Here's my perspective (not that anyone asked)...and it's probably already been stated since the thread is so long, and I haven't read all the posts.

I am a retired business owner. For years I designed my company website. I was a programmer before owning my own company, so it wouldn't have been a problem for me to use Javascript, Java applets, Flash, etc.

Flash is cool. Lots and lots of websites use Flash. I understand this - we all know this. However, I also know that there is a large percentage of the population that doesn't use or like Flash, for many reasons. Many have computers that aren't powerful enough to display Flash content very well. Many still have slow Internet connections and don't want to download huge Flash content just to browse a website. Many don't want the ads. Many use computers with operating systems that don't have very well optimized plugins for displaying Flash content.

As a business owner I decided NOT to use Flash when designing my website because there would always be a large percentage of potential clients that I could not reach if I used Flash. My website could have been cooler. It could have taken less time to design. However, I decided to design the website so that I could reach nearly everyone.

So, when I browse to a website that only supports Flash, I wonder if the developer of the website and owner of the company realize how shortsighted they are being. Millions and millions of people simply cannot see their website, no matter how cool or awesome it looks.

If Apple decides not to support Flash on the iPad, I support and appreciate their decision. I believe they are trying to make a global statement. I bet that the iPhone and the iPad will be a catalyst and convince many people to modify their websites to work without requiring Flash. I bet it already has.

So, I believe that the argument shouldn't be to convince Apple to implement Flash on the iPod and iPad. It really should be to convince people to stop using Flash.

Just my $0.02.

kill it softly so people can watch hulu in the meantime maybe. silverlight support for netflix? own up to the war and lack of support too?

i respect your opinion and hate flash... but it's everywhere...

I don't understand the hate for Flash.

Flash allows people to create websites with some awesome interactivity, animation, sound effects, video and more.

Why would you prefer plain text over Flash? Are you the kinda people that turn off all the effects when you use Windows 7 to make it look like Windows 95?

I just don't get it.

Thank you so much Macrumors for bringing AAPL down by another $4/share today on your phony story. You are being credited today (not by me) for this achievement. Why does it even matter if the iPad supports Flash. Obviously, with HTML5, Flash is going to disappear at some point because most programmers prefer to write in the standards-based code. So, in the pursuit of sensationalism, you may have just delivered a significant blow to people holding AAPL. The financial analysts, who know very little about the technology, are reading your site and making their decision to sell or to buy based on the information you are posting here. Please be responsible when posting stories like these that have no informational value but bring up all the FUD about Apple and that cost us, the shareholders, thousands of dollars.

Let me get this straight. You are complaining you got an outsized buying opportunity today for a stock you plan to hold through this iPad product cycle anyway?

What's the problem again?

Looked at another way, you could sell your stock, pay less capital gains tax than you otherwise would have, rebuy it within an hour, and have a tax basis that would further moderate future capital gains taxes?

What's the problem again?

Rocketman

Marked as negative again...

As said in previous thread I will mark each iPad news (regardless of what they are) as negative UNTIL Apple pull finger out of their ****** and allows Flash player to be installed...

Hezuz!

No NOOOOO, Please Heavens NOOOOO!!!. Don't click the negative button. I don't think I could go on if you click the negative button. OMG, MY WORLD IS COMING TO AN END, SOMEBODY SAVE ME, NOOOOOO!!!!!:D

b) Keeping the OS under Apple's control so that Apple can fix problems, add features, and even innovate at the deepest hidden levels, without needing Adobe's cooperation and being dependent on Adobe's quality control. (Read up on the problem of Flash still being 32-bit while Apple was trying to move OS X to 64-bit.

Not to nitpick, but ARMv7-A (which is what A4 is based on) is 32bit. Kinda hard to move iPhone OS to 64 bit when the CPU you run it on isn't.

I can see how this argument parallels the move to USB. I also see how the argument parallels the MMS one.

In response to the promotional image, I believe all Apple has to say is the images are simulated to get off the hook.

