Sure it matters. If Nilay is using a laptop and it’s working fine for the things he needs to do why does it matter if the iPad Pro can do them or not? For a lot of people where iPad has replaced their laptop it probably wasn’t a specific goal it just happened.

“This screwdriver is a terrible hammer. Zero stars.”

The only rumours I'm aware of, are those about an overhauled app launcher (home screen). What iPad needs is productivity features.

Revamped Files app and tabbed apps have also been rumored. I am sure there are plenty of small additions that could help with productivity also.

On a side note — this is pretty funny. For the last 25 years at least, every new CPU upgrade has been labeled "Blazingly Fast" over its predecessor. I think the joke is over (or at least should be over) and its clear that that term is a lie. The correct description has always been: "not as slow".

Big difference.

There have been many rumors. Multiple user support, a new files app, tabs within apps, ability to run multiple instances of an app, global file system. Many of these were reported by Gurman back when he first reported that these would be pushed to ios13 because ios12 became a quality focused release.

NobodY has been saying new intel chips are “blazingly fast” for some time.

Can’t even download movies or any file I want with Safari out of the box. What am I gonna do with this much space on a TABLET?

I personally don't need that much space, but I use Plex to download movies from my server and Documents to download any file I want. I don't do either enough to where it makes it problematic to use. I think this is the big difference between the two sides here. Some people are willing to adapt workflows and some aren't. Nothing wrong with either end, just essentially what it comes down to.

I agree. They look great but the prices are making me think twice about replacing my Gen 1 Pro.

The one disappointment is the pencil charging method. I found it real convenient to use the adaptor to charge mine from a separate charger and not hang my pencil on the Pro. It also means my lovely Kavja case will not work since it completely covers all the metal and part of the bezel with leather; which might also interfere with the FaceID function.

They aren't show stoppers and probably don't impact most users. Kavja is pretty clever with their designs and maybe they'll include a slot to slide in the pencil.

I see your point but the cost of something has nothing to do with its selling price. That is set by demand; and why Apple can get huge margins while others making similar products can't.

With WiFi almost everywhere and tethering being so easy for spots it’s not buying an LTE iPad is one of the most pointless features.

In front of iPad Pro, the New MacBook Air becomes embarrassed due to its lower performance and higher price tag.
Are you kidding? The iPad Pro hardware is amazing as expected, but the software is holding it back and makes it a lot less useful overall than a traditional notebook.

Sure future crops of iOS may change that, but I'm not sure I'd get one at this point in hope the software platform drastically changes in the future without any sort of guarantee (Apple has known about iOS limitations for years and has yet to do anything about them).

Shortcuts is something very powerful added to iOS and outside of a few Apple-centric sites nobody talks about it. Sad.
Meh. Shortcuts is kind of hacky and doesn't come close to the power or elegance of something like AppleScript, without being much more approachable – if indeed at all. I only see a niche audience for it.

So? It’s better in every way than the original iPad.
Are we comparing 2018 iPads to the original now? The problem with Apple's lineup across the board is that there is either no middle range or upper-range only. So you either have to choose between ancient and expensive or expensive only. The lowest range new iPhone is $200 more expensive than the only ones with specs that aren't extraordinary for a 2018 iPhone (it has the obvious specs a no effort release would have). With the iPad Apple basically tells you to either stick to your iPad Air or buy a $799 device. The Mac have always been an expensive Sport so even though prices are high they are not completely crazy when compared to the quality Windows laptop space that is also getting very expensive.

Like what? Just curious. Apple has some good engineers, I am not sure Apple couldn't do whatever the Surface Pen can do.

Watch YouTube demos and tutorials. The pens are well-integrated and very functional. They don't just draw. Samsung in particular has done a great job in this area. You don't know you need it until you use it. I'm still of the opinion that Apple is more concerned about spec bumps and curves than evolutionary changes in function. Really, really hoping that changes some day as I would love to return to the fold. Maybe it's time for Ive to go?

Supposedly coming in iOS 13

Seems iPad Pro is on the two year silicone upgrade cycle. A10X -> A12X -> A14X (possible name). The X designation on these chips can be viewed as a bridge in performance to the next logical number.

A10X = A10.5 performance
A11 slight edge over A10X
A12 significant edge over A10X
A12X = A12.5 performance
A13 etc

This iPad Pro is an transitional product to the new design language. Best to hold off purchasing if one has a 2017 model.

How many people even used applescript to start with?

I use iPad Pro for my work daily. I must be impossible!
No, but you are motivated by brand participation, or whatever. Lack of
mouse/trackpad support and lack of a conventional file sytem combined
with i/o makes the ipad a productivity black hole. I own 2 and love them
for sketch work. If sketchbook pro did not have a unique folder set up
on apple cloud, i would swap for a surface

I agree so much I bought the 2017!

For me LTE is what I want because it is always on. No need to hunt for a hotspot and enter a password, no data caps like tethered , and not using up my phones battery.

It’s not needed by everyone but for those that use it it is worth it.

Yea, I am probably not going to do that. I figured if they were that far ahead in terms of functionality, it would be easy to describe a couple features. Contextual menus and fast switching between tools is a nice new feature with the Pencil 2, so I am excited to see what developers do with that. I am not sure what Ive has to do with your points as I feel the new iPad is one of the best designed products Apple has made.

Well someone mentioned the $499 starting point of the original iPad, which is now $170 cheaper, with far greater functionality. Not everyone needs the features on the $799 computer, so I think it's nice to have options. For instance, my girlfriend uses her 2018 iPad w/ Pencil for her graphic design work and loves it. She doesn't notice the better screen, speakers, speed, etc. though.

One thing the new iPads have done for me is convince me to go ahead and get an iPad for $250 from Target this Black Friday because while I now believe there will be an upgrade to what I really want, the iPad Mini, in the future (otherwise, Tim Cook was just being a dick), there’s also a good chance that they’ll up the price. So I’m hedging my bets now.

Hey, those Apple produced shows don’t pay for themselves!

The issue with the iPad now is more than ever the limitations of iOS.
Lack of mass storage support (actually it's an arbitrary limitation. Pretty sure the OS would support APFS, NTFS, exFAT,...)
Lack of control when it comes to multitasking (Apps in background may get halted, offloaded,...)
Lack of input (yes, for some stuff a mouse is still the best choice, although, the pencil often comes close)
Lack of proper external screen support.
crippled Bluetooth stack.
[...]

Apple also needs to drop some of its guidelines for serious Apps/Games. It should be perfectly acceptable to require certain accessoires for certain apps.

Anyway... can't wait for OSX on ARM... That should solve those problems once and for all...

Just put MacOS on the damn iPad already. It would sell like hot cakes and everyone else would have to play catch up. Lightest, thinnest, fastest etc. But incremental updates for software and hardware dragged throughout the years is how a business makes money..i get it.
