here we go again, what with all the moaners on here. Yes I bought an ipad and yes I know it will be updated at some stage and mine wont be the latest, BUT does it still do everything it said it would do on the box when I bought it? YES!!!!!

get over it

what difference if it gets updated sooner or later? will you ipad stop working? if its new you can always sell it at a good price.

Funny you say that, given how misleading the markerting was around the 4G when the iPad launched. So to answer your question around doing everything it said on the box, NO!!!

Sceptical about this claim. Revised edition a mere 3-4 months before the next iPad? Very suspect.

iPad mini yes.

Revised 3rd gen iPad, I can only see being released when it becomes the 16gb basic version when iPad 4 releases.

A revised 3rd generation iPad released this month could mean that the fourth generation will come out in the fall of 2013.

Assuming that all of the iPad mini talk is more than just wishful thinking, I think I'm inclined to trust the parts leaks that purport to show the mini with a micro-sim slot and cellular antenna cutouts.

Just seems unlikely that Apple would keep the iPad mini WiFi only. Having a budget version sub $200 to compete with Nexus7 and Kindle Fire makes sense. Having a premium version starting at $329 with 3G/4G also makes sense.

That's a lie. Apple have no question asked 14 day opened box return policy. I had a scratch on mine and it was returned with no question asked.

A lie, think it through....

What if the complaint was made on the 15th day ;) And that 14 day policy is in play for items bought at the apple store. Pick one up at another reatailer and that policy is not valid.

The fact is, the 4G markerting around the world for the iPad was a lie. And there was no need for it, just state it works in x countries.

I think there will be an iPad Mini version with mobile data. The Mini is all about portability, so it would make no sense to restrict it to Wifi only...

I am responding to the quote itself. "A few days later", "Apple store", "Apple won't return my money".

The problem I have is that the staff at the apple store is not adequately trained. For us who frequent MacRumors and tech blogs, we knew about the different frequencies for LTE. Believe it or not, a lot of staff in the apple stores do not.

Just like the iPhone 5, a lot of people who purchased grey market iPhones in China or HK imported from other places will be surprised when their phones can't connect to 4G either.

Apple has no idea what the heck the carriers are doing with their networks. They try their best to cram as much technology into their devices. When the iPad was launched, UK doesn't even have a 4G network.

Speaking of which..."4G" isn't even a correct term, its not a standard. As far as I know, UK has HSPA+ enabled so the speed is close to what people were calling 4G a year ago.

Way to dump on everyone in the UK that just bought a new iPad, buying in to all of that "spectrum is fragmented, won't be available for a few years yet" jargon.

Thanks, Apple!

I'm sure it will be better than that... Highly likely that any 'new' LTE compatible iPad will only work with part of the future LTE spectrum (and not band 7/20 - think the new iPhone 5 only working with EE or anyone they sell spectrum to).

Means we can have a new new iPad next year that is compatible with all UK LTE frequencies! This is the main reason i'm holding out for the next iPhone update!

I don't need 4G on the iPad Mini, but I do need at least 3G. No 3G means no GPS and compass which means de facto no maps. It also means unreliable iClouud access, and obviously, unreliable web browsing and email.

Bam, the 3 things I really wanted from this device.

+1

I would definitely want 3G on the iPad Mini as well. I have never found Wifi hotspots to be very usable in the UK, but then maybe I am just using them wrong :).

In addition I wouldn't bother updating to a refreshed iPad 3 but instead wait for a new iPad with significant changes.

Here in the UK we don't really have a widespread 3G coverage, let alone 4G. The carriers that are going to be offering 4G will be just cherry picking the big cities, the rest of us will be without 4G coverage.

By the time we get anywhere near the same amount of 4G coverage that we have 3G coverage, I would expect we'll be on the iPhone 8/iPad 6

Its Apples choice if they do not include a compass and GPS as neither of those things require cell coverage in the traditional use. Its a shame the iPad WiFi does not include GPS.

Well thats a different matter entirely which Apple didnt adress well. Them updating a current model? Theres some imac and mac pro users that wish they would do the same.

So far, that business model has made a lot of profit, and has made many, many billions of dollars. But you are welcome to start your own company if you think you can do better.

dont get cocky sport, you were ranting yesterday how the ipad mini is a terrible idea

this is the Grauniad, so it's a load of blolkocs.

FTFY

It's because of Brits and bad teeth. This goes against the clean and healthy image that Apple promote :D:p

Just sayin'.

This.

I bought a Nexus 7, and while it was definitely the best of the 6 Android devices I've owned (and sold) the no cellular data thing made it useless. Especially next to my LTE iPad.

of course its better to have on board 3g but it puts the price up a lot. You can still tether it to your phone so i dont see why its useless.

I can see them updating the iPad to 4G (for the rest of the world) when they release the Mini, which I'm sure will also not 4G & WiFi only models. But will this mean the next iPad will be closer to mid year and not early 2013? It actually makes more sense to have the iPad release in time for Christmas and not just after, pissing off 1000s of customer who just got a shinny new iPad for the holidays.

Personal I'd be interested in a 16Gb Mini with WiFi only, then tether it to my iPhone when out.

It's funny how people always say no 3G meant no GPS. The fact that it was the case for the previous generations of iPads does not make it an unbreakable rule.

I am not saying mini won't have 3G/4G, which I believe it will have.

Because most people do not understand how GPS really works...

Can see why someone who's just bought and iPad might be a bit peeved if a refreshed one is out next month. So if they do a minor refresh of the iPad now (assuming just more 4G freq and lightning connector) then where does that leave the usual annual refresh? Is such a change now so insignificant in the manufacturing process that we still get a new iPad in March?

In terms of the Mini, a little disappointed its not likely to be retina and probably wifi only. But guess thats to be expected if they are aiming for a price point around $199-$249. If it was retina and 4G/cellular then I would have been seriously tempted to get it as a replacemet for my iPad... but thats exactly what Apple probably don't want.

Where are you living? I have rarely been places where I don't have 3G service - and I'm from Cumbria.

I think most ppl understand how gps works its just in most cases for tablets the mapping is updated by data connection and all the maps are not stored on the device like on a stand alonegps unit so therefore so wifi only wouldnt include gps

Listen son, when I was young there was a saying: the computer you buy now will be twice as fast and half the price in a year.

This just means once you buy some piece of tech it will be replaced by something better soon. So get used to this son.

What exactly is "UK LTE"? What frequency (frequencies)?

Added LTE bands could be useful in other countries, too. For example Germany.

But Germany has LTE on 800, 1800 and 2600 MHz.
That means even the iPhone 5 LTE is very limited. It only supports
1800 MHz, so LTE can be used only on T-Mobile. But since T-Mo also uses 800 and 2600 MHz, only a fraction of the LTE infrastructure is open to the iPhone 5.

There are Android phones that support 800,1800 and 2600 in one device. So these can be used on all LTE networks.
