I don't really see anything particularly negative about those projections. I would expect those who really want the iPad when it launches to pre-order it--and to do it as soon as pre-orders are available. Some on the fence will pre-order this month, and the rest are going to wait until they see it--or wait until the bugs are worked out after launch. LOL--it took me until 3GS to get an iPhone--but I've liked the product since launch.

Numbers would have been better if Apple allowed reservations on the 3G one. I am one of those people waiting around till who knows when to reserve a 3G one. My luck, it will be end of April ... last day of month. Blah.

The thing about the whole "just wait till people start seeing them", is that this is still, for all intents and purposes, just a big iPod touch.

I do think that the lack of a 3G version right now has hurt presales, but I don't see it doubling the numbers once it's out.

7-8 million this year is laughable. Not a chance. 2 million by years end if they're lucky. 1000 an hour is NOT a sustainable number.

I'll see your Barney Fanny, and raise you 3 LaLaPelosis...

10 million iPad unit sales before Jan 1 2011!

I never understood the "magical" sales theme. It works for Disney, but this is a piece of technology. I'm really looking forward to the iPad, but I think this is a bad sales message.

That's why I made the joke. It's one thing to say it in the presentation, but I was really surprised that it's in print on the website (and it has become a running joke with a lot of the IT people I deal with daily). It almost seems like they are trying too hard and have gone way over the top. I hope we don't look back one day and see 'magical' as a jump the shark moment for Apple.

I want an iPad for sure, but NOT the first generation, for sure too. :) I'm guessing that lots of others feel the same as me and are not willing to shell out for totally new, unproven and untested (at least in real use) technology. It's only a happy coincidence that I'm a Canuck and will have to wait months anyway..

Rich

I am a first-generation iphone user (still, and not going to change it for its new plastic counterpart). I am just excited by the idea of being an early adopter of some new, unproven and untested Apple technology.

You are welcome to wait 1 more year (who knows) before buying like the rest of the ‘sheeps’. If everyone reasoned like you Apple were already out of business.

What is untested in the iPad?

Other than the A4, its pretty much a bigger iphone hardware wise. I think apple has gotten pretty good at making those usable.

Shows how little the cynicism of fanboys and tech nerds actually means :p

I know! When they sell a million units, it's going to be a laugh to go back to the iPad launch forum and see all the fanboys who tried to tell us all that the iPad would be a flop and they defy anyone to say something good about it.

A bit like Jim Allchin, I would buy an iPad today, if Apple let me.

Just wait until you see Disney owned Marvel Comics come to iPad - I think it's going to be quite the magical thing for comic books.

Even the A4 is essentially a spruced up version of the same chip in the iPhone 3GS.

The iPad is truly one of the more tested first gen products you're ever going to see. It's basically a large iPod Touch, and they've been making those for years now. I see no reason to fear the iPad's first gen incarnation for quality reasons.

No offense, but you don't really have the qualifications to make the underlined statement, no one does here at this point.

As for the rest, spot on, exactly what I was getting at.

In what way did the iPad exceed your expectations? For a product that took so long to develop, it is a large iPod touch. It's supposed to be the ultimate websurfing device but it can't do standards like Flash.

Just saying. People crapped their pants when AppleTV was annouced but I knew that wouldn't catch on.

This product isn't a "neccesity" like a cellphone is or a notebook is. If I'm going to carry another big device around besides my cell, I would want a real keyboard, a strong CPU, multitasking, etc.

Anyone bothered to read the article, and actually look at that graph? WTF is it even showing?

What's the difference between an iPad "order" and an iPad "sale"? Maybe an iPad order is one submitted purchase, possibly for multiple iPads. iPad sales show the actual number of iPad units being sold. IF this is the case, however, where is he getting average of 1.125 iPads per order? If you look at the data in the graph, it seems a lot less than 1.125 (the iPad sales line is not 12.5% higher than the iPad orders line).

Why is there no data for the first 10 hours post launch. Nobody placed an order for 10 hours (clearly not true)?

A quote from the article:
Tello's estimates are based on 120 orders for 137 iPads over 58 hours, starting at 8:30 a.m. ET Friday.

He is speculating the 1 million order figure on data consisting of only 120 orders and 137 iPad sales?

Ruahrc

Sounds like you aren't in the market for a tablet device then. Other are. You understand this right?

Not everybody who wants the iPad is ordering from Apple

I am going to buy the iPad but I am waiting to buy it from MacConnection to save the sales tax and they are not carrying it yet. They told me it will be selling on April 3rd.

Even if Macconnection is selling the WiFi unit, I am going to wait to buy the 3G unit. With the ease of turning 3G on and off without a contract, why would you not get the 3G unit instead of the WiFi unit which ties you down to a hot spot.

The iPad is a new device in a beautiful form factor with a large touchscreen. Anybody that writes that his/her laptop will do, misses the whole point of this device.

Are you watching TV in your family room with the laptop plugged in on your lap all the time? How easy is it to have the iPad in your hand to get some information you are seeking?

I use the iPhone that way all the time but having the iPad for that role will be nirvana.

I cannot wait until I get my iPad.

This has been brought up before, but have you ever read about how national television ratings (Nielsens) are calculated?

It's enough to make you cry.

Those are pretty good numbers considering there's no camera. THERE'S NO CAMERA.

I really don't think a Camera is needed on a device like this. Only camera I can see that would be nice would be a front facing camera. But a camera for pictures would just be silly. Not sure what your thoughts for a camera on it are.

I was one of the orders in the first 30 minutes :p

Same here. I would have been in the first 5 minutes but I was debating...and finally said screw it and ordered it.

What if Steve Jobs and his friends at Disney have secretly cooked up something magical for the iPad together?

Disney magic + Apple magic in one device. Let's not forget that Steve Jobs is the largest individual shareholder in Disney and member of the Disney board.

Just saying ... :)

QFT. It's pretty depressing that so many great shows are canned based on a small sample of the total audience's tastes.

Yeah. I feel dirty even bringing it up as a counterpoint, because all I can think is "...and hence, we have American Idol and four thousand CSI spinoffs."

in other news:

February Mac sales up 43%, Apple on track for 2.9M in quarter

New retail sales data shows Apple has continued to have strong Mac and iPod sales at the start of 2010, with February's numbers showing significant year-over-year growth.

like i said before, the dip in iPhone sales is offset by the increase in iPod sales and this article confirms it.

people satisfied with their cell phones are buying iPod's instead.

Can't wait to see the numbers when the people who didn't pre-order buy theirs when they actually arrive in store. I'm buying a 3G iPad the day they go on sale like thousands and thousands of others.

Exactly. I don't know which one will sell the best but basing any kind of sales estimates solely on the wifi only iPad seems short sighted.
