And it performs like it. Watch how many times they hammer on those icons before anything happens. At first I thought it was a non-functional model.

The "Apple quality" you want comes with a higher price tag.

Exactly, which is why I'd have no problem paying a good amount for a device like this, but with Apple quality.

My point is: look at what they have done for a device that retails for $109.

The iPad is lacking so much. I was willing to put down up to $1,000 on this device TODAY. As it is, they are not getting a sale from me.

No flash = I can live with
No camera = Very disappointed, this would be the perfect Skype device
No multitasking = No sale.

If OS4 brings multitasking and there are some killer apps written for it, then I may reconsider at that point. This may be great for notes at work. Except that it has a rounded back, so it will never sit completely still on a desk so a case may be a must to keep it it from wobbling.

I was really disappointed to hear that this was Apple's next BIG technological change.

and I was a tad nervous when Steve banged on about being a mobile devices company. I just hope they don't concentrate on dumbed down devices like this, at the expense of pro machines and software (Logic et al). I know its unlikely, but Steve did make a big point of the "mobile devices business" thing.

Seeing this makes me want a Macbook Air with a touch screen that flips around if you want to use it without hard keys. Like the old Trashiba tablet I had for a very brief time, but executed much better.

Look honey, I magnified my iPod Touch!

Is this product trying to fill some void that doesn't exist? Only people I can see buying this are iPhone users who are trying to convince themselves they need it. There is no legit use for this iPad. I'll stick with the Iphone thankyaverymuch.

Re: Camera

Interesting in the simulator, the native contacts app has the option to take a photo. Wonder if this is just a holdover from the iPhone or if the final shipping product will support a camera of some kind?

does no one give a damn that this thing still can't download things off the internet to the device? keeping this iphone os was a huge mistake on apple's part. it's just inconvenient to carry around when you have your iphone that can do just about every damn thing that ipad can do, thus making this ipad nearly irrelevant. Especially in terms of "mobility" like a laptop.

now, we're going to have to deal with small upgrades of ipads aka iphone's that really don't matter.

ok, here's what you do apple: you don't just rush a product because this is the year of the 'tablet', and then you make a similar touch screen device that is mac os x compatible. Then your hype will be appropriate for the product.

why not just remake all macbooks imacs etc. running mac os x to start running iphone os. The device is clearly big enough to run a watered down mac os x substantial enough for people to be pleased with it.

they just took the lazy way out in my opinion and just made a huge iphone instead of reinventing os x to be touch enabled.

Welp, I'm building a macbook pro tablet. For all the illustrators, design & graphics people, who found the modbooks overpriced & underdelivered.

Just bought a new CNC machine & a pile of 6061 & mahogany. I'll show you guys when it's done & figure out how to make an inexpensive conversion kit...

I like the iPad for what it does, though I wish it had an iChat cam & could act as an external monitor for a workstation... perhaps rev.2.

True multi-tasking is very over rated for such a device.

If music can play behind everything, like an iPt, fine. But, a calculator that multitasks would be nice. Other than that, I can't imagine what is so important that you can't switch between the applications, if the applications launch fast enough to not be noticed.

Not at all.

All I want from the device is to be able to chat with someone on AIM, while I browse the web.

Doesn't look like it can even do that  Maybe to a degree with Push Notifications and constant switching of apps, but that's not ideal at all.

I have to admit I was a little disappointed at first, but after watching the demo on Apple I might be sold if it get's a Flash plug-in.

Remember how many people were disappointed after Apple's announcement of the original iPod :apple:

I'm sure it has been said multiple times in this thread, but...

No Multitasking = FAIL

I was really hoping Apple would deliver something to replace my Dell Mini 9 running OS X 10.5, but they failed. If I can't run iChat, Safari, and Mail at the same time, it is worthless. No matter what else it can do.

Missing feature for me that cause it to be a non-buy for me, which seem to be the common complaints:

Multitasking. Why not add multitasking, why not add the ability to go split screen with apps. Why not introduce a way to flip back and forth between open apps to allow for ease of working between multiple apps. Not being able to flip between at least 2 apps is just a bust. The way I would make it work is one finger on the screen and a press of the home button opens up an application expose of running apps, 2 fingers on the screen and the home button returns to the home screen and keeps the application running, and just pressing the home button closes the app. I think it'd work.

The front facing camera is one that I am extremely confused about. The thing can play 720p video so it should be able to record video good enough to allow for video chatting. Add iChat to the mix and apple may have a great business tool for those on the go. (not to mention third party possibilities) My only guess here is that a camera would ruin their modo of 'no matter how you use it, it fits you' cause the camera would limit the ways you could hold it while doing video.

Flash I could care less about as HTML5 seems to be rolling forward (youtube offers HTML5 option now on videos in testing).

I tend to fall most in line with Engadget's review:

* No front-facing camera for videoconferencing is somewhat baffling to me - I don't care about the ability to take photos with an iPod, but on an Internet device such as this it doesn't make sense. What was Apple's objection, that folks would have to hold it up to use the camera?

* No Flash support - this has been hashed and rehashed on the iPhone/iPod Touch threads, but on a device this big, with a claimed battery life as long as it supposedly has, really? No Flash?

* No multitasking - I agree with others that the screen size only limits you to one application at a time, but there's plenty of things I'd like to have happen in the background while I'm using my one application. Hopefully iPhone OS 4 will alleviate some of this pain.

I'm interested, but right now my tricked out Dell Mini 9 (which, with the upgrades I purchased costs about the same as a 64GB iPad) runs real OS X with none of these limitations with not too much more weight and size added.

As a college student I would want the ability to run the textbook app (iBook?), Pages, and Safari. The "no multitasking" is the biggest letdown for me.

So much for me getting one. :(

What do you need to do that requires this? If - when you swap between apps - each keeps its 'place' - what difference does it make?

Did you want to be able to have all 3 open *at once* - and view all three *at once*? Or do you want them to "stay in memory" when you switch?

The first isn't happening - for that, get a Laptop. The second, is really just not required as long as transitions are instant and the current state is maintained...

well, it's just predicted already before. isn't it? there is no surprise at all. it's just like bigger version of iphone. I don't see the reason to buy it yet? my macs are just enough (or my iphone). but it will be girl magnet if you buy. it looks attractive and sleek. pricing point is OK. I don't know what to say more. it's NOT exciting, surprising..... I didn't even watch special event this morning because I didn't have expectation on new thing around this time.

Printing from your iPad

I would hope that it is designed to be able to print from iwork directly to a printer connected either via network (wireless or LAN) or via a USB printer connected to the Mac/PC. Anything else would be rather cumbersome.

I am thinking that Apple will be reluctant to provide printing resources since we are moving to be a greener and more paperless society. With a device like this you really should see the need to print diminish.

I don't mean to sound like a tree-hugger, but this device has gotta have an impact on the paper industry. I know I'll be checking to see if I can get an ebook version first before getting paperback.

My .02.

Yawn......

So its a larger iPod touch? Doesn't run OS x, no camera, no iChat.
Boring. I'm not into playing games or downloading time wasting apps that do little but entertain. No multi-tasking.
A real disappointment. Would it have been so difficult to take the display on a Macbook and make that touch sensitive and have a real Mac computer as a slate instead of a toy that shows pictures?

So do just that - switch between iBook, pages and safari. This is a ten inch screen you can't interact with all three apps at the same time, and you wouldn't want to have the three windows side by side open at the same time, so just switch between them. Simples/
