Which will be October next year for iPads.

New iPad is a big thing if you live in a country other than U.S. to be able to use LTE

Really wouldn't bank on that with the direction Apple is going know body thought the iPad 4 would be this so we can't really call when the next iPad will be for all we know apple still could launch another at spring

It's weird for the first time a lot of non tech followers that I have spoken to have no idea a new iPad or mini has come out. Normally even most of the folks I speak to know post announcement.

iPad 4 = what iPad 3 should have been

i'm looking forward to the A6X (i fell within the 30 day exchange period that apple was unofficially honoring)

good riddance to the A5X

This device cost over $600 with Applecare+ & tax just 5 months ago. Now you can buy it from apple's refurbished bin for $379.. that junk device bin is the only place on the apple site that you'll find any mention of ipad 3. That $379 price tag means that my device's resale value is now in the $200- $250 range if I'm lucky.

Why should any of us value this device when Apple, it's creator is clearly so embarrassed by it that it's dumping them at bargain basement prices?

??? I cannot see the logic in any of these points. First, if you include the cost of AppleCare+ and tax puts a the initial purchase of the device just five months ago. For my location, that puts it just under $655. Why not include both in the cost of a refurb unit? Yes, you can get AppleCare+ for refurbished iPads. That puts the costs (where I live) just slightly under $525. About a $130 difference vs the $220 you insinuate above.

Second, your iPad 3 (assuming it is still in very good condition) is worth more than $200-250. Major sites are buying them from people (sometimes a little more) for perhaps that amount. But you can sell it on eBay or Craigslist for more. If you doubt me, and you are in my area, I will definitely buy it from you for $200 (assuming it is in good condition). Almost certainly even for $250. If it is in good condition, I could easily turn it around and make money. I think $379 from the Apple store in refurbished condition is a good deal, but you still have to pay tax. And my little circle of friends has not had an iPad fail yet . . . I just cursed myself, I know. $200 vs over $400 (even if I only get seven months of warranty) is a great deal from where I sit.

Lastly, embarrassed? Dumping them at bargain basement prices? One could look at it that way. Maybe. Perhaps. Well, no, actually I do not really think you can. But whatever. Even more plausible, I would argue, is that they are doing exactly what CEO Tim Cook said they were doing in the announcement--not sitting on their hands this holiday season. Lots of parents buy iPads for back-to-school (little late for that, but still) and Christmas gifts. If they can add in a better cpu/gpu, the current connector (assuming I can get over having to buy new accessories/cables, if that is relevant to me) . . . and if they can sell it as the same price and make roughly the same margins . . . which is what he indicated on the conference call, and is apparently do this product's natural channel expansion capability over time . . . why not release it? Just stop and think for a moment. How many people do you think (really) would actually *not* buy an Apple product (assuming they were going to buy one in any event) because the release cycle is too short? Really. I cannot remember ever hearing this argument about an Apple product. Indeed, I usually here the opposite if anything. The third generation iPad is still a great tablet--in my opinion the second-best full size tablet on the market right now (after the fourth generation). That, that might only last for a week if Google really gits it right with the Nexus 10.

I was gonna get a new iPad in the spring because that's when I thought they'd usually come out, and I figured I could seriously use one for my education, ant that the iPad 3 was just an iPad 2 with a Retina display.

So naturally, when they announced the fourth-gen early, I pounced on it like a lion pouncing a zebra. It's my first iPad, and I'm super excited. :D

PS, does anyone have a more precise idea of when Cellular iPad models will deliver, other than "Mid November"?

My order status on the Apple website says mine delivers on 11/26. I ordered a black 16gb ATT.

I have seen some postings saying 11/23 but mostly 11/26.

In the same boat but with a loaded model. I think Apple is selling even new iPad 3rd Gens as refurb to move them, instead of marking them down and leaving them on the regular site. Regardless, with so much stock left of the 3rd Gens being marked down it is impossible to sell a used one at a reasonable price. So much for trying to sell before the new one is released as there was really no way to anticipate this early release...

