erm...
Twice as fast is 100% faster as you said. 100%+100%.
200% faster is only 3x as fast. 100%+200%

YOU'RE 3 times as fast!

erm, ok, fine you're right. geez i hate math.

i was just proud to know the 100% thing.

Why are people saying older iPhone hardware slowed down with each new software revision? I have an original iPhone and original iPod touch and BOTH run BETTER now with 3.1.3 than they did on their original 1.x releases.

And you know with Vista and now 7 I don't think I've ever had one actual OS crash.

+1 to both those posts. Im a Mac, but windows does not crash. windows 7 is just as solid for every day use as SL.

Three of my Win7 x64 systems combined have had one BSOD in the last 9 months. The fourth gets one or two a week - so I'm trying to find the hardware/driver fault.
The reliability monitor under Windows 7 is a much nicer presentation than the Vista one.

The last Windows related crash was from some Flash issues and the ATI driver back in December 2009.

Specs are irrelevant. It's how it performs that matters, and from the reviews so far it performs really well.

Yes. But speed boost by spec improvement is what El Jobso taught us with iPhone 3GS.

That's why Apple has never announced how much RAM does the iPad have.

Webpages with many images don't finish loading on iPad. Evensome pages on Giz this is due to the small amount of RAM. I'm thinking of returning the iPad myself.

Heavy content webpages aren't loaded into RAM only. They are cached on the disk (swap file / virtual memory).

Usually modern browser compare the local files with the one from server, to speed things up, they use local one if it's the same file version.

And for mobile safari, they are drawn on top of OpenGL surface. So it needs minimum (or more) of screen resolution in VRAM.

And you know with Vista and now 7 I don't think I've ever had one actual OS crash.

3 Vista computers, two for 4 years one for 1 year, an xp that I am not even sure we didn't have before 2000, and a 7 I've had since december. No OS crashes.

I would doubt a ram upgrade anytime soon. The PS3 and X-Box 360 only have 512mb of ram. It truly is all about optimization when it comes to closed operating systems. Could we all benefit from more ram, of course but I would say in this particular device it isn't all that necessary. We will just have to see how it runs after multitasking is available.

Personally I'd rather see a better video card thrown in to the iPad. Webcam I think is a must still shocked it's missing that. Oh well there is always version 2.0 next year.

Wait for the next iphone OS, it won't be so blazing fast anymore. The iPhone and iPhone 3G used to be blazing fast when on 1.1.4 and 2.2.1. they aren't anymore. The iPad will be just like the Original iphone in 3 years. The Original iPhone was so slow when I upgraded to 3.0. It wasn't even fun to use it anymore. iPod took 8 seconds to open. I got a replacement iPhone, same thing. Even when set up as a new iPhone. Sure Apple could optimize 3.0 to run on it smoothly, but they want you to get the 3GS. Apple will do the same with the iPad. Just wait and see.

Um, what are you talking about? I own an original, 16GB iPod Touch. It is beginning to show its age (mostly in comparison to modern stuff), but it still runs great. I have the most recent iPhone OS on it (3.x), and it runs a TON faster than it did with original software. Not compared to the new ones, sure, but compared to its original software, it just flies.

I agree the software on the iPad does seem stinted. Looking at the screen shots of games for the iPad, and seeing people actually playing with it, it astounds me how incredibly FAST the thing is with what is essentially last year's hardware. The Nexus One has better specs than this, but the iPad is just astoundingly fast. This is why I'm a mac; not the hardware (which is pretty amazing in terms of construction), but the software. So incredible.

I don't have money for the iPad, but the second or third generation should have incredible specs. Right now Apple may get away with lesser specs on paper, but once competitors start to come out, they'll need to keep up, so their software should be paired with good hardware. Equaling awesome.

THIS THING, IN ITS CURRENT FORM WILL NOT EVEN REACH THE PREDICTED 8-10 MILLION SHIPPING FIGURES THIS YEAR.

But if I'm wrong, I will leave Macrumors in January for good.

I'm pretty sure it will. Whether you think its a great device or a crappy one.

