Alright, here's my major problem with all of this. I understand a lot of people are pissed off that everyone seems to be automatically bitching because their "expectations were too high", but Apple shouldn't tell me that this thing is supposed to be the Apple solution to a netbook when it can't even do what a netbook can do. I have a dell mini 10v with a 160GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM running an N280 Intel Atom processor and OSX Snow Leopard. All of that, OS and new RAM included totaled less than $400. I can tether it with my iPhone and get online anywhere, I can run SEVERAL applications at the same time, and I can even use Photoshop on it. Not to mention that it has 3 USB ports, VGA out, and an SD card slot without the need for any adapters. If a product is touted as revolutionary, it is not inappropriate to expect it to be so, especially when Jobs has been quoted as saying this is the most important thing he has ever worked on. Most important money making scheme, maybe. I understand why there is no flash, Apple wants to sell you stuff, but that in no way excuses it. Sorry Apple, you missed the boat on this one, and I will be right there, when my uninformed friends want to buy an iPad, to tell them that I'll hack a mini 10v for them for less, and that they will be much more happy with it. I feel this product is a slap in the face to anyone who actually expects revolutionary technology. And don't get me started on the 1GHz processor, what a joke!

I highlighted the things I find quite silly.

1) The 9.7" touchscreen is the most expensive part of the display. It is NOT cheap. If you can tell me another product that uses that large of a high-quality touchscreen display, do let me know. And the screens on the HP TouchSmart PCs are not IPS (they invert colors when not off center).

2) Believing everything you read on the Internet is what lead you to be disappointed that the iPad was not "revolutionary" to you.

3) The fact that you seem to think that Gigahertz really matters means that you are still stuck with 2004 Intel thinking. A 600Mhz ARM Cortex A8 in the iPhone 3GS is FAR FAR FAR better performing than the first Intel Pentium III 1Ghz chip from 2000. It's like trying to compare gas mileage in a Prius and a Hummer and saying the Hummer wins because of its 40 gallon tank.

I think after a couple of revisions it has the potential to be very good. In fact when i next come to upgrade my Macbook in a couple of years I would seriously consider getting a iMac and just have the tablet to use portably e.g to take to library or lectures. It in fact offers me a much cheaper option because i get more for my money from the desktop and the ipad will give me everything i need portably.

I agree with ya. :D You gotta tell how u got the dell mini 10v running snow leopard.

There is an excellent write up on gizmodo. If you google hackintosh dell mini 10v it should be one of the first things to pop up. Meklort.com is a great resource too. This gentlemen wrote a fantastic program called netbook installer, usually shortened to NBI. For more information check out mydellmini.com.

Apple is the one calling it revolutionary.. it has nothing to do with internet rumors.

Multitasking isn't much to ask for, flash isn't much to ask for.

I'm disappointed, I was hoping it would be running OSX, and not a OS like the iphone has.. this is basically a large ipod touch.. =/

My main questions (so far):

1. Is there a tab key on the keyboard? Maybe I missed it. I'm a writer and need a tab key to work with documents in Pages.

2. Can I play a game on my iPod Touch, transfer it to the iPad and play on there when I'm home, then transfer it back to the iPod when I go out?

3. When I read an ebook, can I tap a word and see the definition? That would be one of the biggest advantages of an ebook in my opinion.

IPAD or IPOD Touch 4.0

I was really disappointed to hear that this was Apple's next BIG technological change. Really, is it a tablet without running multiple applications in the background or even being able to write on it. Using the Iphone 3.0 software excludes you from using software that you currently use on OSX. I thought this would be a replacement for using a netbook. Really? Are you serious? I cant get anything done with this thing. No mouse, keyboard optional. Try remote desktop on this thing or ssh for that matter.

On a scale of 1-10, I give it a big .001. It's just a glorified IPOD Touch!

Signed.

Don't get me wrong. I want one. But, this device is no netbook without multi-tasking. That said I'd probably sell my Dell Mini 9 and keep my iPhone and MBP for a full range of mobile options.