As above, you're just plain wrong. Gazelle will give you $250 cash. Amazon will give you between $320-365 store credit. You could easily sell it on Craigslist for $325 or more. Most of the world isn't aware of the refurb store. The release of the new model has devalued it by something like $25-50 max. You sound like a spoiled child.

On the other hand, with this update, Apple has finally gotten me to update my iPad 1. I nearly did it with the 3rd gen, but despite really wanting the screen, the performance wasn't where I wanted it. With the new A6x, it should be.

Well it kinda makes sense because less people want to upgrade.

iPad 2 - Lighter, thinner, faster + cameras

iPad 3 - Retina display + LTE

iPad 4 - ....

I also suspect that the iPad mini is stealing much of the "new" iPad's thunder.

iPad 4 - A6X, Facetime HD, Lightening, better LTE

Is it enough to upgrade from iPad 3 - that's a personal financial question. Is it enough for those who haven't been on a yearly upgrade and still have an iPad 1 or 2 - probably.

Well I am excited. iPad 3 was laggy and glitchy. Plus on wifi next to my iphone 5 was slow. So I sold my 3 and excited for my 4.

Friday cannot come soon enough for me!!

I noticed some websites like The Vege would load pretty slow regardless of how fast the wifi was

I'm not a "spoiled child" I have my iPad 3 on Craig's list, the top offer I've gotten so far is for $250 but only if I include my leather case, several have responded offering amounts as low as $200 "cash money" these potential buyers mention that they know thy can buy a refurb from Apple for $379.. One low baller even threatened to flag my listing. Besides, even if I was paid $300 for this embarrassing device that doesn't exist anymore I'll still have to fork over another few hundred to replace it with the "new iPad" won't I?

Apple will always add faster processors and better cameras.

When you look at it from that point of view only the Lightening dock is truly "new". Like an all new design and cameras in the iPad 2 and the Retina display and LTE introduction in the iPad 3.

You missed my point...I was trying to compare which generation has more new features, I was showing how some people MIGHT interpret this new 4th update generally.

Thanks for clarifying your point.
What I was trying to demonstrate is that while there may be some ambiguity in classifying this 4th update as a true 4th update or not, I felt that looking at the entire list of changes would help establish the iPad 4 as a "true" upgrade vs a "S" upgrade a-la iPhone.

I think what has caught people off guard is how quickly it occurred. It felt rushed, with a purpose of product connector consolidation only - with a slap on processor and HD Facetime cam. If this update was delayed until March - but identical - I believe the sentiment would be different.

If it's embarrassing today, it was embarrassing the day you purchased it. It works no differently today than it did last week or when you bought it.

At $365 from Amazon you could have the new one that you are so jealous of for $135 plus tax (or with no tax in many states). Trading in your iPad rarely costs you less than $100, often more, so as I said, this update isn't 'costing' you more than about $25 in perceived value.

The 4S phone was a small update but things like Siri made it good, the camera was amazing.

Ipad 4 just brings minor updates. 720p Facetime is not really anything amazing nor is it being twice as fast (as the Ipad 2/3) are already very fast.

I think Ipad 4 is a very bland and dull update.

Sorry but we pay taxes here on our internet purchases as our state tax forms specifically ask us what we spent on the web & we aren't going to lie. Selling my now discontinued, obsolete ipad 3 to amazon for $365 will leave me having to dig into my wallet for another $300 to purchase an ipad 4.

My device is a discontinued product, historically how well does Apple do in terms of supporting & updating discontinued products? ipad 3 owners are basically in the same boat as those folks who own an ipad 1 at this point, the difference being that ipad 3 purchasers were thrown into the boat at the 7 month mark.