Well, maybe they are just realising that many of the target audience for this web appliance, supposedly the general public at large and not just existing Apple customers, actually do use Flash, so either aren't going to buy or may return it. Blame who you like, but there's probably only one person who made that decision.

Im sorry but this is just like the iphone but larger and no matter how fast they make it they won't release the flash for it. WTF is going on seriously! PUT FLASH ON THESE PRODUCTS!!!, they can handle them trust me.

Apple should let users have flash installed if they want, but use something near-identical to ClickToFlash in mobile Safari by default. Then instead of a 'missing plugin' icon or whatever there would be the option to use Flash without it automatically being a drain on resources.

I don't like Flash for numerous reasons, but Apple's refusal to let users decide whether to use it or not is sadly typical.

Can someone explain to me why some people dislike flash? I almost never come across flash sites anymore that make me wait for a download of more then a second or two. My browser never crashes from flash sites and as far as it taxing my processor this again is something I never notice. I use a standard DSL connection and I'm on a MacBook Pro a couple of years old. Never a problem.

I'm a firm supporter of building clean, uncluttered sites and if html/javascript is the right tool then great but someone suggested earlier that they can animate anything in html/javascript/ajax that can be done in flash. A blockbuster movie website for instance cannot be done in these technologies. If so I've never seen it done before.

I understand that not all sites should be built this way but the web would be a much more boring place without them.

Get over it. If they don't want Flash they don't want it. No reason to make a post such as that due to one piece of Software. What do you want Flash for anyway? Give me a specific reason... If you say Hulu... who cares about Hulu. Ever heard of Torrents. I would rather watch my movies and TV shows without commercials and interruption.

That is a bad argument... Complete Fanboy zealitory right here folks.

Oh my favorite product lacks a feature. But if you go thew this obscure and quazi legal approach that proves that this feature isn't needed...

There is Hulu but a lot of other Online TV companies that uses Flash... There are sites such as Jib-Jab and many other flash based entertainment sites. Or online games...

you sound like me when I use to be a Linux zealot... if the feature doesn't exist then we dont need it.

Excellent post and well said!!!! Thank you.

Downloading TV Shows is not stealing. All my movies I rip from my own DVD collection or I make a rip from NetFlix. The majority of my movies are on Blu-Ray which almost all movies anymore come with a digital copy.

If I can I watch my TV Show when it airs on TV. If not I will grab it from EZTV and watch it then.

Since when has ripping from Netflix been legal?

But that's crap, because the Mac version ALWAYS performed at about half the speed of the PC one, before any of this was implemented. Sounds like an excuse to me.

It's not crap if you do the research. Apple is preventing Adobe from finally reaching parity with Windows. You can verify it yourself if you care to find out:

But let’s talk more about the Flash Player on the Mac. If it is not 100% on par with the Windows player people assume that it is all our fault. The facts show that this is simply not the case. Let’s take for example the question of hardware acceleration for H.264 video that we released with Flash Player 10.1. Here you can see some published results for how much the situation has improved on Windows. Unfortunately we could not add this acceleration to the Mac player because Apple does not provide a public API to make this happen. You can easily verify that by asking Apple. I’m happy to say that we still made some improvements for the Mac player when it comes to video playback, but we simply could not implement the hardware acceleration. This is but one example of stumbling blocks we face when it comes to Apple.

Lol spoken like a true fanboy

forget about hulu , full web experience, etc

so I'd love to hear ur response

U want to just wait years for this? That would make u happy?

U hAve a mind and a voice - don't be a follower - don't be another lemming

Extrapolating a person's nature from what is essentially a factual statement is lame.

There was a time when if you didn't have Java you didn't have the "full web experience." There was a time when you needed flash to see youtube videos. There was a time when blinking text and crawling highlights were the currency of the web realm. Times change. Just as youtube provides an HTML5 version for streaming video, so too will most other websites before long. Yeah, there will be stuff that holds out for a long time, but that doesn't make the guy a "lemming" or a "follower." In practical terms a lot of people aren't giving up much (aside from assorted crashes or the need to install a flash blocker) by giving up flash. Other people spend all day playing flash games. Being in one camp or the other doesn't say about one's personality what you so allege - if anything, I'd rather be the guy that doesn't spend his day playing Facebook games and watching SNL reruns on Hulu.

