An iPad can never be a Pro device for as long as it's running the exact same operating system as your mobile phone. Wake up Apple. It's clear they have no real interest in the Pro market.

I went for the Air 2, because there was no Air 3, and no small Pro at that time.
That said, the new Pro after the Air 2 came out was an option, but it was just out of budget.

Agree the senior team needs "shaking up", keep Tim though as leader.
Tim has some difficult and unpopular decisions to make very soon. (early 1/4 2017)
First for the "chop" - the utterly dreadful Mr phil schiller.
As leader you are responsible for everything that happens under you. He should step aside before he makes any more stupid decisions.

I know! also if it ran Adobe CC, that'd be great... but it doesn't so more people probably get the surface over the iPP
I won't buy a surface. I'll wait until there is a real iPad. I imagine you are right people will go to MS

I would love one but they are STUPIDLY priced and so far away from a casual purchase at this point. Apple have lost the plot and their products are floundering now that the competition has caught up at a fraction of the price.

Tell me what compition apple has on beating a polished interface in the tablet industry.

The MacBook Pros with four TB 3/USB C ports (each port being able to handle multiple streams), a high performance color-accurate DCI-P3 display, huge trackpad clickable over the entire surface, fast SSD (not a hybrid), ability to drive multiple external 5K displays (with one cable handling data, display programming, and laptop charging), 10 hour battery, all in a compact low weight package works for me.

What exactly are you looking for? Some old USB A connectors? Maybe a spoiler wing and VTEC stickers?
That spoiler wing seems like a nice idea :D

But let me be serious even if you weren't. Very few specs mean a whole lot these days. Most computers have more horsepower than most people will ever use (note I said most, because, of course, there are exceptions). I care very little for ports. I went 21st century a few years ago and I don't use wires to connect things (other than to charge). I don't use external monitors, but that would be the only thing that today still requires a port (and with airplay that might even not be true much longer). With cloud storage, I don't need terabytes on my machine.

This is why I say we need a true iPad that can do everything a laptop can do. Today, an iPad can do about 80% of what a laptop can do -- MS office is available as is iWorks. Adobe is available. Not 100% but close. with the keyboard cover you basically have a laptop. But somehow, that last 20% is what keeps me from going all in on the ipad (apps that have not been ported yet, filing system, to name two things). If we could do this right, the ipad is lighter and has a longer battery life and has touch everywhere not just a little strip. And it cost less.

So that is exactly what I am looking for - that Tim's statement be true and not just a fantasy. But back to your comment the spoiler and stickers would be nice add-ons.

Exactly. Most average ipad buyers just want it for basic websirfing etc, and don't want to shell out the extra $$$ for the pro ipads, while pro users by and large dont think the iPad pros are "pro" enough yet. Will be interesting to see what apple does with the next update.

Personally I love the iPad Pro.

I have been using a Surface Pro for work and it completely sells me on the idea of. Pro tablet. However Windows cripples is with poor software that is unresponsive and becomes bogged down with too much load often due to things that are just not necessary.

iPad with Office is far better than what Microsoft offer.

Just because you throw the 'Pro' in the name doesn't make it such. This needed to be more functional... you know... more computer like. Not an iPad with a pen.

You might and thats a credit to you but most won't. Its amazing I've recommended iOS apps to people and when they've found out its costs £2.99 their reaction is "How much ??". They wouldn't think twice about going into Starbucks and spending that on a Gingerbread Latte.

Another problem is the business models that are allowed on the App Store. The lack of a free trial system is a killer for pro level software (see the comments from sketch in my last post)

For example say i've got a great App out for the iPad Pro for artist that uses the pencil but i've priced it at £70. Nobody is going to pay that straight away without a trial period.

Apple is slowly starting to open the app store but its still unworkable for most developers of pro software. Take Pixcelmator as an example what are they selling their app for on iOS, something like £3.

Yeah I agree that apps definitely need some kind of trial period. I think that'll eventually happen. Maybe do like a few days for a trial, or maybe the developer can set how long it is.

Why is there such a perception about price when it comes to iOS apps? Is it because it's a mobile OS?

I'd love for the day to come when iPad is just as good a tool for creating as a Mac. Not as a "start on iPad, finish on Mac" thing. Maybe it's still not mature enough.

You don't think if apple implemented a desktop style iPad pro it will sell better than the current version? It would be huge. probably catabolize some of the actual computer sales though.
Not really, I think the key thing with the iPad is portability, the surface studio concept is interesting, but using surface products what they demonstrate to how they actually behave when you use them is something totally different.
I'm sure if apple ever release a product like that, it will be when it is ready and functions as apple would function.

The iPad Air and Mini are part of a very long list of products they haven't updated this year.

No updates to: Mac Pro, Mac Mini, iMac, MBA, iPod Range, Apple TV, iPad Air, iPad Mini, iWork, etc

Even the products they did update were lacklustre internal only updates such as the iPhone and Watch.

This is the worst year I can remember for Apple products.

You apparently haven't used a Surface and iPad Pro for any length of time. If you did, you would understand. You might not agree, but you'd understand.

Windows 10 is not a tablet OS. It is a desktop OS with touch UI slapped on it. iOS is a tablet OS optimized for touch.