Technology moves forward at a blinding pace, this is very true
Is it Apple's right to dump the ipad 3 at fire sale prices & remove all other mention of it from their website as if the device never existed? Yes, yes, yes it is! Cupertino can & does whatever the hell they want, Consumers though also have rights & that includes the right to express their displeasure with this move.

$135 plus tax of 8% on a $500 purchase is $175 out of pocket, not $300. Your existing case will still work.

I would expect at least 1.5 more years of updates for the iPad 3, which will make it the same as what the iPad 1 got.

I don't post much, but I'm excited! I'll be upgrading from an iPad 1, which crashes a lot due to lack of RAM, and is slooow.

Excuse me, I need to buy the new $499 ipad, I will also need to purchase another Applecare + policy which I had on my ipad 3 so I am looking at a cost of close to $300 to upgrade.

ipad 3 is a discontinued product just like the ipad 1, I think assuming that we'll get anything in the way of software updates is foolish, assuming we'll get another 1.5 years of software updates is a pipe dream. They'll probably issue one limited update like they did with ios 6 on the ipad 2, then discontinue updates altogether.

The stage has already been set, Apple very clearly wants to get rid of this device as quickly as possible, to remove all mention of it from their website as if it never existed. They'll stop supporting ipad 3 with blinding speed in order to force gun shy ipad 3 owners into upgrading.

Yes, I'm excited because of that, getting LTE, but also because iPad is what I use most, and all the improvements in the 4 are significant for me, and I'm glad the size/form hasn't changed as it will fit my hoverbars and other accessories.

AppleCare is transferable so if you are a savvy seller you can recoup some of that cost. AppleCare, like all add-on warranties is really an insurance plan and is far from necessary. If we'd bought AppleCare for every iPhone and iPad we've owned, we would have spent over $600 and gotten nothing in return. It's bad value on products like these. All the more so if you expect to upgrade at every opportunity. You had to know there would be a new iPad available within the first year of owning yours, so if you were planning on upgrading why on earth would you pay for an extended warranty? If you weren't, why are you complaining about diminished value of something you have no intention of selling? If you aren't selling it has exactly the same value to you today that it did last week.

I take my device to work every day to use with clients in a setting where the ipad being dropped & broken is always a distinct possibility, insurance is necessary.

I have my ipad with Applecare + on craig's list so far the top offer has been $250 but only if I also throw in my leather case, so that's what being a "savvy seller" will get me.

And yes, I knew a new ipad would be coming, probably in March, not Oct, a big difference, I'm in the exact same position as an ipad 1 owner, my device has been discontinued. Enjoy your ipad 4, I hope Apple updates again in march and discontinues it.

Looking forward to getting mine (prepering for shipping). We have an iPad 2, and its slow compared to the iPhone 5. With the new iPad I'll have the screen size I need with the speed of my iPhone!

Gadgets <> Appreciable Investment Vehicle

Not my main point, but that $379 becomes $508 with Applecare+ and tax. That's a more "apples to apples" (pun intended) price comparision to your $600 cost.

Now, I'll be dating myself here, but in 1990 I paid nearly $7,000 (in 1990 dollars) for a 386-based computer. A year later, I would have been lucky to get $1,000 for it. Computing Tech depreciates. Fast.

I pretty much consider any money I spend on high-tech gadgets as "gone, never to be seen again." I don't even think in terms of "resale value". I use them until they no longer serve my purpose, then I pass them on to a relative or friend when I buy something newer. For now, I will be sticking with my iPad3 because it performs just like it did before the iPad4 was announced, and I don't need the extra speed, better facetime camera, or lightning connector.

If you're looking for an investment that holds value, consider gold or real estate. But neither of those are available with a retina display or app store. :)

My devices accompany me to job sites at literally every corner of the earth, so I know well the risks. I still consider AppleCare to be a poor value; self-insuring is much cheaper.

Still, your iPad has a one year warranty standard. If you intended to upgrade within that window, why buy a warranty to extend that? If you don't, why do you care that a device was upgraded at 7 months rather than 11?