300 posts and counting...

About what!?!?!

It amazes me how many completely and utterly clueless people are crawling on this site... In fact - I bet most of those who repeated HTML5 about 12545634 times by now don't even have a clue what they are talking about...

Here are the facts (as in reality!)

1. I am running 2008 MBP with latest flash player installed and both Safari and Firefox never crashed on me. Next to this fact - player runs fine! Sure it can be better and sure it needs to catch up with Windowz version but gap is hugely narrowed with latest release. FACT!

2. Fact number 2. Flash Player IS BROWSER PLUG IN! Which means you can decide to install it or not - to use it or not... I understand some people who don't see need for it. Sure! Uninstall the bloody thing and stop repeating HTML5 like a complete clueless mongol! FACT!

3. Flash isn't going anywhere... In fact very soon indeed Flash market is going to EXPAND with huge number of mobile devices running it. FACT!

4. Huge number of websites out there are Flash based and to simply claim that iPad is "best browsing experience" is a) pure and utter lie b) in fact it is total opposite since my browsing experience is going to get crippled tremendously! FACT!

5. Simply make Flash player OPTIONAL just like it is on every other platform (be that computer or mobile device) and let people decide if they are going to use it or not. Give users FREEDOM OF CHOICE!

Point here is that there is NOTHING to argue about...

About the camera thing: I would love it but I think Apple is seeing more the limitations of ATT's network and thinking that putting a camera for video conferencing is going to completely destroy it. Pretty much making the vid camera useless. Plus I can't imagine how ridiculous it would look to hold this up like a camcorder.

That does not make any sense at all. Apple has been very good at making sure certain types of programs can only work over WiFi and not on 3G. They could do the same with iChat on this device. Problem solved. That is no reason to not include a camera.

Now, I do agree with you about the whole using it as a camcorder thing though. :D

Very easy bro

fanboys

they hate what they don't have and support apple's decisions

just like when the fanboys told u - u didn't need mms , voicedialing, video, copy and paste... But when it comes it's like "see! See! They listen! So innovative"

it's quite disturbing

this thread is disturbing - good god I hate fanboys

Eh... with HTML 5 coming and H.264 video, there won't be much point to Flash in the future. So I'm okay if they keep it standards based.

Because there is a much better way to do it without using Flash.

It's not crap if you do the research. Apple is preventing Adobe from finally reaching parity with Windows. You can verify it yourself if you care to find out:

Right. That's why silverlight, doing the same thing, takes up a tiny percentage of the mac's resources compared to flash. What a shock that Adobe blames apple. I guess Apple gave microsoft the secret sauce but is holding out on Adobe.

I also suppose you need secret sauce to figure out how to make a PAUSED video not take 50% of my MBP's CPU. If you think that "Apple won't help" is an excuse for flash to eat all of your CPU when it isn't doing anything other than displaying a static image, I guess you'll believe anything.

Ok - I am in art, design and photographic business and well over 80% of my contacts (as in artists, designers, photographers etc...) HAVE FLASH BASED SITES!!!

Is this hard to understand!?!?!

Meaning, using this awesome tool made for best browsing experience ever - I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO MY JOB which is keeping an eye on all those guys and their latest work...

I personally don't give a damn about video or Hulu!

I want to be able to browse the net using web STANDARDS!

Maybe one of the best, well reasoned arguments about needing flash on the iPhone and iPad - in particular the iPad. If in deed the iPad is positioned as a "part time replacement" for those times we don't need a full laptop - then flash is needed.

Sadly, I see a class action lawsuit after the iPad is released. All based on the comment of "the best web browsing experience". Only then will we get to here the truth behind the lack of flash on these devices.

Or worse yet, Apple relents - and then we here all the complaints about overheating and sluggish performance - not necessarily with the type of sites you want to go to - but the likes of Hulu and such....

BTW, I got a nasty little burn when I dosed off watching a movie on Hulu with my Macbook Pro over the holidays...
