I just have two questions.
What the *ELL does Apple have against multitasking and a front facing camera???

Multitasking isn't much to ask for, flash isn't much to ask for.

Sayeth one who wouldn't know how accomplish that within consumer acceptable power restraints if his life depended on it.
And don't point to the Nexus. The fact that the biggest app to come out of it is one for turning off the tasks that are crashing/draining the damned phone says it all.

whats the point? it wont even fit in your pocket.
as if you'd ever get that out on a bus or whatever to listen to music... more hassle than its worth, my mbp and iphone anyday please..
having said that i can see loads of people jumping at this just for the coolness factor

That's just it. It's not a new device. Its just a larger version of ones that exist.
Or a really stripped down, dumbed down version of a Mac.

Mean while... at Microsoft...

This is a product unlike a smartphone or a notebook computer that you are going to have to spend some time convincing yourself that you really need it.

Notebook computers were revolutionary because they allowed full powered (or as close as you can get to it) computing on the go. iPods were revolutionary because they allowed you to carry your whole music collection and other media in your pocket. Smart phones were revolutionary because they allowed you to merge your media player, PDA and phone into one device.

Now why is the iPad revolutionary? It doesn't really bring any new ideas to the table. It's basically a big iPod Touch. If you have the money to burn I say go ahead and buy one. It will be a fun toy to play with, but if you already own a nice compact notebook computer and a smart phone I don't really see the point. It doesn't really replace a smart phone and it doesn't really replace a notebook. About the only thing it replaces is an iPod Touch, but you can't carry it in your pocket so you will still need one of those!

Okay I changed my mind. This thing is a complete dud! A bigger dud than the Apple TV and Macbook Air combined.

does no one give a damn that this thing still can't download things off the internet to the device?

For most people, the answer is no, considering that downloading from the internet is generally about as save as visiting a Tijuana cat house.

where have i heard this before?

"so what? its an mp3 player! you know how many of those there are!"

"its an ipod with a phone in it, honestly, i have a phone, who needs this?"

Every new Apple product the Apple boards do this. I swear some of the stupidest people on earth hang out here. And i know it, and here i am typing to you. Makes me king of the stupid....

Who would want this? Well lets see, how many kindles has amazon sold? and how many iphones/ipod touches has Apple sold? So now we have something that gets all the best of both? Going to be a huge flop then isn't it?

You know who wants one? Every college student with half a brain. If i can write docs, take notes, surf, get email, get cheap eversions of text books (i hope the book reader has a simple annotation system like preview) and the battery lasts all day and it plays music and movies and weighs far less than a laptop and is cheaper than a macbook?!?!? Are you people really this dumb? This is a college student dream come true! Oh maybe not the students who hang out on this web site, but the rest? Slam-dunk!

"It doesn't multitask!"

OMG say it isn't so! You can't take notes and play on facebook at the same time?!? ZOMG!!!!!11!!!eleventyone!!1

They are, as i pointed out with iPhone, Touch, & iPod before them, going to be minting money with these things. And the keyboard dock? Brilliant. My wife already asked for one for the kitchen just seeing the dock and knowing it ran the recipe apps she has on her iPhone. And the new apps that will come to this.....

Apple is going to have all the money soon, and destroy our entire economy. All products now come in two flavors: What Apple makes and everyone wants, and what others copy from Apple and people without taste/money settle for.

IMVHO Anyone who knows what multitasking is won't be the target market for this device.

The people who do buy it will care more about being seen with it than what it won't do.

I've come up with my own revolutionary product.

It does all the same stuff and way more. IT runs a full OSX system, has a built in high definition screen and a mechanical keyboard that folds over the screen when not in use to create a protective case. It has much more than twice the speed and capacity, video camera and loads of connectivity.

It'll cost only a few hundred quid more and It'll be called the imackbook.

Agreed, even the iPod touch and iPhone should be able to do that, they have wifi after all.