Sorry, if I was misunderstood. Basically I'm in your boat. Just count me into the camp - I DON'T NEED A TABLET.

But, well, it's terrific for the target group. Daddys will browse the net, while mommy is watching Desperate Housewives. Though distracted by the net, he doesn't offend his wife with wearing earphones.

That's what it's all about. Catering the target group. All those mid-50s will drool over this stuff.

And the nerds will still whine about how their hackintosh netbooks are way superior, that they want their xMac Mini Tower and that OS X has to be licensed to other vendors. History repeats itself - don't you think.

And while I'm posting this stuff and my wife is watching TV I come to think: Damn, with an iPad this stuff would be much more convenient. :D:D:D And I'm just in the 30s.:)

so if it uses 3G to connect to the internet, why can't it be paired with a bluetooth headset or wired headphones and used as a phone as well...? may as well since has the functionality...

This thing needs multitasking, a GPS chip and USB. You have to buy a USB adapter to hook up a digital camera? That's just dumb. Put a cheap little USB port on the thing standard for doing that and let people use their own keyboards!

This thing has potential, but it just isn't there yet... I'm sure some will find it useful in its current form though

My friend, Jobs is the person that called this thing revolutionary, and revolutionary it is not. I do understand the difference between the the way processors function now and the way processors functioned in 04. I also know that the current Atom processors pack much more of a wallop than this Apple branded processor if the iPad isn't going to be able to handle multitasking from 3rd party apps. As for the screen, I don't give a rats ass how nice the screen is if it won't easily display content that I didn't purchase from apple. I am not going to spend 2 weeks converting all my AVIs to MP4. The fact of the matter is that the iPad is anything but revolutionary.

i have been tossing up for the last 6weeks whether or not to buy a netbook, and whether or not to try the hackintosh. it seems like a plausible option at the moment.

Big picture this is a good product, but definitely didnt live up to the hype. Apple is always good about not including functions that are half baked. So I appreciate that everything in this ipad actually works (hopefully).

Multi-tasking is overated, but not unnecessary. They should come up with a way to fix this issue. Perhaps apps under a certain size are allowed to run in the background (I dont really know how all that stuff works, but it seems that there is an equitable way to accomplish this without seriously compromising battery life). I think allowing just Panadora to run with othe rapps would address 85% of the complaints.

I really wanted a front facing camera for video chat. That would have made this a serious business tool. Imagine shared screen video chats where you can walk someone through a document, presentation or a numbers model.

Undoubtedly there is some functionality that has not yet been shown. Watching some of the videos revealed some cool multitouch stuff with photos. This is a good product, but lacked a "one more thing". I do think this is the future of computing and Apple is slowly walking us forward while holding our hands.......

The 3.2 SDK is greyed out for me - I'm a UK iPhone developer. Is the iPad development kit US only?:mad:

EDIT: sorry, I'm being stupid. Signed the new licence agreement and now it will let me in :)

yep, disappointing..

it has just unrestricted some things from the iPhone like a f++cking keyboard. software is the same, why not allow us to use the keyboard with iphones like 3 yrs ago??? then some of us would b able to do work on it on the go.

for the price, i will just buy a new macbook, after factoring in storage space, screen size, ergonomics, the macbook is waaaaay better value.

i would buy this for my kids though for sketching on and maybe the wife if she could do the gay flash games on it...

meh

All software so likely over time...

It's incredibly simple, just make sure you get the Dell Mini 10v and not the Dell Mini 10. As it stands, the new 10 (not the 10v) is not fully functional when it comes to graphics. The 10v is super easy to hack and fully functional. I believe they are about to phase the 10vs out, but am not sure. I would recommend checking out the refurbished 10vs, they're super cheap.

I might be the second--if it can replace my Kindle as an eReader (and I mean without too much eyestrain if I read for a couple of hours) and do more.

I am experiencing, like many people, the lowering of expectations, however.

Actual Apple products almost never live up to rumored Apple products. That's really not Apple's fault! It's not like they promised you something and delivered something else.
