I'd really like to propose a moratorium on all Verizon iPhone/iPad rumours. Unless there's a named source. Like Walter Kronkite.
This is exactly why it won't go to Verizon. It's possible that they're using a multi protocol chipset, but if someone does a teardown on day 1 and finds out it's not, I wouldn't hold my breath.
Keep in mind, the whole reason the 3G is taking longer is to get it through the FCC. At the very least it'll be delayed on Verizon, but I really have a hard time seeing them go through the hassle for one country.
Let's say they sell 2 million in year 1 with half in the US. What would be the incremental business gained by catering to verizon? Specifically the people who will not buy one on ATT, but would on verizon. 100K? 200K? Probably not much more. Would they really go through all of that work and separate manufacturing for a 10% increase in sales?
It's not like there's number porting issues or that they're locked into a contract on another network like with phones...
I'm done now...
...Oh wait- For those who say they will never buy one unless it goes to Verizon, but would buy one on verizon day one, I'm highly suspect of most of your claims (though I can see specific situations, like no coverage with one, but coverage with the other).
I think we'll all be dead before they give us free 3G on iPads with our iPhones. So, that's why we jailbreak our iPhones and create our own mobile hotspot with them. When Steve said that the AT&T pricing was remarkable on the iPad data plan at $15 and $30 per month rather than $60, sorry, but that is for full fledge usb dongle internet service on a laptop, not a low use item like the iPad.
You want remarkable AT&T:
a. All iPhone customers paying a data plan get iPad 3G coverage included in what they already pay!
b. All iPhone customers can get WiFi only model and tether their iPhones.
Unless one of those situations was announced, then it's not remarkable.
Give me Pay as you go refill model with months to use it up or I'll take a WiFi only but no way I give AT&T another $15 or $30 a month.
How I understood the keynote was that Apple had gotten special pricing from AT&T for 3G service for the iPad but it didn't seem like it was limited to AT&T. Am I wrong?
I'm surprised you even know what it is.I don't trust anything from Fox.
It's not about the SIM cards. Verizon use a completely different wireless radio technology, incompatible with AT&T/T-Mo and the rest of the world. It's not limited to AT&T, it's just Verizon don't support SIM cards, therefor you can't use it on Verizon.

Ditto.
We need a law in the US denying exclusivity of one carrier over others with phones and whatnot. People should be allowed to choose.
Why would Apple create a separate lineup for just 1 country? Apple is a company of that interested in high margins, efficiency/clean lineup, and market share. Apple is not "sticking" with AT&T, it's just that AT&T uses the wireless technology that is also used by the rest of the world, and in the US, AT&T has more marketshare than T-Mobile. Besides, technically UMTS has a higher bandwidth than CDMA, although coverage is obviously a different story. It's just my thoughts (NOT RUMORS)...
But Apple could really stick it to AT&T by rolling out an iPad for Verizon with webcam. With an ad something like "Their network can support the extra bandwidth that video needs!"
Why would Apple create a iPad/iPhone for Verizon cdma? The question is why wouldn't they?, The US is the #1 market for iPhones, and I hear many local people in my area whining/wishing the iPhone came onto Verizon, or that they would drop ATT altogether and switch. Apple would sell them like hotcakes, and perhaps it would be compatible with Sprint too. The consumer wants to make their own decision on what carrier to choose, mostly determined on coverage strength in the area they live in. That being said, ATT should not be the sole carrier for Apple devices. Maybe they should listen to the old addage: "The customer is always right."
