1. Notch isn't necessary to accomplish this on iPad, that should be common sense. But getting it working in landscape is.

2. Where are the March products?
Agreed. The iPad's dimensions make it so that the marginal "benefit" of a notch is too small to be noticeable. It would make more sense to have thinner edges that can still accommodate sensors at the top.

Either design is fine with me. I simply want Face ID. After using it on my iPhone X, I find TouchID on my 10.5 inch iPad Pro annoying. I love how it works with passwords in particular.

The one very good thing about no more home button is for those of us who use the Apple Pencil a lot.

Sometimes I end up using my pencil as a stylus to tap on everything, not just for writing. The issue for me has been having to reach down with my finger to hit the home botton in order to switch apps and to go home. with the iPhone X, you swipe to go home and switch apps. That means we would be able to use our pencil to do any action on the new iPads, without missing a beat switching between finger and pencil input.

You know if you got rid of the bezels you could fit a 9.7" screen (albeit with a little less "usable" space due to the rounded corners) in an iPad only a little wider and a smidge taller than the current mini.

I'm not sure that no bezels is ideal on the larger iPads. it will make holding the device quite tricky with your hands touching the side of the screen etc....

But for me the bezels on the current gen iPad Pro 12.9 is fine

You do know that Apple has used software to reject certain touches in the bezel area for a while now, right? The current bezels on the iPad Pro 10.5 are too small to be used without this touch rejection software.

The concept with the notch looks absolutely gorgeous! Can’t wait till June! This will be my first iPad so I’m holding off the purchase till the update.

My one concern is a potential price hike; as much as I love drawing on my 12.9" iPad Pro, the only way I will eventually upgrade is when subsequent models are on sale. I will not pay northward of $1k for another iPad.

The bezels on the 12.9in iPad are fine. I want somewhere to put my thumbs when I hold it.
Edge-to-edge screen and therefore the notch requirement is just pandering to the latest fad. Its is not needed.

Why is camera at the "top" anyway? I use my iPad most of the time in landscape orientation.
I'm hoping for no-notch whatever the placement of course.

And: please release an updated Apple Pencil that you can store/charge via the iPad magnetic multiport on the side.
This seems like a complete missed design opportunity. I am forever having to charge my Apple Pencil. I don't use it much but have to charge it nearly every day by plugging in to the side port. It is a real annoyance.

Why not press the home button with the pencil? That's what I do. Thankfully (unlike the iPHone 8) the iPadPro home button is a *real* button that can be depressed.

The main issue is COST. Slamdung doesn't have to BUY the displays from anyone; they simply REQUISITION them.

Why?
Assuming this would be one of the big products for wwdc along with macbook series. So far, no mac pro parts rumors.

Agreed! On an iPhone it makes sense to have the notch at the top as most people use it in portrait mode.
Tablets such as MS Surface Pro and Lenovo Miix have their cameras on the long side, as most people use tablets in landscape mode.

When you use the iPad with attachable keyboard it is used in landscape mode.

If Apple are pushing the idea that the iPad Pro can be a replacement for a computer/Mac then they need to ensure it's design favours that idea.

Thus the mockup pictures should include one that envisions the orientation in landscape mode, with the notch that is.

As long as the edges are designated as "no touch" areas with enough clearance, a bezel-less screen would be just as easy to hold as a screen with bezels. It's just software-dependent and assumes Apple and other software devs keep it in mind.

Sorry, not in favor of that. The Pencil tips are not designed for that and to me that just doesn’t feel natural/smooth. Imagine being able to just swipe the Pencil up one inch starting from the bottom, instead of hitting a home button.

I'd love an 11.5" device with reduced bezels so it's nearly the same physical size as the 10.5". Give it the @3X retina treatment with an OLED display that is the same UI point size as the 12.9" model. Get rid of both 10.5" and 12.9" sizes and make that the default iPad Pro starting at $749 for 128GB.

As for me personally, I don't really see a reason to upgrade my 10.5" iPad Pro any time soon. I'll wait for OLED or mLED, which probably means 2019 at the earliest.

Side note: I wish Apple would stop the trend of releasing new iPads a couple months before the new iPhone. It's not much of a "Pro" device if the new iPhone that comes out two months later is slightly faster. It should come out in November every year with an X version of the new iPhone chip so that it blows the iPhone away. But I also get why they want to spread their products out over the course of the year. It's quite a bit to buy that many new Apple things within a few months around the holidays. At the very least they should move it back to March.

The article didnt speculate if the bezels would shrink and the screen stay the same size? Or if the screen size would increase into the bezels? Hmm. I'd also love to see an ipad mini pro the same physical size as the current mini, but with no bezels. But seems like that ain't happening.

Regarding the notch? I would imagine Apple will shrink the bezels all the way round but leave enough to hide the face ID cameras and not have a bezel. But what do I know? Nothch! What is it good for?! Absolutely Nothing! Huh! Say it again! Aaaaaaahhhh!

My iPad Air really needs to be upgraded; I have been holding out for either a complete redesign as pictured above or if the redesign does not happen, I have been holding out for the price drop of last years iPad pro when the new one is announced.

Can't wait to get my hands on a new one.

I have a very similar device--iPad mini 2! It is SO slow and everything is choppy. And it doesn't support split screen or anything. I really want an upgrade too, but my super casual content-consumption-type iPad usage doesn't warrant $600+ for an iPad Pro. Besides, I only like the iPad Pro for it's display (Seriously, True Tone, laminated display, Wide Gamut, and Pro Motion are INCREDIBLE. But I can live without it.) and I dont even need or want the Apple Pencil.

That's why I'm mostly really intrigued by this rumored $269 iPad. If they make an even newer 9.7" iPad with maybe an A11 CPU, slightly better display, etc that is under $300, can do split screen, etc etc, id be stoked. And really tempted to buy, despite my precarious financial situation.

I probably would wait for awhile and grab a cheap cellular one on Swappa though. I don't explicitly need cellular, but it's a non-upgradeable device and I'd love to have the option if possible. Plus I'm a pokemon GO player (still, I know) and GPS is a must for that. Wifi-based hotspot location simply doesn't work for that game. I'm also a cellular network nerd so if I could pop in a spare SIM to test networks in my area, and not have to deal with that on my main phone, that would be fun for me.

why does LCD need a chin? and wouldn't that also affect the rumors of the cheaper 6.1" LCD iphone next year with face id?
I might be mistaken, but I think all LCD phones currently on the market have chins because you need to put some chip or control module for the display in there. There are folks working on getting rid of it, not sure anyone has successfully brought it to mass market yet. We'll see what Apple comes up with. I hope they figure it out (for phones) because I still prefer LCD over OLED at the moment..
