Additionally, the paper says the iPad mini will only support Wi-Fi.

But Apple, you're missing an opportunity to be the biggest mobile handset on the market!!! Please Tim, give us some blessed relief from all the Android trolls who won't let up about their brick-sized phones. We want to be able to say, 'That's not a phone… THIS is a phone!', as we pull our iPad mini out from our cargo pants!

I can't believe I wasted 20 minutes looking stuff up to refute this. That is a simple phone in survey. Highly un-reliable #1, and #2, it's US only. To bring it into perspective, globally it's much much higher using better methods than phone survey. Globally growing 6% to bring it to 68% while android appears to have leveled for this last quarter for whatever reason, I'm sure it'll change upcoming quarters. Also, please keep in mind, both way, the market is ever expanding so loss in market share is very deceiving. So lets take android stayed at 29.3%, does that mean it's not growing... heck no, it almost doubled it's "shipments" from same quarter last year. What is most amazing to me is the sign that of tablet web traffic, the iPad accounts for an astounding 94.64%. So either no one is using those other tablets or they just simply aren't consuming online media with them. Point being, iPad reigns in eyes of advertisers, developers, and media content producers.

Way to dump on everyone in the UK that just bought a new iPad, buying in to all of that "spectrum is fragmented, won't be available for a few years yet" jargon.

Thanks, Apple!

They will support uk lte with iPad 4th generation, don't worry, your iPad is fine

You mention you don't care about your phone being with you - that puts you in the smallest minority of people on the planet, you're an incredibly atypical user.

But in my post I also said, MiFi is a great option. Plus all your other WiFi devices can use the connection too.

You don't *need* a cellular connection in every single device - that's just succumbing to those big bad cellular company's (quite successful) plans to get you to hand over your wallet to them on a monthly basis. It's not a make or break decision for a media consumption device, especially when there are other ways to connect.

i for one dont mind the shared data plans, for $10 to add a tablet device, this makes it convenient, instead of getting a $50 plan. I say I dont mind not having my phone with me because 1, its just something else to carry around, but 2, most importantly, I just dont make a lot of phone calls, I txt more often than not, and truth be told, 90% of contacts use an iphone and I could imessage with them.....I would have never thought it but even in my business world life, most of my colleagues and those I do business with I can also interact this way with.....so really, im not in a minority when it comes to that.....carrying a mifi around would be no different than carrying a tethered iphone with....its "inconvenient" to turn personal hotspot on on the phone and connect, when I could just click the home button and go...

Would a Wi-Fi only iPad Mini be completely ridiculous? Yes, of course.

Would Apple actually release a Wi-Fi only iPad Mini? Yes, of course.

Apple is king when it comes to getting customers to buy products following their refresh cycle. Releasing a Wi-Fi version now and then later releasing a 3G/4G version later would follow Apple's business model.

So far, that business model has made a lot of profit, and has made many, many billions of dollars. But you are welcome to start your own company if you think you can do better.

I actually didn't indicate if it was a bad business model or not. My point was that the rumor correlates to Apple's business model and it's feasible it could happen.

I would like to see the iPad Mini have more connection capabilities than just Wi-Fi. I personally think it's ridiculous if it doesn't. Whether or not that affects them making "many billions of dollars" is possibly a different topic.

Unfortunately for those tablets, many of them feel laggier than iPad 1 let alone iPad 2. Even Nexus 7 which is by far the smoothest of them all doesn't feel as consistently smooth as iPad 2. Personally I'll hold out for the inevitable Retina version but a smaller cheaper iPad will be very compelling buy over all those tablets.

Opinions vary, but I think they are as smooth, especially with iOS6 as that really pushes the lil A4.

Why would you produce a purse sized device and not make it 3G/4G?

Good question. It'd be a good option.
However, we should only need one 4G device (+ hotspot)...
and it should be the one that's always in your pocket.
And it should be unlimited.

Thanks to Verizon ethics, I'll be stuck with my 4G Android--choking on its lack of RAM--till the day it dies (or until phones stop costing $700).

The Kindle Fire HD, Nexus 7, new Kobo Arc and Barnes and Noble 7" tablets are ALL more powerful then the iPad 1, plus they are all new, and the iPad 2 is still frigging expensive compared to those 7" tablets too.

When you say this you need to provide the benchmarks to prove it. I wouldn't be surprised to find it were true, but just claiming it without citation doesn't actually add anything to the conversation.

And use benchmarks, not specs. With different platforms, using comparisons such as processor speed or the amount of RAM is meaningless. The OS makes a difference, and the app framework makes a difference. In terms of responsiveness my old Froyo phone was miles behind my even older first-gen iPod Touch, even though the phone had a faster processor and more RAM for apps.

Price

How can people say that the iPad Mini will be priced at $199 or $249, when the new iPod Touch starts at $299? Would apple price a 32GB iPad Mini at the same price as an iPod Touch? My guess is $350 starting.

If it lacks a "retina" display, FaceTime camera, or 3G then the $249 price appears to be very reasonable. Somehow, I feel that Apple will market the iPad mini more specifically as a reader device rather than a typical iPad.

It's also not 7". I agree that they need to make a 4G/3G version.

eveyone knows i ment 7.85 inches. i couldn't be bothered typing it all out. i was layzing away in bed. The catagory is 7" tablet devices. It's all the same. don't need to get all technical on me like that. :D

If it lacks a retina display, then that means it's an inferior product to the competitors at launch.

I think it's wifi only this year so they can adjust the price for the ipod touch for next year, they need sometime to think how to price both of these so people can buy all of them.

Next year will probably bring a 4G iPad Mini with retina and a cheaper iPod touch.

I doubt Apple really cares. Even though they make a Macbook Pro model with a "retina" display, I am sure that they still sell plenty of "inferior" cheaper models that don't have it.

Anyway, everybody is just speculating. Nobody knows what this thing will have. However, it must lack something else other than the screen size in order for it be competitively priced.

16GB iPhone 5: $650
16GB New iPad LTE: $630

That's how.

Why the big issue for a 3G-LTE version - just use personal hotspot via iphone or is this just allowed on UK plans??

A few reasons may be
1) Doing so hurts the iPhones battery life.
2) The customers phone plan may not support tethering, or it costs extra
3) They may not actually have a smart phone (I'm sure there is some out there)
4) Perhaps their data allowance on their phone plan isn't suitable, and the telco arrangements are such that two plans works better for them. They may also want to use different providers completely.
5) It could be a work device and you want any use to be paid for by the company

I'm aware there are alternatives to much of the above such as wireless 3G modems etc, but it may not be ideal. Personally for pure convenience, I'd like to see a LTE model in the line up. I can't see there not being one to be honest.

Assuming there is room, why not follow the model of the larger iPad and charge a premium for 3G?

I would have zero interest in a non-3G 7" model. I know others would, but this is just my opinion.

This.

I bought a Nexus 7, and while it was definitely the best of the 6 Android devices I've owned (and sold) the no cellular data thing made it useless. Especially next to my LTE iPad.

When I bought the iPad in the uk, the apple store said it was compatible with uk 4g...or would be when 4g would be available in the uk.

A few days later, that all changed on the apple website.

I complained to apple, but they refused to refund the money.

Utter rip off.

That's a lie. Apple have no question asked 14 day opened box return policy. I had a scratch on mine and it was returned with no question asked.
