There is an excellent write up on gizmodo. If you google hackintosh dell mini 10v it should be one of the first things to pop up. Meklort.com is a great resource too. This gentlemen wrote a fantastic program called netbook installer, usually shortened to NBI. For more information check out mydellmini.com.

Thanks, I will look into that, I wanna do that to my Dell Mini 10v

Only one application, or one application plus the iPod functionality?

One application + any other applications that are allowed to run in the background. That later set is currently restricted to applications like the iPod functional, etc. (all Apple provided and background optimized).

Note at any given moment an iPhone has several processes running each with potentially multiple threads.

I just watched jobs introducing the ipad, he says its better then a laptop :p hell no, you can barely do anything on this.. Everything this ipad can do my Ipod touch can do aswell.. sure I guess ipad has a bigger screen, but thats about it =/ this is useless... I was actually expecting it to run Snow Leopard..

All i want is a touch screen mactablet w/ 10" or 12" screen.
Running OSX. w/ a price tab of under 1K.
Will apple make it? i don't want to pay premium for a mod.

I want to be the first kid on the block with one of these. In fact, I'll take two of the $829 models..

No you will not. Your mom won't allow you. The conversation will probably go something like this:

- Mom I want iPad!
* what for?
- for <bla bla bla>!
* you can use your iPod for that
- and also for <bla bla bla>
* you can use your MacBook for that. Go do your home work, lazy bastard!

Why don't people get this?!

So its a larger iPod touch? Doesn't run OS x, no camera, no iChat.
Boring. I'm not into playing games or downloading time wasting apps that do little but entertain. No multi-tasking.
A real disappointment. Would it have been so difficult to take the display on a Macbook and make that touch sensitive and have a real Mac computer as a slate instead of a toy that shows pictures?

Nope, because that product already exists, and no sane person wants a fully touch screen OS - you'd get exhausted pretty quickly and it lacks any accuracy.

This is a $499 device for browsing the web and listening to music slumped on yr sofa, it's about $100 more than a kindle that has a monochrome display and only does one function. It's not a laptop replacement, it's not a phone, it's a "home computer" for the rest of us - those who just wanna browse the web, check email, read some articles and play a few minutes of mindless games.

If you wanna play games - xbox/ps3
If you want a high end tablet computer - wacom cintiq
If you want a powerful computer to earn an income - mac pro.

It's not that difficult a concept - this IS a toy - that's the point.

I on the other hand love my iPod Touch and the only things I've wanted changed about it are a bigger screen and a faster processor.

So this, for me, is my dream portable device.

I'm sure a lot of people feel just like you do but that doesn't make it a tablet, netbook killer and the next BIG thing. You can put a dress on a sheep and call him sally but he's still a sheep.

Time Machine

As it is possible to create documents etc on the iPad, it would be very useful to be able to back it up using Time Machine.

I like the look of it, with iWork it does more than I was expecting. The real keyboard options will make it a very useful second computer.

I was surprised to see the doc connector accessories, I assume you'll only be able to connect them only to cameras (rather than any USB device). If it could be used to tether to a digital camera to use as an external display that would be very cool.

It's shiny, but leaves too many gaps

Why not reinvent OS X? If multitouch is the future of everything with a screen, they should have gotten on that. The iPhone OS is just not nearly as awesome as they want it to be.

Also, a few pragmatic people have mentioned some of this, but:
1) WILL IT PRINT? Or not? This is pretty basic in the world of computing. The iPhone doesn't because nobody makes documents on it. People make documents on this. It has to print. If it needs an expensive adapter to print, you have cow-pies between your ears.
2) TAKING NOTES. HOW? With no stylus, you have to type. Fine, at least it's quiet. But, will I have to look down in my lap or on my desk? It's actually better to use a laptop in that case.
3) CAMERA? What about all those patent things about cameras embedded in the display itself? Is that why we don't see one?
4) REDUNDANT, MUCH? And the most blatant, egregious problem with this device -- it does the old things in slightly new ways. I have a calendar app on my iphone, which is easier to carry and buzzes for alarms. Mail, same deal. Or it'll be easier to type on my MacBook. In many ways, this looks like a downgraded MacBook Air. For example, what's with touting that the Facebook app works? On a screen of this size, you sure as hell would just use Safari and browse that way. Why even bother porting the Facebook app? Because you are getting carried away, that's why.

It's like those living room electronic photo albums. OooooOOOoohh. OK, well, my parents might like one. But I don't, because I'm used to real technology.

Incredibly disappointing. I will not be buying this product... and I had the credit card ready and waiting this morning!

??? Exactly who were you going to give your credit card number to?
NO ONE thought it would be available today.

Oh come on everybody this is the coolest thing i've ever seen.

can't believed they actually made something this out there.

I would agree with you if Apple had not said themselves that this was a netbook killer.

Wouldn't have to all multi touch. Could easily have the onscreen keyboard just as this large iphone does. Funny, i use my Mac book to go online, play music, do email, etc but it does it with OS X and not a iphone OS. There are lots of us out here that would pay for a OS X touch pad but won't waste money on yet another iphone variation.

Huh?

I'm not sure why it took so long and the personal involvement of Steve Jobs to come up with this. It doesn't look like there is much new here.

I think it will eventually be a success - when a better OS version comes out, when it adds iSight, etc.

But it really is a third device. You still need a main computer and a device that will fit your pocket - iPhone or Ipod Touch.

I might be interested in one if my main computer was an iMac, but my main computer is my Black MacBook. So I don't know why I would need this.

You just don't get it, do you. This is a kindle that browses the web in full colour, plays video and lets you check your email. Apple already make the best desktops and notebooks in the world, this is a NEW device. Open your mind. A pro work tool would not retail at $499. This is a simple device designed to fulfil the basic needs of normal home computer users, not IT professionals. Check your email, browse the web, play music, play the occasional game, read a book/magazine. That's all it does, that's all it's designed to do. That's the point. If you're comparing it to a notebook, desktop or fully functional OS tablet device, you've missed the point.

I wanna sit on the sofa with a glass of wine in one hand, this on my lap while i read, or watch a movie, or browse the net, or catch up on my email. That is all. It will do it well.
