Apple's rumored iPad Pro with Face ID will likely be released in the second quarter of 2018, according to Rosenblatt Securities analyst Jun Zhang.

If accurate, the timeframe suggests Apple will unveil the new iPad Pro models at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, which will likely take place June 4-8 at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. Apple similarly unveiled its current iPad Pro lineup at WWDC last year.

Zhang expects the revamped iPad Pro to have slimmer bezels and no home button, in line with the iPhone X. The revamped design will likely be featured on both the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, although his research note didn't specify.

Apple's plans to release an iPad Pro with Face ID were first revealed by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said the refresh would occur in 2018. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman was a bit more specific, noting the iPad Pro with Face ID would debut "a little more than a year" after the current models.

The 10.5-inch iPad Pro and second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro launched in June 2017, so it's not entirely clear if "a little more than a year" meant WWDC 2018 or Apple's annual September event where it introduces new iPhones.

The new iPad Pro models will likely retain LCDs instead of OLED displays due to supply, cost, and technological constraints. It's unclear if the tablets will have a notch for the TrueDepth sensor housing, or if the device will have uniformly slim bezels on all four sides with enough room for the components.

A supply chain report out of China recently claimed the new iPad Pro models will be faster thanks to an octa-core A11X Bionic chip with three high-performance "Monsoon" cores and five energy-efficient "Mistral" cores.

There's no word on potential pricing yet, but the new iPad Pro lineup will likely cost more than the current 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch models, which start at $649 and $799 respectively in the United States. Since the new models won't have OLED displays, however, the price increase might not be substantial.

Apple is also rumored to release a new 9.7-inch iPad for $259 in March, while the fate of the iPad mini remains uncertain.

Never will it have this outrageous notch. The one without and bigger bezels looks WAY better.

Ha,, Apple's running into more of a cost barrier now the bigger they get on larger screens... but we all know they will change and now include these missing features when "cost has suddenly become cheaper"

That’s why there is palm rejection on the iPad’s and it works very well, the same would be applied to a reduced or no bezel iPad.

How in the world do you carry an iPad where your palm would even touch the sides, much less the front? When I carry mine, my palm is squarely under the device, to support it. Without a bezel, I would need thumb rejection, which would be very, very problematic....

If it's LCD it'll need a chin, which means no need for a notch when you can make a forehead to match the chin.

And without the home button and less belzels Apple could either add more screen or reduce the overall size of the iPad Pro, that would be interesting for the 12.9”

Yea I think that’s exactly what was needed for the 12.9 as it was too big and heavy for solid mobile use. Should be interesting to see how it all shakes out. I’ll definitely be upgrading though.

why does LCD need a chin? and wouldn't that also affect the rumors of the cheaper 6.1" LCD iphone next year with face id?

I'm not sure that no bezels is ideal on the larger iPads. it will make holding the device quite tricky with your hands touching the side of the screen etc....

But for me the bezels on the current gen iPad Pro 12.9 is fine

Ever since the iPad mini iPads have had excellent thumb rejection on the edges. I often hold my 10.5 inch iPad with my thumb on the edge and it doesn’t interfere with other inputs at all.

When it comes to the iPad, I'd prefer a bezel so I have something to hold on to. I handle my iPad very differently from an iPhone.
Just hold it with a thumb on the screen. iPads can very easily reject your thumb.

Glad I picked up a current gen iPad Pro 10.5 recently..
It might be the last iPad to have TouchID. I'm not yet convinced FaceID is better/faster/easier, so pleased that I have TouchID iPad.
It is the other way around.
FaceID on iPhone is Bulls***.
On Mac and iPad makes sense.

Ooh. I know this one.

Two notches.

What did I win?

Tricky? I think the word you're looking for is "impossible". They weigh entirely too much to carry them safely by the edges. A bezel-free design on an iPad is pretty much an epic fail all around, even without a notch. A notch would just be the final nail in the coffin.

Not exactly. I never touch the bezels on my 10.5. I place my fingers on the back on each side and my thumbs go above the screen until I need to tap something. Not very difficult as my palms just rest on the sides.

Over the past year, since I picked up a new iPad Pro at launch, the thing has completely eclipsed my MacBook as my portable writing rig. I totally love that thing, and if these improvements go in, I'm definitely in line to upgrade. I'd upgrade even if it isn't completely necessary for me, assuming the price bump won't be astronomical, which if what all of you are saying is true, it shouldn't. If you can only do notches with OLED screens, and if OLED has supply constraints, then I bet Apple would just keep some bezels and work the face ID into them to maintain a notch-free design. It'd be a beautiful device. I'd get one.

wow, the notch looks incredibly bad on the larger form factor. Not a good move by Apple in my opinion.
Rounded screen corners also aren't appealing, and will be more intrusive than on the iPhone if the aspect ratio stays the same.

I agree - I could go for the top and bottom bezels (as held in portrait mode) made as small as the current side bezels on the pro, but I wouldn't like to see them any smaller unless it gets exceptionally good at ignoring fingers on the edges.

Complete fail?

1. Won't work in landscape mode, which is literally the *only* way I've ever used an iPad, going back to the iPad 2.

2. I owned an iPhone X and really didn't mind the notch, but on an iPad it's going to be a much more serious issue, probably a deal-killer for me.

Hey, Siri. Ask Tim to gimme a shout when he has these fixed?

Without bezels, they will probably attach coffee mug style handles to all four edges, so it looks a lot like a serving tray. Can you imagine - every time you pick up your iPad you accidentally launch an app, or worse, start deleting them by accident. I can imagine reading on the iPad, and as you scan each line, you constantly shift it back and forth between your left and right hands.

Does FaceID support multiple faces? The iPad in our household is a shared device so if it doesn't, FaceID is a non-starter. I'm not going to revert to typing an unlock code or forcing my wife to (or leaving our device unlocked).
