I can see myself getting one these. Needing 12.9” is one of my main motivations in getting a pro, so no harm done if that’s the only size it comes in. TBH though, a 12.9” air would suit my needs better. I don’t need any of the advantages the pro has besides a larger screen. That’s what my MacBook Pro is for.

You are not informed enough. Don't you remember the fiasco with Intel chips and their hardware flaw that plagued all their chips for few generations before they fixed it?

Its almost like when one type of hardware dominates the market, more people put effort into finding flaws in it.

No one is hunting for flaws in old Cyrix processors, for example.

All going to ARM is doing is isolating Mac’s and their pathetically small market share from the rest of the computing world. Most of us can live with a few things not supporting Mac, because we can easily dual boot, but it’s about to get 1000x worse.

Mac’s are dead to me. I already have to dual boot to use any engineering software, now I just outright won’t be able to. Not worth the hassle, I’ll buy a Lenovo or something.

While this looks amazing, the OS still really limits what the device can do. Yes the device itself is new and has some new hardware features, but it's still limited by the OS itself. I want a new iPad, but I constantly remind myself, what would this new iPad do that my current one can't? Yes it might be a little bit faster, a brighter screen.. but in all reality, when it comes to day to day use.. what are these new models really doing that any of the (current or past) pro models/air can't currently do?

I'll get one of these. But I refuse to go ARM on the Mac
Big mistake to ditch Intel and AMD. They have years of experience designing Processors. APPLE makes errors. lots just look at macOS beta's.
Sorry, but this is a really dumb argument. Remember the iOS 13 beta? Buggy as hell. And still Apple managed to make the iPhone 11 & 11 Pro great ... You just can’t equate hardware with software.

is miniLED a stop gap for microLED?

Would love some new screen tech in some Apple device, regardless, to see for myself though!

I believe so ... I had been following micro LED development for a few years, & then ALL of a sudden, mini LED rumors started to appear 6-9 months OR so ago !

I have a Wait & See attitude on this.

In the meantime, the 2020 iPad Air 4 is an Extremely Credible iPad ... IMO, the best value Apple has offered since the Air 2, years ago !

And here, I'm referring to the Wi-Fi ONLY versions.

Anyone have any idea of when they would launch this new model if they're starting production of the LED panels late this year? Seems like March would be a long wait...

I'm also starting to wonder if the reason they are only talking about 12.9" is that they have found a way to make it smaller with slimmer bezels, thereby negating the need for an 11" model.

Why is iPad getting all the cool advancements? iPhone needs power button Unlock and Mini-Led, too.

I just got myself an iPad Pro 12.9' but I have the option to return it within the next month. I was wondering if you would be able to convince me doing that. Of course, I can read the article but I don't really understand the implications. e.g. is the form factor expected to change?

That said, I am kind of happy with my current purchase, I am a premed student and taking notes, annotating PDFs on the thing is wonderful. Though, I know I'll be disappointed if there is a major upgrade to the device in the coming months because I know I will be holding on to the tablet for many years.

Feel free to send me a message if you have advice.

Thanks

Korea's ETNews today reports that LG will supply Apple with Mini-LED displays for new iPad models set to launch in the first quarter of 2021. The report, highlighted by Patently Apple, claims that LG will likely begin mass production of the displays at the end of this year.

Mini-LED backlighting provides many of the same benefits as OLED displays, including higher brightness, improved contrast ratio, and increased power efficiency.

Rumors of a Mini-LED iPad Pro have been plentiful. Back in June, cryptic-but-reliable leaker L0vetodream said that Apple planned to launch new iPad Pro models with an A14X chip, 5G, and a Mini-LED display in the first half of 2021. Multiple sources have claimed this iPad Pro will be a 12.9-inch model, including analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and DigiTimes.

Apple last refreshed the iPad Pro in March, but it was a relatively minor update, with new features including an A12Z Bionic chip that is essentially an A12X chip with an extra GPU core enabled, an Ultra Wide camera that enables 0.5x zoom, a LiDAR Scanner for enhanced augmented reality, and better sounding microphones. It was the first update to the iPad Pro since the device received a major redesign in October 2018.

Today's report claims that Apple also plans to use Mini-LED displays for future MacBook and iMac models, as previously rumored.

minLED is not a stop gap, it's the next step in LCD evolution. microLED are years away.

I hope it doesn’t i tried using the 2020 ipad camera for professional pictures and lets just say it’s too big and heavy for continuous sessions. It’s just too huge. I’m talking about the 12.9” model, smaller is better

If Apple had any real stones they’d announce an iPad Pro running a full version of MacOS next week. They don’t, so they won’t, but it would actually be interesting compared to what they will announce: a bunch of brain swapped same old’s that sound fun on paper but in reality will be more limited and expensive in the long run for actual professionals they are aimed at.

If you're happy with it now, you're gonna be happy with it then.

If it's doing what you want now, I see now reason to return it. Whilst technology improves over time, certain iterations can be a step backwards (iPad 3!). We don't know what potential flaws it will have. I think the Microled iPad will be awesome, but tbh my iPad Pro can't necessarily do THAT much more than the 5th gen I gave to my mom. It's still an iPad at the end of the day.

If you can get further now in your studies with your iPad than waiting for some time in the future, keep it. Remember than the iPad AFTER than will generally keep all the features and then some.

That makes even more sense given the specs and pricing of the new Air, they'll be looking for a way to position the Pro model as the "Pro" and justify the extra money we assume it will cost.
They better justify it, otherwise most will simply buy the Air.

The Air went from $499 to $599, I could see the Pros getting a $100 bump as well. So $899/$1,099.

Better to test these features on a device lineup that sells 45 million units a year before you implement them on a device lineup that sells 190+ million a year.

So March is the earliest for the next iPad Pro by the looks of it... that’s if COVID doesn’t cause more delays in early 2021...

I can imagine the pro line up in 2021 being...

iPad Pro (A14X, 5G, Pro Motion) 11 Inch display

iPad Pro Max (A14X, 5G, Pro Motion, miniLED) 12.9 Inch display

The reason I think this is because of two reasons:

1. Magic Keyboard, the 2021 pros will likely have the same form factor as the 2020 versions, and ditching the 11 Pro is just daft as the only iPad in their line up compatible with the 11 Inch Keyboard is the Air 4 which has a smaller camera bump in comparison to the MK.

2. As we saw with the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, instead of both of them being the same phone just different sizes, the Pro Max has a better camera, this time round the iPad Pro Max 12.9 will have a better screen, it’s just to give the Max models more of a selling point going forward than just a bigger screen.

Why Mini-LED displays instead of OLED? Whats the benefit?
Provides local dimming capability at a lower price for tablet sized screens + eliminates possibility of burn-in. Burn-in comes into play for the iPad because it would be expected to be used for longer periods of time and would be more likely to be used with apps that have a lot of static display items similar to laptops, like tool bars and menu bars etc.