Shoot, I almost bought a 16Gb WiFi one for $500 just for the hell of it. I don't need one, and $500 for a college student isn't pocket change, but I really almost bought one just so I could say that I had an iPad when it first came out.

"Boom!" - Steve Jobs
The hardware acceleration under the 10.1 Beta didn't sit well with the ATI 9.11/9.12 drivers. It's resolved in Catalyst 10.x but I fixed it reverted back to a stable version of Flash.

Windows itself is rather rock solid. It's just the applications and hardware that cause problems. Now that I'm back on FireFox, from Chrome, it has an annoying memory leak. Safari under Windows is a joke as well. I guess it's back to Chrome.

Lol...so much for that optimized/efficient OS build

All that means is the app got sent the "you're low on memory" message. Normally developers adapt by freeing up memory, etc. Some pop up an alert.

but this is common on iPhones, too. Over time background processes (safari sessions, etc.) eat up the memory.

It sucks.

More memory would have been very nice, if for no other reason than preventing apps from having to save state and reload (like safari does).

Complaints!

Why not at least 1GB? then you have room to make amazing future software. Oh wait... they want me to spend $699 now,and $699 next year. i'm guessing this is going to be like the iPod touch and iPhone. The next major release of software will slow it down, so we have to buy a new pad each year. They use small ****** specs. Really only 16GB storage? Give us more Apple. For $499, lower your profit margins. Now I kinda want a MBP with NEW Intel CPU, and NEW graphics. Apple seems to get away with slower, outdated, cheaper hardware than their competitors, and charge a premium for it. Thats what I HATE about Apple.

The old family Dell dimension 4550 we purchased in 2003 had 256MB of RAM. We maxed it out to 1GB later on.

You know a lot of the complaints about the iPad are pretty valid... But you know I used to be a PC guy and I used to build quite a few high end water-cooled ones etc etc... Here's where I'm at: When I used and built PC's I spent thousands upon thousands of dollars just trying to keep up with the latest hardware out there because you just wanted to be faster and faster!!! That was the only fun part of the other guys... The reason for this is because of the software; and you know what I'm talking about! You had to do a reinstall and baby sit your PC day in and day out to keep it runnin' like day one. My point is this, I finally bought my first iMac of four and I can't tell you how much time and money I save using Apple's products! As long as Apple continues to do what there they are doing I'll newer touch the other guy again, period! I think that when your are a true Apple fan you see the point of not worrying about the specs or hardware as much because the products work most off the time like the tools that they are supposed to be, and quite enjoyable at the same time! And by the way, as long as it's affordable, the third generation iPad will be definitely a notebook killer for most people! I wouldn't complain! You don't have to buy one, but if you did like me, you did because you know it's the best technology all around on the planet for the geeks that we are!!! Call it as
you will...

Apple crippled the iPad on purpose

Guys, isn't it obvious why it only has 256 MB of RAM? It's not about price, profit margin or functionality. If they added more RAM, it would compete with the MacBook Air. Apple knew dang well the iPad could cause lost MacBook sales, so they had to limit the damage.

Remember, we're still in the honeymoon phase. The iPad is still all about possibility, not reality.

The real problem with 256 MB of RAM is for games. Specifically, future games. At 1024x768, the textures and buffers need a lot more RAM.

It's 5x the resolution of the iPhone, and that eats RAM. How much RAM does a developer use for graphics? Only 100 MB? What do you have left for the game itself? You can see already those "HD" iPad games are not HD at all.

Essentially, Apple's decision makes the iPad obsolete before it ever went on sale. It's still great for surfing, gadgets, etc., but expect to shell out for version 2 next year (with more RAM).

For a $1 a day...

While others opt out of this generation of iPad, in hopes for more speed, memory and other features, I'll be enjoying my 64GB iPad. I'll use it a year, and sell for $400 or so, which means I'll have spent about $1 a day to use it while others decry the lack of what they want and go without.

Sure I would like more, but I have a smile on my face as i type this post on the iPad. :)
