobs has his share of bad decisions. He strongly resisted the idea of opening an App market and letting other developers in. Finally one engineer in Apple was adamant and finally Steve gave in.

Imagine if the iPhone was just another fancy phone where you could only download wallpapers and ringtones from AT&T.

good point.
If they deliver decent specs- I'll pay a bit more for the device.

I'm sorry I haven't read through the 14+ pages of responses, but I think this really gets to the heart of the matter.

Even if we assume that the prices are accurate, we still don't know the specs. Apple has a long history of charging premium prices. But they have also delivered a premium product for those prices.

You can find Windows based personal computers for a lot less than you can get a Mac, but the specs will be a lot less also.

Personally, I have to wonder if Apple will even bother to offer a 16GB any more. Apple already discontinued the 16GB in the latest generation of the iPod Touch. I don't thin it is unreasonable to think that Apple may move to 32GB, 64GB and 128GB options in the iPad line.

Apple Insider is saying the price will be $299.

Not a bad idea...so they can justify the higher price.

This type of conspicuous consumer will buy a new iPhone (preferably newer than most other people have) to flaunt their image in public. There are far fewer opportunities to show off a iPad in public, and when there are, a big iPad might be better.

Didn't Steve like to say that Apple had a bigger share of the worldwide PC market than the Mercedes and BMW labels put together in the auto market?

Mid-premium (e.g. not Bugatti), plus a bit more. It's where the profits are. Let GM sell more cars (and occasionally go bankrupt doing so).

It's still ONLY 30 dollars. It's just so ironic to me that people here kill themselves over justifying the apple price tag yet can't fork over an extra thirty dollars for what should be an entirely new product line (well kind of).

How so?

The Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD have weak ecosystem and build quality compared to an iPad. I also always hear about how laggy they are.

The screen on the iPad mini will also be 40% bigger than a 16:9 7" tablet, placing it in-between them and a full-size iPad.

You also have to compare pricing of equivalent capacity. A 16GB Nexus 7 is $250, only $79 less.

the last part will prob change by next week...

rumor is that the 16gb nexus will be 199.99 soo its going to get fun!!!!!!

----------

The $250 Nexus is plastic, has a 30% smaller screen, and sells for no profit.

Add 20% for bigger screen/battery/metal case = + $40
-----------------------------------------

That is $290 before profit.

Add minimum $20% for profit = +$58

That is $348 with profit.

So $329 is actually less than I would expect.

apple will sale less then it expects as well. LOL

I really shouldn't but I will anyway :p point out I have seen identical specs as the 13" MBP for around $500. Basically the i5 processor and usually a larger hard drive, the build quality isn't obviously as good but some are quite decent and the webcam's are usually lower quality, stuff like that.

Since a Windows machine hasn't had it's "retina" display machine released yet, you can look at the normal 15" MBP vs the competition. I usually see the exact same stuff for $800-$1000 bucks. Usually the only thing again is it isn't built as sturdy, but backlit keyboards, more RAM, more hard drive space is always a given.

Apple can make the extra profit though and the consumers dont care so I dont blame them one bit. I still stand behind they should raise prices on their users even more.

Will the iPad Mini have the same resolution as the iPhone 4 and not be retina? That would allow apps to natively run w/o any redesign.

Yes, people behave in ironic manners. Some will complain about, or won't even fork over 99 cents for a useful and non-trivial utility app or game.

Anything above $299 for an entry level is too high. If this is the case... it's a missed opportunity imo.

I completely agree. If Apple can't get it under $300, then why do it?

I've never used a Kindle or a Nexus tablet, but if this rumored price turns out to be true, I think the amazon and Samsung people have nothing to fear.

If you take an iPad and hold it upright in portrait view and draw an imaginary horizontal line halfway down the screen, the screens on the seven-inch tablets are a bit smaller than the bottom half of the iPad display. This size isn't sufficient to create great tablet apps in our opinion.

Well, one could increase the resolution of the display to make up for some of the difference. It is meaningless, unless your tablet also includes sandpaper, so that the user can sand down their fingers to around one quarter of the present size. Apple's done extensive user-testing on touch interfaces over many years, and we really understand this stuff. There are clear limits of how close you can physically place elements on a touch screen before users cannot reliably tap, flick, or pinch them. This is one of the key reasons we think the 10-inch screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps.

Third, every tablet user is also a smartphone user. No tablet can compete with the mobility of a smartphone, its ease of fitting into your pocket or purse, its unobtrusiveness when used in a crowd. Given that all tablet users will already have a smartphone in their pockets, giving up precious display area to fit a tablet in our pockets is clearly the wrong trade-off. The 7-inch tablets are tweeners, too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with an iPad.

These are among the reasons we think the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA, dead on arrival. Their manufacturers will learn the painful lesson that their tablets are too small and increase the size next year, thereby abandoning both customers and developers who jumped on the 7-inch bandwagon with an orphan product. Sounds like lots of fun ahead.

Totally agree ! Best post ever !!
