I understand your concept, but you're still locked to a contract, as the iPad+3G doesn't require one. I take it you're not a fan of the iPhone?

I think the iPhone is great, but:

1. I need more storage space
2. I'm not switching carriers for it
3. Can't see me using a phone without the option of a keyboard

Yeah, but you need to use Windows Mobile. Ew. That's worth $100 to avoid right there, plus you had to pay $25 for app, so it's really a wash.

Nope. The app is a one time charge. It really beats paying $15 or $30 per month.

I'm going to have to do same thing, mandatory all day meeting at work :( and wife won't be home most of the day.

I wouldn't have thought that Kenosha was the safest place to leave an expensive iPad sitting on your doorstep.

Now where exactly do you live? I'll look after if for you ;)

So is there any other purpose for this post other than to crap on people? Just curious.

These iPad threads sure are polarizing. Maybe it's anger from loyal Mac customers that feel Apple is dropping the ball with Macs and OS X for what they consider to be a toy. It seems like for most there is only room for love or hate for the iPad.

I love to hate the iPad, so see, there IS room for BOTH! :p

I've been using my WiFi model EVERYWHERE. I have an unlimited data plan with sprint + HTC Touch Pro 2 + Walkinghotspot.com app.

I'm golden. You guys can keep your 3G model that costs $130 extra plus $30/month for ATT's already over burdened network.

Ha, yeah, I'll pick up a $200 phone with a $99/mo unlimited plan plus a tethering plan (how much is that?) to avoid, er, $130 up front and $30/month unlimited.
You must be literally golden if you think that's a good deal.

You damn ipad 3G waiters better not be holding up my 17" i7 MBP that I'm waiting to see change status to shipped. Get to the back of the line! :D

Yet AT&T will be able to give you that answer Friday when we can sign up for 3G. I understand its different by state but why can't AT&T tell me what it may be for my state? They would be the ones to know. Since they have to have already gotten that figured out for their billing to be able to work in 2 days.

Thank you.

I understand each state is different but even when I am willing to tell them my zip code of my billing address they cannot give me answer. Apple tells me to ask AT&T and AT&T claims they do not sell the iPad.

I some found information online about the percentage but it is dated information that goes back to 2005. While I am hoping its hasn't gone up, I find that highly unlikely. I would be shocked if the taxes have not gone up. :p

Circa 2005, the tax in PA was about 19.05% which means the tax would be about 5.71. While this is not a big deal, I would like to know the true "out the door price" each month for the data plan. After spending 708.08, 814.08, or 920.08 (the price of an iPad 16, 32, or 64 (respectively) with the cost of the 39 dollar apple case and tax), I would like no surprises each month. I would not be too happy to find out that my iPad is really over 40 dollar a month due to various taxes and other regulatory fees. At one point I would start considering other option such as tethering to my phone that I already pay for a data plan on.

You all know you won't be getting it until Friday, so everyone needs to calm down and just relax until Friday when the 3G iPad will be sitting at your door step.

Actually, no I don't. Ok I do but when the Apple Store guys says something different, you want to be sure.

I been going to the Apple store to every once in a while to just kill the craving. I told the Apple guy I'm waiting for my 3G one to come Friday the 30th. He goes no that's the in store date. The online one is May the 7th. I said no that's only for people ordering them now. But know that damn doubts in my head. All Apple is says is ships late April but no delivered by then. But since it's most likely at the UPS LOUISVILLE, KY Facility I'm not worried to much.

Go to http://www.apple.com/hotnews/

It says - Apple announced that the Wi-Fi + 3G models of its magical iPad will be delivered to US customers who’ve pre-ordered on Friday, April 30.

See? No worries.

Nope. The app is a one time charge. It really beats paying $15 or $30 per month.

The extra $130 is also a one time charge. I was comparing it to that.

My point was that you are stuck using Windows Mobile, for how many years? I'd happily pay $100 up front to avoid that fate. And I think $30 one time cost for a 3G antenna is reasonable. So you if tally up the extra money I'd be willing to pay to avoid getting a Windows Mobile phone, there's the $130 right there!

Granted, my phone bill is $60 per month, and for most of the year, I plan to be on the $15 iPad plan (I'll ratchet it up on within a particular month if I need more). So my total "cellular" bill(s) for phone and ipad should be about $75. Not too bad, I think.

I would be concerned about the long term viability of the software you're using...it sounds like something a carrier might block. Hopefully not, though! I don't understand why they just don't introduce higher bandwidth plans...that would sure beat gimping devices.

I'm working this Friday and as I understand it, someone has to be home for the UPS Driver to give it too. It won't be left at the door. I'm hoping to write a note, sign it & post it to my door in the hopes the delivery driver will leave it for me.

I did the "Pre-Sign for the shipment" thing on the WiFi Version You have to sign it with a Note on the form Letting the Driver Know which neighbor or whatever to deliver it to and then THEY have to sign for it. They cant deliver it without having someone Physically Sign for it.. (Read: they wont Leave it on the Doorstep)

Thank you.

The AT&T service is a prepaid plan, not a postpaid plan. While I cannot guarantee it - because I am a nobody - I can state that my prepaid cell phone ($20 every 3 months)* has no taxes or fees associated with it.

It is quite likely you just prepay the service and that's it. Lots of telco fees and taxes should not apply anyways since it is not voice service.

*In case anyone was wondering, I make less than 5-10 min of phone calls a month, making the $6.66/mo the best deal I could find for a phone. Wireless Internet on the other hand, I will use heavily.

Sign into your apple store account... i can't remember exactly how this works, but you can print out an official release form that will allow them to leave it at your door.

Dear Everybody:

Please steal my iPad.

Love,
Me

It seems strange to me that they didn't do reserves for the 3G model.

The Apple Retail Stores should be fun on Friday evening.

Urgent question

What if I buy the 3G iPad and I want to use like another carrier's data plan i.e. T-Mobile or in another country like Rogers in Canada, is it possible or would I have to jailbreak it to get it up and running?

You just stick a microsim in it and it works (as long as it doesn't use a crazy frequency like T-Mobile in the US, where you can only use iPad on their 2G network).
