Apple offered SIM Free for the Xs and Xs Max last year on release its what I got. They didn't for a bit on the Xr though. If your getting an 11 Pro it will likely be available day 1. You will be able to see this tomorrow after the keynote when the site updates what the options will be.
That's the best part of the pre-approval process. You have a pretty good idea of which phone you are going to get. If there's a sim-free unlocked version, you'll know after tomorrow.

What are we expecting for trade in value one a Xs Max? I see the X is up to $450 right now so maybe $600?

I'm putting it on my Apple Card so I don't have to pay right away so if they give around $600 ill do the trade in to avoid hassle on eBay. If it's less its going on eBay for $850 with cases and another year of Apple Care.

That's a good point. I'm deciding between the 11 Pro Max or the 11 Pro with additional storage
Max for me. I spent extra on the X 2 years ago getting 256GB because its all that was in stock. Didn't even use 64 of it. Have 40GB free on my XS Max right now.
[doublepost=1568072283][/doublepost]One thing to add to the original post is that Apple is also streaming the keynote on YouTube this year.

How would you go about trading in your phone and putting that towards the preorder?

When you order you say that you have a device to trade in. You still pay the full amount upfront but once your trade in is received that amount is refunded back to the payment method used.

Are you using IUP?

When you set up to buy, you say you have a phone to trade in. I think the same thing happens when you buy outright.
No IUP. I buy outright.

And I can do this if I buy outright? How long does this process take when checking out?

Yes, I believe you can. We'll find out for sure tomorrow.

I'll be honest, though: You're taking a hit on phone value for convenience sake.

You can when buying outright yes. Maybe a couple seconds? Go act like your ordering a XS right now and you can see what the process is like. It may ask for the Serial number or IMEI. Sometimes this can be selected from your account if the device is on there. I tried with the XS just now and it only asked for model and if it was in good condition.
[doublepost=1568073605][/doublepost]With trade in according to Apple. If you buy outright the trade it amount will be credited back to the payment method. If using iPhone Upgrade Program it will be applied as a credit therefor reducing the monthly payments.

What I'm going to do is choose trade in at checkout since it can only be done during the purchasing of a device and ill see what I can get on eBay as well. If it sells on eBay for what I want ill go that route if not I have 14 days to send it via trade in to do that.

I’m okay with that. I’m tired of dealing with scammers/shady people on Craigslist.
Exactly why I’m doing it. I’d rather have pretty much a guarantee of getting that amount credited to me. Rather than buy it and get screwed on eBay. Since I sell my current device to offset the cost of the new one that’s a big deal.

I used to sell on eBay as well, but stopped doing so because someone tried claiming they never received the iPhone. eBay sided with me *shocking because from what I’ve been told eBay always sides with the buyer*

This is very helpful. I just did this, and it seems very easy/seamless. Do you know if I can drop the phone off at an Apple store, or do I have to ship it?

They mail you a box and a label and you ship it. You can trade in iPhones in store but only during an in store purchase. So if you pre order online you have to ship it. That’s the same even if you do pickup for the new iPhone because that’s still an online order.

You might have already answered this, but are there separate lines for pre-orders and walk ins? The last launch day store purchase I made was the 5S.
This totally depends on the Apple store, but at my location, they do have a separate lines for those who reserved online and there is a line for walk ins. Actually I believe what they did last year was even for walk-in's if they opted to choose the 2pm to 2:30 pm line, once they are in their queue, they will just place them in that line. So eventually just 1 line.

Just wanted to say thanks for the info. Great thread!

I’ll be pre-ordering for in-store pickup for the first time. UPS is shipping later and later to my house (they used to arrive around 2PM, last year I got my XS Max at 7PM). I’ll probably take the morning off and scoop it up so I have it for the whole day.

Unlocked versions of the XS/Max were available for pre order. Those days are over (hopefully forever).
I typically pre-order 1 on iUP and additional 4-5 more for delivery. But every one of them I always request a hold for pick up at UPS CC. This way I can just pick it up at the UPS CC in my town and not have to worry about when the UPS driver will be coming. Plus I don't have to waste time following where my UPS driver is at. My UPS CC opens from 10 to 12:30 pm and then 4 pm to 6 pm and I work from 8 to 3 on Fridays. This definitely beats the following the UPS driver and to keep tracking when it will arrive.

I hope that Sim-Free model will be available at pre-order, just like last year with the XS and XS Max as well.