The Surface Pro 4 is a decent notebook that can operate as a tablet in a pinch. But the tablet experience is significantly inferior to the iPad Pro. The iPad Pro is primarily a tablet and when I need to do "notebooky" things, I can remotely connect to my iMac... not ideal, but quite adequate.

There are many reasons why an iPad Pro is preferable over a Surface Pro 4 for many... and that is before I need to mention a tablet with a fan. ;)

A thousand times this.

The IPP experience is leaps and bounds better than the SP4 experience. You sit there tethered to the power outlet with the fan blasting away while you try to navigate photoshop on a relatively small screen. It is not fun at all. The Windows store has next to no nice software. W10 is horribly inept at multitouch and gestures. It still sucks at handling high DPI screens. There continue to be driver issues and weirdness periodically, even a year after release. Battery life is atrocious. The Apple Pencil is superior to the Surface Pen.

The list could go on and on and on. I should really try harder to sell my SP4. It is a brilliant idea to have laptop specs in a tablet, but it needs to be better executed. I'm still not sure the technology is quite there yet, without making a device much thicker and heavier than the surface.

I'd recommend an iPad Pro over a Windows or Mac laptop to my family and friends probably 9 out of 10 times. Excellent device.

I bought one and swapped it for my Dad's Ipad air 2 , really unimpressed with it tbh

The Pro is too big and heavy to be useful for general pad stuff and hopeless at anything approaching REAL work - get a laptop for that

The limited functionality of the iPad pro is where I struggle. I don't want to do "pro" work in iOS apps. I want better multitasking functionality of a full OS versus a very limited iOS. Maybe it's a way of thinking but I would rather have screen real estate and quick/easy access to other applications with better interface tools than my fingers. I find using my iPad too long (like interfacing to play minecraft) to strenuous to my hands and wrists versus a keyboard with full key functionality. It isn't built to be very ergonomic. What I would like is to have apple build the ipad with full mac OS interface. So when undocked to a keyboard works in iOS mode and when docked goes into full mac os mode. It's ridiculous that we're still locked to iOS as our mobile platform and Mac OS is for immobile (where you can't use it unless your at a desk).

Really just give me an iPad pro with both iOS and Mac OS functionality. Then I would dump my laptop and buy and iPad Pro. That's all I want.

At what cost? Are you willing to sacrifice affordability, battery life, weight, and thickness? You'd end up with a surfacebook-like thing and have many of the same issues it has.

It's Apple saying I don't need to buy a pc anymore to everyone. It's Apple putting Microsoft on stage with the release of the iPad Pro!

Apple is not saying, "this iPad Pro is only for creatives" get your facts straight.

Speaking about facts, did Apple say "[you] don't need to buy a pc anymore"? I don't think I've seen that.
I do see a lot of "future of computing", yada yada. But maybe i missed it. I did read Tim Cook saying the
ipp could replace pc's for many users. But that is a limited claim. It applies-imo-to creatives and light needs
users.

I love my 9.7" iPad Pro. If you are a professional in an artistic field and see the iPad as a tool, IMO, the Pro is a fantastic tool.

With a keyboard, it's damn close to a laptop replacement. In fact, it's my daily driver as I rarely use the laptop-only-art tools during the day. I think the 12.9" iPad Pro becomes a much better art tool, but it loses it's utilitarian use greatly. Especially if you carry a keyboard, you get very close to the weight and cost of a new MBP.

Adobe offers some FANTASTIC art tools that you can do real work with on an iPad. Still needing some fine-tuning but it's over 90% ready. With Microsoft Office 365 being completely useable on the iPad w/keyboard, I love it.

This is a keeper!
Agreed. Sure, I spent plenty for the combo, but I can use it like a laptop, a drawing board, or just peel off the iPad part and read a book or play a game. It's probably the most functional iPad yet, and I rarely fire up the iMac these days. A friend of mine has the 12.7" iPad Pro. I thought it was too large. Still do, but I'm judging for my own tastes and preferences.

So you returned your iPad Pro because it didn't have 3D Touch? Were you not aware it didn't have it before you purchased it? Seems a bit strange you returned your iPad for something you should have known it didn't have to begin with.

Secondly, Cook stated in the past the the level of difficulty to incorporate 3D Touch into the iPhone, let alone a larger screen. I don't think it's like Apple didn't consider the possibilities of the 3D Touch in the past, it's likely it's a larger feat to accomplish with larger displays.
Why are you hassling the commenter??? Ask yourself that.

iPhones have had 3d touch for a couple of generations. Naturally one would have the expectation iPads would have that too on their touch screens with iOS especially considering the prices of some of the devices. 3d touch is across most of the other product lines as well.

I'm not really an artist but I tend to agree from what I've seen.... It's a great solution if you do a lot of drawing.

The problem is, that's still a niche need, much like selling a device because it's "best in class for music creation and editing".

I suspect a whole lot of cheaper iPads get sold simply to serve as cash registers or kiosks.

iPad Pro 12.9" + Apple Pencil is the best drawing/art stylus combo I've ever used, including desktop Wacom Cintiq. Zero lag regardless of how fast you move the stylus or what type of drawing media the app is simulating. Pixelmator never seems to slow down regardless of how many layers you have in high-resolution. Same for Procreate. It crushes any previous desktop powered software/stylus I've used. Really drives home the usefulness of customized hardware at every level of user interaction.
