Why does the 9.7" model not have usb3 speeds? Why the step back?

Was all commited to purchase as well, and they just killed it. Ridiculous.

Well there are no specific USB 3.0 devices anyway that this iPad Pro will support. I have the IPP LTE model and yet to even be able to charge faster. But they have announced the new USB-C Lightning cables and a breakout USB box for all sorts of USB 3.0 devices. Can't wait!

There would be if it was jailbroken.

And even aside from that, just syncing with a pc would be so much faster, restoring is horrible with usb2, it takes forever.

Wifi should not be faster than wired, and yet it is...its fine if they want to keep it that way yet again, but I won't buy another usb2 tablet.

Who thought it was a good idea to release a 256gb version with no way to load that much data on it in a reasonable time.

I was honestly not expecting the smaller iPad Pro to be better than the larger one. It has a better camera, better display, always on "Hey Siri", a much better camera, and I can get LTE with the base storage model.

Pretty sure I'll be picking one of these up in the next month or so.

9.7 pro, according to apple's own comparison chart, has lower spec'd cpu and graphics than the 12.9.

the 12.9 pro benchmarks barely faster than the air 2 as it is (thanks to the air 2 tri-core), so that means the 9.7 pro is probably going to be one of weakest cpu/graphics updates of all the iPads. i wouldn't be jealous of it as a 12.9 owner.

So you would pull the plug on the iPP 9.7 purchase on account of this?

Somehow I don't believe you.

No need to believe me, I already have. I can't believe Apple has done such a thing, both disappointed and annoyed. The best way I know how I can show that is by removing at least one guaranteed purchase that they just struck away. I will definitely not be handing over my money if they can't even be bothered to update 16 year old technology, or better yet, keep the updated technology in this so called 'pro' tablet.

I will not purchase another usb2 tablet. At best it might push me towards the 12.9", but at this rate it looks like I'm waiting another 6-12 months. I had every intention of getting the 256gb version, but that would just be the worst decision if the device is still limited to USB 2.

You got a pic/link, etc of that comparison chart which shows the 9.7" has a lower spec'd CPU and GPU?

Never mind, seen that on another thread. Didn't see it earlier. Slightly disappointing why they downclocked the GPU but I can understand why they did it. Still a beast though.

This really sucks. I love that both models have the ability to go up to 256GB but how do you give the smaller, less expensive version the wide color display and true-tone display but not the larger, more expensive model??? Don't even get me started on how much better the cameras in the 9.7" are. WTF???

The mild disappointment you feel would be a whimper compared to the uproar of current 13" owners if Apple announced a 13" Pro refresh today.

Here you are: http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad/compare/

12.9":
A9X third-generation chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture
Compared to A7:
CPU: 2.5x faster
Graphics: 5x faster

9.7":
A9X third-generation chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture
Compared to A7:
CPU: 2.4x faster
Graphics: 4.3x faster

Probably just clocked a bit lower for thermal reasons

I feel like somehow still Apple didnt want people who bought 12.9" iPad Pro piss off, and left some lower spec on 9.7" but most of people not gonna notice...all sneaky move...

When coached in those terms...a little more plausible. In fact, I kinda like your reasoning.

But if the iPP 9.7 gets really good battery numbers, I probably will buy this.

Not the first time that Apple leaves features on the table. How else do you expect them to lure customers to upgrade?

True, but it is supposed to be part of the "Pro" line and connectivity is important. Kind of like my replacement iMac 5K which arrived today - they could have put in USB-C and ThunderBolt 3 (Skylake's Alpine Ridge chipset supports it and should have been available), but they didn't so suppose I'll be back in 2 years for those two pieces of tech.

As a designer (architecture) the bigger screen is very important, but the true-tone and warm display tech are huge improvements, as well as the camera.

If I had to guess, True-tone display is a Software feature introduced by iOS 9.3 thus all iPad Pro's have that, while True-tone Flash is a hardware feature exclusive to iPad Pro 9.7 and it's camera.

The True-Tone display uses four-channel sensor hardware so it is (at the moment) unique to the iPad Pro 9.7.

i'm sure its 'decent', but i have yet to see a benchmark that shows the a9x as anything special over the a8x overall. the only substantial advantage it has is in single core performance (which is probably the disingenuous spec they are cherry picking when saying its 1.8 faster than the a8x), but then they regressed from a tri-core design back to dual core, effectively removing that advantage.

According to Apple, the CPU and GPU in the iPad Air 2 is 1.4 and 2.5x faster than the A7.

The larger Pro is 2.5x and 5x faster than the A7.

The smaller Pro is 2.4x and 4.3x faster than the A7.

Based on this, the smaller Pro's CPU and GPU are still 1.71429x and 1.72x faster than the iPad Air 2, while the larger Pro's CPU and GPU are 1.78571x and 2x faster than the iPad Air 2's.

The smaller Pro's GPU isn't quite as strong as the larger Pro's is, but the CPUs are so close that you'd probably never be able to tell the difference.

For me personally the improvements don't actually make a huge difference, but I do think that making the 9.7' IPP superior in some ways that the bigger one is a little confusing, and I do understand why some old IPP users may not like this and I believe the 12.9' iPad Pro sales are really going to go down, I think bigger screen will only be a benefit for a few people.

Actually I will be selling my iPad Pro and buying this one, I do love the device bet for me it's a little too big and heavy with case and keyboard, extra screen space is fine but I think I prefer the comfort of the smaller one.

but then they regressed from a tri-core design back to dual core, effectively removing that advantage.

Apple likely had to go to three cores with the A8X due to the low(er) clock speed of each core. The A9X cores run at 2.26GHz compared to 1.5GHz for the A8X so it is significantly faster on single-core tasks and still has the edge on multi-core.

it still has the multi-core edge, but only by a small margin, like 20%, which in terms of generational updates is amongst the most modest we've ever seen. i'm just thinking historically we haven't had to compromise in giving up a core like this.

Is the answer to which one to purchase, well, if you want all the nice features purchase the 9.7"? Otherwise, wait until the fall and see if they update the 12.9" to have the same features. I have a feeling a lot of people who were waiting to see what was going to be announced, even though they wanted/needed the larger screen, are going to end up purchasing the 9.7" model or holding off altogether.

Please correct me if I am mistaken because I was ready to place an order for the larger iPad Pro immediately.
Who in the world will hold the large ipad pro 12.9 inches up in the air and take a picture, surely not me...why are you complaining.....

As a designer (architecture) the bigger screen is very important, but the true-tone and warm display tech are huge improvements, as well as the camera. It is not that the 12.9" was perfectly acceptable before today, it's that the new improvements on the less expensive 9.7" are critical for proper designing and should have been updated on the 12.9" more expensive "flagship" "pro" model. It just seems a bit silly to spend more money for the larger screen, but without the other important features that the 9.7" carries.

I completely understand that you can always wait for the next version which will have more improvements. That's not the point. I think they missed the mark by not updating the 12.9" all around. They are offering the 256GB option, and I just wish they would've matched the two models feature for feature. Can't do anything about it, just offering my personal opinion.

I'm sure the true tone and warm display tech are nothing but apple made jargon, they just gave the screen some additional color calibration, nothing special or life transcending....have you seen amoled screens now that's something to envy
