You are mistaken. The $199 8GB nexus 7 sells for no profit.

The $249 16GB nexus 7 makes a profit for both google and the store/retailer. Do you really think 8GB of flash storage is $50 ?

But I understand the 16GB and up models don't sell.

$330 or so isn't actually too bad. It's good quality and only costs $200 more than what my garbage MID tablet cost. I wonder what the storage capacities will be.

Problem is earlier rumors were predicting basically a shrunken iPad 2. So you take that with a $329 price tag and people say "no thanks". Though I don't remember seeing any credible rumors of iPad 2 specs, just guesses from John Gruber and the like.

It won't be retina, and there won't be much reason to swap your iPad 2. It is essentially a mini iPad 2 for a lower price (the iPad 2 will be dropped).

But it will have a 163 dpi screen instead of 132 on on the iPad 2, which is a little bonus, and it might have an A6 processor, which would be a lot more powerful than the iPad 2 A5 processor(and any other ARM tablet).

Thats that gruber talk assuming they use 3GS sheets. Why would apple do that they are smart enough to predict 3GS demand and why would apple use leftover components. That sounds like a samsung move. Yeah its a good business decision but I would predict better than 163... Hopefully....

Will it fit in your pocket?...that's all I want to know

If yes I will buy, if not I see no reason to shift from full size iPad

...apple really needs to trim down the black border on both iPad and mini... just a tad.

Well, if this pricing is true I have a dilemma. I was planning on getting 2 of these for my kids if the price was below $300. My wife yesterday comes to me out of the blue and says she wants her own full-size iPad, not a mini. SHOCKED beyond belief, because until we got our iPhones she was not interested in any kind of high-tech device. So, my plan was to get 2 minis and 1 iPad 3, and I keep my curt iPad 2. However, at $330, I am rethinking the plan. On 2 minis at $330 with taxes, accessories, etc. I am looking at $750-800 for gifts for elementary school-age kids. Now I am thinking I should get 2 iPad 3s, one for my wife and one for me, and the kids can have my iPad 2. I'd be happy, my wife would be happy, and the kids don't matter. ;)

I think it needs to be around $250 to be competitive. At $329 (and likely $349 in Canada) I know I'll have to think harder about getting one.

Over $300 is too much.

At $329 Apple will sell millions a year... but maybe more like 10 million rather than 25-30+. The lost sales will go to Google and Amazon.

I hope this is a bogus price, like the $999 price was when the iPad was introduced.

High. I use the iPad all the time but only because the size hits a sweet spot.

The mini would be niche.

But then again, I would be tempted to try it, if not just for the Wow factor.

appreciate it if anyone could help me here. if the price of the mini is 329 dollars how much will that be in ireland/euro? is it a straight euro/dollar conversion or will it be 329 euro? whats the price dif normally?

Do you have an 8" pocket?

...actually I don't wear oversize cargo pants etc.. Just avg dress pants. and those pockets are 10" deep and about 6" wide.... I can shove a CD case in a pocket, even though that's awkward

It will be extremely difficult to fit in your pocket if its 7.85". I can do it with my Nexus 7 but your really pushing it with almost 8 inches. The same people here complain about 4.5" phones fitting into pockets. I don't see this tablet fitting into pockets.

It isn't left over 3GS parts. That is just a loony idea. Rumors are that Sharp/AOU are building the screens and they didn't build 3GS screens, so they can't have anything left over.

163 DPI is good enough for most people. Heck millions of people are still buying iPad 2 with 132 dpi screens.

The good business decision will be 1024x768 so all the iPad software works perfectly. That resolution at 7.85 gets you 163 dpi. If it is a new resolution it will end up with ugly scaled software until new software is developed.

Thats a good plan. An ipad 2 for elementary aged kids is a damn nice present

... guess ill just wait & see what comes on the 23rd. Fitting in a pocket would give it an extreme edge over the iPad for me..... portability takes on a whole new edge

Apple does NOT understand how to price a product that nobody needs.

Apple, you just lost my sale for the iPad Mini! I will NOT be purchasing this product!

Good luck selling them to some sucker out there who will buy one, but I can guarantee you that I will NOT. i'm just fine with my iPad 3, thankyouverymuch.

Ironically enough, Apple, if you would have priced this product appropriately (like $199 or $249), I would have snapped one up for guests to use in the living room.

But at these prices, you have completely lost both my sale AND my interest. Yet you could have had BOTH my sale AND my interest if you would have priced these appropriately, at $199 or a MAXIMUM price of $249.

Good luck, though... I'm sure some sucker out there will plunk down $329 for this unnecessary object.

Maybe the iPad 3 owner isn't the target customer.

Yeah but then the tech journalists will just proclaim how the iPad Mini screen sucks and is way overpriced, when you consider the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD have 216 ppi.
I think we can be confident it will have a retina screen.

Apple can charge whatever it wants for this. Apples are premium products, and if they wanted to charge $400, then this would sell off quickly like pancakes.
