I sold mine on craigslist and bought a new one on the Apple store. All in all, sets me back $140. (Bought the ipad on craigslist for $460)
The apple care that I never bought would have costed me $112 ($99 + BC taxes...) so for $30 more I gained an upgraded ipad, a new condition ipad (new batteries) + the 1 year extra warranty.
I won't ever buy Apple care now and will just keep doing this.

just not as big a new thing, lots still have iPad 3.

Were it not for the fact that I was offered a good price for my 3, I wouldn't be upgrading...I'm doing it based on the sell at the top, so it's not costing me much. All we are really getting is a speed hike. The 3 does all that the 4 will do, just a little slower. A6 cpu, and faster graphics, and the lightning port. I guess that's about it...HD FT camera, not something that would have really made me jump..It was just about the cost.

Personally, I'm excited. I also don't understand the argument that it is not a major update.

I can remember a time when I used to replace my whole motherboard, ram and processor for 33MHz increments of processor speeds. (That was the Pentium II kids...)

I'm pretty excited! If only because I love new shiny tech-gadgets in brand new boxes!
Also, as the die was cast so I could upgrade pretty much free of charge, I'm kind of curious to see if the stuttering I experience in some of my apps will disappear or not. I think yes!

This device cost over $600 with Applecare+ & tax just 5 months ago. Now you can buy it from apple's refurbished bin for $379.. that junk device bin is the only place on the apple site that you'll find any mention of ipad 3. That $379 price tag means that my device's resale value is now in the $200- $250 range if I'm lucky.

Why should any of us value this device when Apple, it's creator is clearly so embarrassed by it that they've removed any mention of it from their website like it never existed & is dumping it's remaining stock at bargain basement prices?

Your device still works as advertised right?

Ok then.

Ya, they kind've just made it an "iPad 3S"-ish. Still a good deal for those who are in the market for one.

I wonder if in the near future they would have the black as Black w/ an anodized rear panel configuration. I like the look.

I think you're exaggerating quite a bit. No way is it worth that little. I'm thinking 300 minimum. I JUST sold my iPad 1, 16GB wifi for $240 and I had multiple interested parties. Just because a new product comes out, doesn't mean yours is now junk.

My iPad has been on Craig's list for several days now $25O is the top offer I have received for it, all prospective buyers point out the $379 price in the Apple refurb store.

That SUCKS! I got $330 on Amazon last week for a refurbished iPad 2 that I purchased back in December.

Prospective buyers have been really aggressive as well telling me I better take the money & run as the price will fall even lower in the next couple of weeks as people start receiving their mini's and iPad 4's

where will we be able to buy the ipad 4 online besides Apple Store?
Can't find anyone with it on their site yet!

I think other retailers generally start offering them just after orders arrive from pre-orders, which also corresponds to the date Apple B&Ms have them. So probably Fri or Saturday, then I'd assume, all the usual suspects: MacMall, MacWarehouse, Best Buy, MicroCenter, etc.

So tell them to **** off? That's what I don't get with people selling things online. They want to buy something YOU have. They want the product. But because most sellers are spineless, they try to strong arm you into giving them some ridiculous price.

If you don't like their offer, tell them to get bent. Plain and simple. You're not the hostage of some buyer, just like you aren't the hostage of Apple. You don't have to sell it, and you can inform them of that.

You don't have to let people hustle you. Refurbs could be damaged, advertise the original price, and either ignore or blast the lowballers. Plain and simple.

wifi on the ipad 3 seemed to go half the speed of wifi on my iphone 5, i can't wait to get the ipad 4 for that reason alone

Well 3rd Gen iPads are fetching $350-$380 on Amazon, so maybe you want to try that?

Sorry but we pay taxes here on our internet purchases as our state tax forms specifically ask us what we spent on the web & we aren't going to lie. Selling my now discontinued, obsolete ipad 3 to amazon for $365 will leave me having to dig into my wallet for another $300 to purchase an ipad 4.

My device is a discontinued product, historically how well does Apple do in terms of supporting & updating discontinued products? ipad 3 owners are basically in the same boat as those folks who own an ipad 1 at this point, the difference being that ipad 3 purchasers were thrown into the boat at the 7 month mark.

Technology moves forward at a blinding pace, this is very true
Is it Apple's right to dump the ipad 3 at fire sale prices & remove all other mention of it from their website as if the device never existed? Yes, yes, yes it is! Cupertino can & does whatever the hell they want, Consumers though also have rights & that includes the right to express their displeasure with this move.

I don't understand this line of reasoning. You still haven't explained in what ways the iPad 3 is "obsolete," or why you feel you need to buy an iPad 4. Had Apple stuck to the past upgrade cycle, you would have been in the same situation five months from now, which feels like the blink of an eye once you get to my age. Here's a thought: why not hold onto your iPad 3 until it no longer does what you bought it for? As others have pointed out elsewhere, tech gadgets aren't appreciating investments (at least, not until they become old enough and scarce enough that collectors want them). And since the brand-new iPad Mini has the same guts as the iPad 2, I imagine that Apple will support the iPad 3 at least as long as they support those two devices.

I happily bought an iPad 1 at AT&T's "fire sale prices" from their "junk bin" a week after the iPad 2 came out, and I couldn't find an iPad 2 in stock anywhere. I paid $529 for a 64 GB 3G model that had cost $829 the day before. I was thrilled. It wasn't obsolete. The extra features of the iPad 2 weren't worth an extra $300 to me. As time went on, I still didn't feel compelled to upgrade to the iPad 2. The iPad 3 was tempting, but my iPad 1 was still serviceable. Now it's slow and crashes a lot, so I'm ready to upgrade. I'm leaning toward the iPad 4, but if AT&T blows out the iPad 3 next week, I might go for that. If it were truly obsolete (i.e., useless), I wouldn't even consider it.

Geekbabe what in the world makes you think your ipad 3 is obsolete? Your ipad 3 should last you at least two years. Honestly i think your ipad 3 will out last the ipad mini on ios updates. No one is putting a gun to your head forcing you to sell your ipad 3 to get an ipad 4. If you can eat the loss and really want an ipad 4 go for it but in no world is the ipad 3 obsolete

Actually it's all good, I've decided to donate my ipad 3 to a worthy charity that will get a lot of use from it.

That is incredibly awesome of you +1 (I'd give you a +100 if I could :) )

The "awesome" part of this is the benefit to me, I am very priveledged to have a lot of great hardware pass through my hands, regaining perspective is a great gift :)

I will look at both the 4 & the mini, I want a LTE model this time & will decide which ipad meets my needs best after a hands on session.

Have an LTE model on order but still not sure if I'll go through with it. Depends what I get for my 3. But won't be disappointed if I cancel; won't be excited if I get it. For me, it's not a huge upgrade from 3 - nothing I can't live w/o.