I agree the iPhone should have this. Can't believe they missed that one again with ipad... Mind u I'm still reeling from the shock of being so underwhelmed today!
To access my network on iPhone I setup a web server on my desktop and create create aliases to point to my iTunes library. I can then FTP in using safari. Works a treat but is a complex fudge. How hard would it be to give me and app that just streams from iTunes. Like remote but plays content on my iPhone unread of through appletv or iTunes on my desktop... May as well sigh for the moon... :(

Why not reinvent OS X? If multitouch is the future of everything with a screen, they should have gotten on that. The iPhone OS is just not nearly as awesome as they want it to be.

Also, a few pragmatic people have mentioned some of this, but:
1) WILL IT PRINT? Or not? This is pretty basic in the world of computing. The iPhone doesn't because nobody makes documents on it. People make documents on this. It has to print. If it needs an expensive adapter to print, you have cow-pies between your ears.
2) TAKING NOTES. HOW? With no stylus, you have to type. Fine, at least it's quiet. But, will I have to look down in my lap or on my desk? It's actually better to use a laptop in that case.
3) CAMERA? What about all those patent things about cameras embedded in the display itself? Is that why we don't see one?
4) REDUNDANT, MUCH? And the most blatant, egregious problem with this device -- it does the old things in slightly new ways. I have a calendar app on my iphone, which is easier to carry and buzzes for alarms. Mail, same deal. Or it'll be easier to type on my MacBook. In many ways, this looks like a downgraded MacBook Air. For example, what's with touting that the Facebook app works? On a screen of this size, you sure as hell would just use Safari and browse that way. Why even bother porting the Facebook app? Because you are getting carried away, that's why.

It's like those living room electronic photo albums. OooooOOOoohh. OK, well, my parents might like one. But I don't, because I'm used to real technology.

Likely prints, but they definitely should have mentioned that one. I believe there are iphone apps that print if it does not do so natively.

Didnt see anything about a stylus, but they also didnt make a big deal about text books which is where I think this is most relevant. You can, however, draw on the powerpoint slides so the functionality seems to be there. I believe there are styli (styluses) for the iphone so it seems that again the functionality exists and perhaps will be left to individual apps for use.

There is no camera. isight would have taken this thing to the next level!

I also think that as apps are developed, this thing will become more and more compelling. Photoshop, MS Office, drawing applications, etc. In their desire to keep this thing secret, they left out a lot of the content providers.

OK, all day long I have thought the iPad was somewhat lame. Now my kid's old core duo 13" macbook needs a new battery. He mainly uses it for surfing (school project research and youtube) and videos (TV/movies via iTunes).

Do I spend the $129 for a new battery or shell out another $370 on top of that for an iPad?

(Even time I think I'm out of Apple, Jobs pulls me back in. I hate him and I love him.)

So it'll be like iphone/touch. Any of my media (films/episodes) that I er havn't acquired through itunes wont play on it. No quicktime/vlc etc..unless I convert it to bloody mp4 or whatever. That's a complete downer for me. What a shame

Wow just like all Apple software. Why did you expect differently????

Why don't you use Apple TV and MacBook Air as an example?

Maybe, but there are cheaper alternatives for what iPad can do, so why would anyone prefer iPad over other stuff?

Are there? Care to name them? I'm talking about a device that doesn't have the nightmares associated with a full OS and simply perform a few tasks well, intuitively for a non tech-savvy end user. There's the kindle and err..... What else?

I was thinking about the docks as well. Right now I have a MacBook Air that I move around the kitchen, bedroom, and living room for web browsing and email. I'm confident the iPad will easily take it's place and work better for what I need.

This is a true piece of crap, seriously and being an enthusiast pc user, it really annoys me how Apple fan boys defend every product Apple releases, when its bad its bad, there are tons of Fail products.. This is useless and expensive at least for what you can do on it. Its literally a big ipod touch, thats it, I can do everything steve jobs mentioned on my ipod touch, except maybe read PDF'S? Oh wait theres probably an App on ipod that already does that..

This is useless, no multi-tasking, no real OS.. IF it was running Snow Leopard then I would've been impressed..
